💘 When Harry Met Sally: Exploring Friendship and Love in a Timeless Classic
When Harry Met Sally... is a 1989 American romantic comedy-drama directed by Rob Reiner, with a screenplay by Nora Ephron. Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, the film follows Harry and Sally from their initial meeting in Chicago to various encounters over twelve years in New York City, exploring the question: "Can men and women ever just be friends?"
The concept for the film emerged from Reiner's experiences following his divorce from Penny Marshall, and an interview Ephron conducted with Reiner inspired the character of Harry. Sally, on the other hand, was modeled after Ephron and her friends. Billy Crystal joined the project, contributing to the screenplay, which was structured by Ephron and based on the real-life friendship between Reiner and Crystal. The soundtrack features standards performed by Harry Connick Jr., whose work earned him his first Grammy Award for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance.
Columbia Pictures released the film selectively, relying on word of mouth before expanding distribution. It grossed $92.8 million in North America and was met with critical acclaim. Ephron's screenplay garnered a British Academy Film Award, an Oscar nomination, and a Writers Guild of America Award nomination. The film ranks 23rd on the AFI's list of top American comedy films and 60th on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies". In 2004, it was adapted for the stage, and in 2022, it was preserved in the United States National Film Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
Plot Summary
In 1977, Harry Burns and Sally Albright graduate from the University of Chicago and carpool to New York City. During the trip, they debate whether men and women can be friends, a notion Sally dismisses but Harry insists is impossible because of physical attraction. They part ways, expecting never to meet again.
Five years later, they encounter each other on a flight. Sally is dating Harry's neighbor Joe, while Harry is engaged to Helen. They briefly consider friendship but conclude it won't work. Another five years pass, and they run into each other at a bookstore. Now both single, they decide to become friends, spending time together and discussing their past relationships.
As their friendship deepens, Harry and Sally experience a growing attraction, culminating in a kiss at a New Year's Eve party. They attempt to set each other up with their best friends, Marie and Jess, who instead fall for each other and get engaged. After Sally learns her ex is getting married, she and Harry have a vulnerable moment that leads to sex, complicating their friendship. A fallout ensues, but Harry tries to reconcile.
On New Year's Eve, Harry realizes he loves Sally and races to confess his feelings. Despite her initial skepticism, his heartfelt declaration convinces her, and they marry three months later, twelve years after their first meeting. The film intersperses segments of older couples sharing how they met, ending with Harry and Sally's own story.
