🕊️ Commemorating the End of World War II and the Heroes Who Secured Peace
On May 8, 1945, World War II in Europe concluded with Germany’s surrender, sparking celebrations around the globe. People poured into the streets, clutching newspapers that declared Victory in Europe (V-E Day). Just months later, U.S. President Harry S. Truman announced Japan’s surrender, officially marking the end of World War II. This momentous occasion, known as Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day), was solidified when formal surrender documents were signed aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
V-J Day brought both relief and reflection. While the war was finally over, it was a bittersweet moment for many Americans who had lost loved ones in the conflict. Over 400,000 American servicemen had given their lives in the struggle for freedom. Amid the joy of victory, there was a deep sense of gratitude and remembrance for those who would never return home.
Seventy-six years later, The National WWII Museum continues to honor this legacy by commemorating both V-E and V-J Days. The museum also recognizes the countless servicemembers and Home Front workers who contributed to the preservation of freedom and democracy.
