💡 Statement from The Illuminating Company
(Wednesday Aug 7) The damage across greater Cleveland after last night’s storm is significant and widespread, consisting of hundreds of broken poles and crossarms, downed power lines and fallen trees and debris blocking road access. Approximately 348,500 customers in northeast Ohio lost power due to the storm, and 305,000 customers remain without service, primarily in the hardest-hit areas of Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula counties. Our crews continue to work around the clock and we’re shifting crews from our sister companies that were less impacted by Tuesday’s storm. Our primary focus is to remove hazards and assess damage so that our crews can access the site of an outage to safely make repairs. While we are still developing estimated restoration times, we expect this will be a multi-day restoration effort for many. We will provide restoration updates for specific locations as they become available on our outage map: http://spr.ly/OHOutageMap. You can also text STAT to 544487 for an update for your specific outage after you’ve reported it. We appreciate your patience and understanding while our crews work as quickly and safely as possible to get all customers back up and running. Stay safe!
⛈ Severe Weather Aftermath: Northeast Ohio Recovers from Tuesday's Storms
Northeast Ohio is recovering from dangerous weather that struck on Tuesday, leaving widespread damage and power outages across the region.
As of Wednesday afternoon, FirstEnergy reported about 330,000 customers still without power, with 90% of outages affecting Illuminating Company customers. Crews are working around the clock to restore electricity, but officials warn it may be a multi-day effort for many areas.
The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado in the Valley View/Bedford area, with survey teams assessing damage throughout the region.
Significant damage has been reported in several communities:
- Lakewood: Downed trees and damaged buildings, including a destroyed chimney at an apartment complex
- Cleveland Heights: Fallen trees blocking roads
- Parma Heights: Extensive damage to apartment complexes
- Mayfield: Church steeple blown over
Local authorities are working to clear roads, remove hazards, and provide assistance to affected residents. Many communities have opened cooling centers and comfort stations for those without power.
Communities are conducting damage assessments and offering safety tips for dealing with prolonged outages. Residents are advised to stay away from downed power lines, use generators safely, and dispose of perishable food left unrefrigerated for over four hours.
Cell service providers are also working to restore impacted networks, primarily due to power outages affecting cell sites.
As recovery efforts continue, residents are urged to exercise caution when traveling, treat non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops, and stay informed through local authorities and FirstEnergy's outage map for updates on power restoration.
For emergency assistance or information on available resources, residents can call 211 to reach the United Way Help Center.
📰 Storm Update Directly From the City of Mentor
(Wednesday) Power remains out for much of Lake County as a result of yesterday’s storms. Here are some things to keep in mind while First Energy crews work on getting the lights back on.
The city has been notified by First Energy that they are currently engaged in over 3,200 hazard calls involving downed live wires throughout Northeast Ohio. As such, residents should prepare for this to be a potential multi-day outage. Call 911 to report a downed power line. Do not call 911 to enquire on the status of a power outage. Dispatch does not have that information.
Please report all outages directly to First Energy at 1-888-544-4877 or https://www.firstenergycorp.com/outages_help/Report_Power_Outages.html
If you approach an intersection without a functioning traffic signal, remember to treat it as a four-way stop.
Waste Management curbside collection has been cancelled in the city of Mentor for today, August 7, 2024, due to last night’s storms. Collections will be delayed one day this week.
Mentor Public Works will pick up excess yard debris as a result of yesterday’s storms. Limbs may not exceed 6-inches in diameter and must be cut to lengths of less than 8-feet. Contact Public Works at [email protected] or 440-974-5781 to schedule pickup.

🏡 Pet Safety: Puppy-Proofing Your Home
Puppy-Proofing Your Home: Ensuring a Safe Haven for Your New Furry Friend
Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting experience, but it's crucial to ensure your living space is safe for your curious canine companion. Puppy-proofing your home helps prevent accidents and keeps your furry friend out of harm's way. Here's how to create a secure environment for your new pup:
Secure Hazardous Items Store cleaning products, medications, and chemicals in cabinets with childproof locks. Keep toxic plants, such as lilies and azaleas, out of reach. Ensure trash cans have tight-fitting lids to prevent your puppy from accessing potentially dangerous items.
Tidy Up Cords and Small Objects Puppies love to chew, so keep electrical cords, chargers, and small objects like coins or buttons out of reach. Use cord protectors or tape cords to baseboards to prevent chewing and potential electrocution.
Create Safe Spaces Use baby gates to block off areas that aren't puppy-proof or to restrict access to stairs. Provide a comfortable crate or designated area where your puppy can rest safely when unsupervised.
Secure Furniture Anchor bookcases and televisions to prevent them from tipping if your energetic pup decides to climb or jump. Remove or secure tablecloths that could be pulled down, potentially causing injury.
Mind the Gap Check for small spaces where your puppy might get stuck, such as behind appliances or under furniture. Block these areas or keep a close eye on your pup when exploring.
Outdoor Safety Ensure your yard is securely fenced and free from toxic plants or pesticides. Remove or fence off water features to prevent drowning risks.
Provide Appropriate Toys Offer a variety of safe, puppy-appropriate toys to redirect chewing behavior away from household items. Avoid toys with small parts that could be swallowed.
Regular Inspections Conduct frequent safety checks of your home, looking for new hazards as your puppy grows and becomes more adventurous.
By taking these precautions, you'll create a safe environment where your puppy can explore, play, and grow without unnecessary risks. Remember, supervision is key – always keep a watchful eye on your new furry family member as they adjust to their new home.

⚾ Guardians Swept by Diamondbacks in Doubleheader
The Cleveland Guardians suffered a tough doubleheader sweep against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, extending their losing streak to five games. The Guardians dropped the first game 7-3 and the nightcap 5-3 at Progressive Field.
Former Guardian Josh Bell haunted his old team, blasting two home runs in the second game. Bell's solo shot in the second inning and two-run blast in the third put Arizona ahead early. David Fry and José Ramírez responded with homers for Cleveland, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
Ramírez's solo homer in the sixth marked his 30th of the season, a milestone he's now achieved three times in his career. Fry's 10th home run of the year came in the second inning, briefly cutting Arizona's lead in half.
Despite late-game opportunities, the Guardians couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring position. The team stranded seven runners and went 0-for-5 in clutch situations.
Starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco struggled again, falling to 3-10 on the season after allowing four runs, including three home runs. Meanwhile, Arizona's Eduardo Rodriguez improved to 7-0 lifetime against Cleveland in his first start since recovering from a shoulder injury.
Manager Stephen Vogt remained optimistic despite the losses, praising the team's effort and resilience.
The sweep shrunk Cleveland's lead in the AL Central to 3.5 games over Minnesota. The Guardians finished their seven-game homestand with a disappointing 2-5 record.
After an off-day on Thursday, the team heads to Minnesota for a crucial four-game series starting Friday. With the division race tightening, the Guardians will look to bounce back and maintain their lead in the coming weeks.
