🏈 Ohio's Mr. Football: Celebrating Mentor's Bart Tanski and Mitch Trubisky
The Ohio Mr. Football Award, presented annually by the Associated Press, is the most prestigious individual honor in Ohio high school football. Established in 1987, this accolade recognizes the state's top player for their exceptional performance, leadership, and impact on the field during a particular season. Over the years, it has become a symbol of excellence in high school athletics, highlighting Ohio’s rich tradition of producing elite football talent. Winners of the Mr. Football Award often go on to have successful collegiate careers, with some making their mark in the NFL.
Mentor High School, located in northeast Ohio, is one of the schools that has produced two Mr. Football winners: Bart James Tanski in 2007 and Mitch Trubisky in 2012. Both athletes left an indelible mark on their high school careers, not only earning individual accolades but also elevating their team to new heights during their time on the field.
Bart James Tanski was Mentor High School’s first ever Mr. Football recipient. Bart who claimed the title in 2007, was a standout quarterback known for his leadership and ability to perform under pressure. That season, Tanski led Mentor to a state championship appearance (which he had also done in 2006), dazzling spectators with his composure and skill.
Five years later, in 2012, Mitch Trubisky followed in Tanski’s footsteps, becoming Mentor High School’s second Mr. Football winner. Trubisky’s arm strength, football IQ, and mobility as a quarterback made him one of the most electrifying players in the state. Under his guidance, Mentor's football program thrived, and his achievements didn’t stop in high school. After a stellar collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, Trubisky was selected second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, marking the beginning of his professional football journey.
Mentor High School's success in producing two Mr. Football winners showcases the strength of its football program and its ability to foster top-tier talent. The legacies of Tanski and Trubisky continue to inspire the next generation of athletes in Ohio.
