Part 2 of 3

Which Skilled Career Might Actually Fit Your Student?

A strong paycheck can get a student’s attention. But choosing the right career also means looking at the work itself — the training, schedule, physical demands, environment and the kind of problems they’ll be solving every day.

A good salary can get someone's attention.

It shouldn't make the career decision.

In Part 2 of our Life After High School series, we're asking the questions that matter after the paycheck gets your attention.

Does the student enjoy troubleshooting? Working outdoors? Building things? Technology? Precision work? Helping customers? Would nights, emergencies or heavy physical work be a problem?

The differences can be significant.

An electrician may spend years completing an apprenticeship but earn while training. An HVAC technician needs both mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills. Industrial maintenance can involve factories, automation and occasional nights or overtime. Welding may mean heat, protective equipment and awkward positions. Line work can pay exceptionally well but may involve heights, storms and emergency schedules.

And growth prospects vary, too. BLS currently projects employment growth of 14% for industrial machinery mechanics and related occupations, 11% for HVAC technicians, 9% for electricians and 7% for plumbers and pipefitters through 2035.

The best career isn't necessarily the one with the biggest number.

It's the one whose work, training and lifestyle fit the person doing it.

Tomorrow: exactly where Mentor and Lake County families can start exploring these careers.

👉🏻 Which career actually fits? Our full guide goes beyond the paycheck to compare training, physical demands, schedules, working conditions and personality fit — plus a simple exercise families can use to narrow the choices before committing to a path. Find the Career That Fits

✅ Ohio Begins Process to End E-Check in Lake County — But Testing Continues for Now

A longtime requirement for Lake County drivers could eventually be coming to an end.

Gov. Mike DeWine announced Tuesday that he has directed the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to begin the process of ending E-Check vehicle emissions testing in Lake County and six other Northeast Ohio counties, according to the governor’s office.

The move follows a June decision by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that redesignated the Cleveland region as meeting the federal standard for ground-level ozone. The seven-county area includes Lake, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties.

For Mentor and Lake County drivers, however, there is one important point: E-Check has not ended.

According to the governor’s office, Ohio EPA is expected to open the proposal for public comment and hold a public meeting in November. After reviewing public input, the state plans to submit its request to the U.S. EPA before the end of 2026.

Federal approval is required before E-Check can actually be eliminated.

Until then, Lake County remains an E-Check county. If your vehicle currently requires a test for registration, continue getting it as usual.

👉🏻 Want to know why Ohio is making the change, which vehicles still require testing and what has to happen before E-Check can actually end? We break it down on our website mentorlocalbuzz.com.

🌿 Live Better: Build Your Personal Recovery Menu Before You Need It

When your energy is already running low, deciding how to recharge can feel like one more thing you have to do. A simple recovery menu puts a few good choices within easy reach.

There are plenty of good ways to recover from a demanding day. The problem is remembering any of them when you are already tired, irritated or mentally spent.

That is where a personal recovery menu can help.

Instead of deciding from scratch what might make you feel better, create a short list of restorative choices before you need them. Organize it by how much time and energy you actually have.

For five minutes, your menu might include sitting outside with no phone, stretching gently, closing your eyes in a quiet room, making tea, listening to one favorite song or taking a few slow laps around the house.

With 20 minutes, you might choose a shower, a short walk, a phone call with someone who settles you, light reading, time with a pet, a simple hobby or a quiet meal without a screen.

Your longer options could include an afternoon outdoors, a nap, a favorite movie, gardening, a longer conversation, an easy outing or simply protecting an evening from obligations.

The important part is variety. Some days your body needs rest. Other days your mind needs less input, you need connection, or you simply need a change of surroundings.

Also notice the difference between recovery and avoidance. Recovery should leave you a little more restored or capable afterward. An activity that keeps you stuck, makes you feel worse or helps you postpone something important may not belong on the menu.

Keep cost, weather, location and mobility in mind. A useful recovery menu is not aspirational. It is realistic.

Write yours down, keep it somewhere visible and revise it as you learn what actually works.

When your energy is low, you do not need another decision to make. You need a few good choices already waiting for you.

👉🏻 Want to build your own? We’ve created a simple way to organize a recovery menu around the time, energy and circumstances you actually have. BUILD YOUR RECOVERY MENU.

🏃 Mentor Cross Country Showing Serious Depth as October Arrives

Mentor's cross-country teams are putting together some impressive numbers as the season heads into October — and the Cardinals' depth may be the biggest reason for optimism.

In OhioVarsity's latest data-based boys power rankings, Mentor sits No. 1 based on the combined season-best 5K times of each team's five fastest runners. Gabe Tulenson leads that group at 15:47.50, followed closely by Corbin Ott at 15:49.00 and Carter Schaubert at 15:53.00. Vinny Klima and Shawn Castiglione round out a remarkably tight top five.

Mentor's younger runners are contributing, too. Sophomore Ott owns the fastest season-best time among the underclassmen tracked by OhioVarsity, while freshman Isaac Bogner has run 16:35.10.

At Saturday's Todd Clark Invitational, a different Mentor group showed that depth. Drew Maynard ran 16:48.80, followed by Bogner at 16:53.30 and Cody Klasch at 16:53.80 as Mentor finished fifth with 146 points.

The girls have also posted strong season-best numbers. Mentor currently ranks second in OhioVarsity's five-runner model, led by sophomore Carmella Curtis' 18:35.70.

One important distinction: these rankings combine each runner's best time from anywhere this season and are not an official state poll or the result of a single head-to-head meet.

With October arriving, Mentor has both front-end speed and plenty of runners capable of contributing — exactly the kind of depth that becomes increasingly important as championship season approaches.

⚾ Guardians Get Early ALDS Times as Playoff Opponent Takes Shape

Guardians fans can officially start planning their weekend.

Cleveland will open the American League Division Series at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 3, at Progressive Field, followed by Game 2 at 5 p.m. Monday, October 5. Both games will be nationally televised on TBS.

The Guardians earned the No. 2 seed in the American League after winning the AL Central, giving Cleveland a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the best-of-five Division Series.

Their opponent is still being decided.

Cleveland will face the winner of the Houston Astros–Chicago White Sox Wild Card Series. That means the Guardians can watch this week's opening round while preparing for whichever club survives. The White Sox currently lead the series with the Astros 1-0.

After the first two games in Cleveland, the series shifts to the Wild Card winner's home ballpark for Game 3 on Wednesday, October 7.

If needed, Game 4 will be Thursday, October 8, with a deciding Game 5 returning to Cleveland on Saturday, October 10. Start times for those games have not yet been announced.

The winner advances to the American League Championship Series, putting Cleveland four Division Series victories—actually, three wins in this best-of-five—from moving one step closer to the World Series.
