👮 Mentor Swears In Ten New Officers

Mentor Police Department

On August 9, the Mentor Police Department welcomed ten new probationary officers during a ceremony held at the Mentor Civic Amphitheater. The new officers—Megan Carney, Gavin McLean, Braeden Gefert, Joshua Kernc, Brent Adzema, Bridget Mullholand, Jacob Schmitt, Samuel Bellissimo, Logan Schaefer, and Quinton Bailey—were sworn in by Mentor Municipal Judge John Trebets.

The ceremony was attended by the officers' families, friends, and several members of the Mentor city council, administration, and safety forces. The city of Mentor expressed pride in being able to attract these new recruits, especially given the challenges that law enforcement agencies across the country are facing in filling positions.

🏘️ Gen Z Leads Optimistic Wave in Tough Home-Buying Landscape

House hunters today face significant hurdles, with affordability issues and limited inventory making the home-buying process more challenging than ever. Yet, a sense of cautious optimism prevails among many borrowers.

This optimism, however, varies across generations. While 84% of Gen Z respondents are confident in their ability to buy a home, the sentiment drops to 68% among millennials, 66% for Gen X, and just 59% for baby boomers. The optimism among younger buyers is notable, given the challenging environment marked by rising living costs and escalating property values.

Despite their optimism, many borrowers are adjusting their expectations and budgets. With rising home prices, high mortgage rates, and limited options within their price range, 73% of respondents have increased their house-hunting budgets. Moreover, the rising costs of homeownership—such as utilities, insurance, taxes, and repairs—have further strained savings and budgeting for 70% of those surveyed.

The home-buying process remains stressful, with 71% of respondents describing it as such. The stress levels are particularly high among younger generations, with 82% of Gen Z and 78% of millennials finding the process overwhelming, compared to 71% of Gen X and 60% of baby boomers.

Financial literacy also plays a crucial role in navigating the housing market. The survey revealed that 43% of borrowers sought education and guidance during the mortgage process, with specific difficulties ranging from selecting the right mortgage to understanding affordability and loan programs. Many home buyers, especially younger ones, are becoming more aware that the traditional 20% down payment is not always necessary. The median U.S. home buyer now puts down 13%, with significant percentages of Gen Z and millennial buyers putting down less than 20%.

Guardians Surge in Sixth Inning to Defeat Twins 5-3, Expand Division Lead

The Cleveland Guardians secured a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, splitting the four-game series between the top two teams in the AL Central. This win marked the Guardians' second consecutive victory after a seven-game losing streak, extending their lead over Minnesota to 3.5 games, with Kansas City trailing by four.

David Fry and José Ramírez both hit home runs, with Fry's crucial 405-foot shot in the sixth inning breaking open the game. Cleveland's offense came alive in the sixth, scoring four runs—something they hadn't done in the past six games. Brayan Rocchio and Steven Kwan added RBIs with key singles, while Will Brennan's double extended the lead to 5-1.

Tanner Bibee, making his first start in 13 days due to right shoulder soreness, pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and striking out five. Cleveland has an impressive 18-5 record in games Bibee starts. Despite a shaky ninth inning, Emmanuel Clase secured his 35th save, narrowly escaping a bases-loaded situation.

For Minnesota, Byron Buxton's two home runs, including a solo shot in the second inning and a two-run blast in the eighth, weren't enough to overcome Cleveland's lead. David Festa, in his sixth career start, allowed one earned run and three hits over 3 1/3 innings before being pulled after 70 pitches.

The Guardians will next face the Chicago Cubs at home, with RHP Ben Lively set to start against Cubs LHP Shota Imanaga.

🏈 Cleveland Browns' Backup Woes Exposed in Preseason Loss to Packers

The Cleveland Browns opened their season with a disappointing 23-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers at home on Saturday night. The Packers, playing most of their starters including quarterback Jordan Love, dominated from the start. Love quickly connected with receiver Dontayvion Wicks for a 65-yard touchdown after a breakdown in the Browns' defense, which was compounded by an injury to safety Ronnie Hickman.

The Browns, resting several key players, including quarterback Deshaun Watson, struggled offensively under Jameis Winston, who led the team to a field goal in his brief outing.

As the game progressed, the Browns' backups faltered, with the offensive line failing to protect the quarterbacks or create running lanes. Tyler Huntley and Dorian Thompson-Robinson took turns under center, with the latter showing promise despite the challenging circumstances. Thompson-Robinson completed 14 of 18 passes for 134 yards and nearly led a scoring drive, only to have a touchdown pass negated by a penalty.

Rookie receivers Jamari Thrash and Ahmarean Brown made notable contributions, while the Browns' defense, though aggressive, failed to contain the Packers' offense. Linebackers Devin Bush and Mouhamed Diabate stood out with solid plays.

TRADE: The Cleveland Browns have reacquired center Nick Harris from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade involving future draft picks. Harris, who was originally drafted by Cleveland, returns to the team.
