🏘️ New York, Chicago, and California Lead in Housing Market Vulnerability

Courtesy: ATTOM Data Solutions
Housing markets nationwide have slowed significantly due to high mortgage rates and a limited supply of available homes, but certain counties are facing a heightened risk of a more severe downturn.
According to a new report released by Attom, regions near major metropolitan areas like New York City, Chicago, and inland California are particularly vulnerable. In contrast, housing markets in the South and Midwest appear to be more stable. The report examined county-level data on key factors such as affordability, underwater mortgages, foreclosure rates, and unemployment to assess the vulnerability of different areas. In total, 589 counties were analyzed in the second quarter of 2024.
Counties in New York City, Chicago, and California dominated the list of areas at highest risk, a trend consistent with the last five years. In New York’s metro area, seven counties topped the list, while five counties in Chicago and 12 in inland California also showed elevated downturn risks. On the opposite end, metropolitan areas such as Washington, D.C.; Richmond, Virginia; and Nashville, Tennessee had some of the lowest risks.
Various factors contribute to each county's downturn risk. Affordability challenges, where homeownership costs like mortgages, taxes, and insurance outstrip local income levels, were most severe in places like Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York; Riverside, California; Washington County, Utah; and Passaic County, New Jersey.
Areas with the highest rates of underwater mortgages—where homeowners owe more than their property’s worth—include Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana; Peoria County, Illinois; Lake County, Indiana; New Orleans, and Montgomery County, Ohio. Meanwhile, the highest foreclosure rates were found in counties like Charlotte County, Florida; Cumberland and Sussex counties in New Jersey; Dorchester County, South Carolina; and Gregg County, Texas.
Finally, unemployment remains a key factor, especially in several California counties, contributing further to the elevated risk in these areas.

🏈 Penalties and Offensive Woes Doom Browns in Lopsided Defeat to Cowboys
The Cleveland Browns began their 2024 season with a disappointing 33-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, leaving fans with more questions than answers. Despite a brief moment of hope when the Browns took an early 3-0 lead, the game quickly spiraled out of control as Cleveland’s offense struggled to find its footing. The highly anticipated debut of the team's new offensive system, led by coordinator Ken Dorsey, fell flat, and quarterback Deshaun Watson's performance raised concerns about his long-term viability.
Watson, returning from a season-ending shoulder injury, appeared out of sync throughout the game. He completed only 24 of 45 passes for 169 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions, culminating in a dismal 51.1 passer rating—his second-lowest ever in a full game. His deep passing attempts missed their marks, while multiple drops by his receivers, including Elijah Moore and Amari Cooper, compounded the struggles. Injuries on the offensive line further weakened the Browns' offense, forcing backup tackles James Hudson III and Dawand Jones into action, which led to Watson being sacked five times and pressured heavily.
Cleveland's defense showed more promise, managing to sack Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott three times, but they couldn’t stop critical plays. Prescott delivered a steady performance, throwing for 179 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers. The game’s turning point came in the second half when KaVontae Turpin returned a punt for a 60-yard touchdown, widening the Cowboys' lead to 27-3 and all but sealing the Browns' fate.
Penalties were another issue for Cleveland, with the team amassing 11 infractions for 64 yards, adding to their overall ineffectiveness. While the Browns managed two late-game scores, it wasn’t enough to make the contest competitive. The team will now look to regroup as they prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.

⚾ Ohtani Ties Career-High 46th Homer as Dodgers Shut Out Guardians
Shohei Ohtani smashed his 46th home run of the season, tying his career high, as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 4-0 on Sunday in record-tying heat.
The game began at 103 degrees, matching the hottest temperature in Dodger Stadium history. In the fifth inning, Ohtani launched a 450-foot solo homer off Tanner Bibee, reviewed for fairness before counting. Ohtani, who also hit 46 homers in 2021, is eyeing a historic 50-home run, 50-stolen base season, already tallying 46 steals. Bibee (11-7) would go 5 innings and get the loss.
Jack Flaherty pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing four hits. Battling illness and the heat, he improved to 12-6, with a 5-1 record since joining the Dodgers from Detroit. Max Muncy hit his 12th home run of the season in the eighth inning and made a highlight-worthy leaping catch earlier in the game. Cleveland scattered six hits in the game and couldn’t manage a key hit in the game once again.
Mookie Betts tripled in the fourth, scoring the Dodgers' first run on a Will Smith single. Bibee allowed two earned runs in five innings but couldn’t keep up with the Dodgers’ offense.
The sweltering conditions mirrored Game 1 of the 2017 World Series. Fans received vouchers for free water to combat the heat. Injuries continue to plague the Dodgers, with Gavin Stone sidelined due to shoulder inflammation, leaving his postseason status uncertain.
