📰 Army Specialist from Perry, Ohio, Killed at Fort Drum; Charges Filed

A tragic incident occurred at Fort Drum on August 5th, where 21-year-old Specialist Jacob Ashton from Perry, Lake County, was found dead on the military base. The U.S. Army's Fort Drum Public Affairs confirmed that his death is being treated as a homicide.

Authorities have identified and charged a suspect, an army specialist from Kodiak, Alaska, with premeditated murder and obstruction of justice. However, the military has not disclosed further details about the suspect or the nature of their relationship with Ashton, if any.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the death.

This marks the second loss of a service member from Lake County within the past year. Last October, Lance Corporal Austin Schwenk tragically died in an incident at his base in North Carolina.

💥 Three Hospitalized After Collision at Mentor Gas Station

Three individuals were hospitalized following a collision between a car and an SUV at a GetGo gas station in Mentor on August 7. The incident occurred at 2:01 p.m. at 6800 Center St., prompting emergency responses from Fire Stations 4 and 5.

Upon arrival, first responders found a vehicle lodged beneath an SUV. The collision happened when the car driver unexpectedly accelerated while maneuvering around the fuel pumps, causing the vehicle to under-ride the SUV.

The SUV's driver, who was refueling a portable gas tank, was thrown from his vehicle upon impact, suffering a head injury. He was transported to Hillcrest Hospital for treatment.

The car's driver, although not suffering from traumatic injuries, was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mentor Hospital for other medical issues.

Additionally, a third vehicle was indirectly involved when it was pushed into a fuel pump column, snapping the nozzle and injuring the arm of the motorist fueling the vehicle. She was also taken to the Mentor hospital for care.

🚶‍♀️Your Guide to Starting and Sticking with a Fitness Routine

Starting a new exercise routine can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re unsure where to begin or how to maintain the habit. But regular physical activity is essential for both your physical and mental well-being. Here’s a simple guide to help you start exercising and, more importantly, stick to it.

1. Set Realistic Goals

The first step is to set achievable goals. It’s easy to get carried away with enthusiasm, but setting the bar too high can lead to frustration and burnout. Start with small, attainable targets. For example, if you’re new to exercise, begin with a 15-minute walk three times a week. As you build your stamina, gradually increase the time and intensity of your workouts.

2. Choose Activities You Enjoy

Exercise shouldn’t feel like a chore. Find activities that you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s swimming, cycling, dancing, or simply walking in nature. When you like what you’re doing, you’re more likely to stick with it. Try out different forms of exercise until you find what makes you happy.

3. Schedule Your Workouts

Treat your exercise sessions as important appointments. Schedule them into your day just like you would any other commitment. Consistency is key, so try to work out at the same time each day. This routine helps turn exercise into a habit, making it easier to stick with over the long term.

4. Start Slowly and Build Up Gradually

One of the biggest mistakes people make when starting a new exercise routine is doing too much too soon. This can lead to injury or extreme soreness, which might discourage you from continuing. Start slow and allow your body to adjust to the new demands. Gradually increase the duration and intensity as you get stronger.

5. Stay Accountable

Accountability can be a powerful motivator. Find a workout buddy or join a fitness class to keep yourself on track. Sharing your goals with friends or family can also help, as they can offer encouragement and support.

6. Listen to Your Body

While it’s important to push yourself, it’s equally important to listen to your body. Pay attention to signs of fatigue, pain, or discomfort. Rest and recovery are crucial components of any fitness routine. Overtraining can lead to injury and burnout, so balance hard work with rest.

7. Celebrate Your Progress

Finally, take time to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Whether it’s completing your first week of workouts or reaching a new milestone, acknowledging your progress keeps you motivated and reinforces your commitment.

Conclusion

Starting and sticking to an exercise routine doesn’t have to be daunting. By setting realistic goals, choosing enjoyable activities, and staying consistent, you can build a sustainable fitness habit that enhances your health and well-being. Remember, the journey to fitness is a marathon, not a sprint, so take it one step at a time and enjoy the process.

Noel's Late Homer Lifts Guardians Over Cubs

Jhonkensy Noel's solo home run in the sixth inning off Drew Smyly proved to be the decisive moment for the Cleveland Guardians in their 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. This win marks the Guardians' fourth consecutive victory, solidifying their position as the top team in baseball with a 71-49 record.

Noel’s 430-foot blast into the left field stands was his ninth home run in just 32 games since debuting in the major leagues on June 26. This homer followed his impressive two-homer performance in Monday’s 9-8 series opener win.

The Guardians, who boast the best home record in the majors at 37-20, had solid pitching support as well. Pedro Avila secured the win after retiring two batters, while Emmanuel Clase closed out the game for his 37th save, tying him for the major league lead.

Matthew Boyd, making his first MLB start since June 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, pitched effectively for Cleveland. Over 5 1/3 innings, Boyd allowed one run, gave up three hits, and struck out six, showcasing a strong return to the mound.

For the Cubs, Drew Smyly allowed one run over 1 1/3 innings in the loss, while their early lead came from a sacrifice fly by Dansby Swanson in the second inning. Cleveland tied the game in the bottom half when Brayan Rocchio’s bunt single brought Andrés Giménez home, with a fielding error by Cubs pitcher Javier Assad contributing to the run.

In the final game of the series, Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon is set to face Guardians right-hander Alex Cobb.
