🏫 Mentor Schools Details Potential $9.6 Million in Cuts if Issue 5 Fails

Illustrative image of an empty school hallway with lockers and an open classroom doorway.

Mentor Schools has released a more detailed look at what could change if Issue 5, the district’s 3.5-mill operating levy, does not pass in November.

According to Mentor Schools, the district would need to reduce expenses by at least another $9.6 million heading into the 2027–28 school year. Current district planning includes reductions of approximately 77 certified positions, 39 classified support positions and five administrative positions — about 121 positions altogether.

The district says fewer teachers would mean larger elementary class sizes and could result in reductions to art, music, STEAM, gifted services and secondary electives. Mentor Schools also says its current planning includes eliminating six school resource officer positions and 10 Signature Health counselor positions. Those positions are listed separately from the district’s 121-position staffing breakdown.

Transportation could also move closer to state-required minimums, while district funding for athletics could be reduced — potentially leading to higher participation fees or greater reliance on fundraising. Clubs and other extracurricular activities could face changes as well.

Mentor Schools stresses that individual reductions have not all been finalized.

Issue 5 is a five-year operating levy expected by the district to generate about $9.6 million annually. Mentor Schools estimates the cost at approximately $123 per year, or $10.25 per month, for each $100,000 of property value.

➡️ What could those reductions mean for class sizes, busing, counselors, electives and sports? We broke down Mentor Schools’ current plan — including what has and has not been decided — on our website.

The answer depends on more than interest. Adults have to weigh training time, starting pay, benefits, family expenses, physical demands and whether they can keep working while they learn.

The good news: Lake County adults have places to start, including OhioMeansJobs Lake County, Lakeland Community College, Auburn Career Center and apprenticeship programs.

➡️ Our Bonus Guide walks through the questions adults should answer before making a move — including whether prior experience transfers, how paid apprenticeships work, where training assistance may be available and how to compare the financial picture.

🌿 Evergreen: Tell One Story Someone Else Would Never Know to Ask About

You don’t have to write your life story. Start with one moment — especially the kind of ordinary story your family may never realize they should ask about.

Some of the most valuable family stories are not the big milestone stories. They are the small ones no one thinks to ask about: the first week at a new job, the neighbor who quietly helped during a hard season, the family rule that made no sense until you learned where it came from, or the ordinary afternoon that changed how you saw someone.

This week, try something simpler than “write your life story.” Choose one moment.

Pick a story with a setting, a few people and one detail that would disappear if you did not explain it. Instead of saying, “We used to visit Grandma every Sunday,” add what made those Sundays yours: who drove, what was always on the table, what everyone argued about, what made you laugh, or what you understood only years later.

A useful story usually answers four questions:

  • Where were you?

  • Who was there?

  • What happened that someone else would not know?

  • Why does that detail matter to you now?

You do not need polished writing. You can type a page, write it by hand, record a voice memo, or ask someone you trust to sit with you while you tell it. The goal is not to make it perfect. The goal is to finish one story with enough context that another person can understand why it mattered.

One important boundary: if the story includes someone else’s private experience, pause before sharing identifying or sensitive details. You can preserve your own perspective without turning another person’s story into public family history.

Start small. One ordinary story, told clearly, can carry more meaning than a long list of dates and achievements. And once you finish one, you may notice the next story waiting behind it.

➡️ Continue on the website: On the website, we’ve turned this into a simple one-story prompt card, with a short example and easy ways to record or write your story today.

🏈 Browns Beat Steelers 27-24 on Szmyt’s 56-Yard Winner

The Browns are finding ways to finish.

Andre Szmyt drilled a career-long 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining Thursday night, lifting Cleveland to a 27-24 win over Pittsburgh and its third straight victory.

The Steelers had erased a 21-7 Cleveland lead and tied the game at 24 with 1:42 remaining, but Deshaun Watson answered. He moved the Browns into field-goal range on the final possession, setting up Szmyt’s winning kick.

Watson finished 24 of 33 for 268 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Cleveland erupted for 21 points in the second quarter. Jaleel McLaughlin and Quinshon Judkins scored on the ground, and Watson connected with former Bowling Green standout Harold Fannin Jr. for a 2-yard touchdown.

Cleveland’s defense also made its presence felt against Aaron Rodgers, recording five sacks and two interceptions. Denzel Ward’s second-quarter pick helped swing momentum toward the Browns, while Grant Delpit intercepted Rodgers on Pittsburgh’s final desperation throw.

The victory moves Cleveland to 3-1 for the first time since 2021 and gives the Browns three consecutive wins after their season-opening loss.

Cleveland gets an extended break before traveling to face the New York Jets on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.

🏈 Mentor Heads to Strongsville With GCC Streak on the Line

The Mentor Cardinals take their 5–1 record on the road Friday night, visiting the Strongsville Mustangs for another Greater Cleveland Conference matchup.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, October 2, at Strongsville. Mentor enters the game 3–0 in GCC play, while Strongsville is 3–3 overall and 2–1 in the conference.

The Cardinals have been rolling since their lone loss of the season, winning three straight conference games by scores of 63–18 over Brunswick, 35–14 over Riverside and 49–14 over Cleveland Heights.

One of the biggest reasons has been running back Braylon Callahan, who rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns on just 13 carries against Cleveland Heights last week. His recent production has given Mentor another dangerous dimension alongside quarterback Brogan Jones and the Cardinals' passing attack.

Strongsville will be looking to rebound after a 48–14 loss at Riverside last Friday. Before that setback, the Mustangs had won back-to-back GCC games over Cleveland Heights and Euclid.

Friday also carries growing postseason importance. In the latest OHSAA computer ratings, Mentor sits No. 2 in Division I, Region 1, while Strongsville is No. 10.

➡️ Why could Friday night's matchup matter well beyond one conference win? See the revealing Riverside comparison, what Mentor's No. 2 playoff position could mean, and the three biggest things to watch when the Cardinals take the field in Strongsville. Read about it here on mentorlocalbuzz.com.

🏈 Homecoming Showdown: Lake Catholic, Elyria Catholic Meet With Matching 3–3 Records

Lake Catholic and Elyria Catholic arrive at Friday night with identical 3–3 records — and something even more important in common: both are 1–0 in North Coast Conference play.

The Cougars return home after producing their highest-scoring performance of the season in a 27–13 victory at CVCA last Friday. Just as important has been Lake Catholic’s defense, which has held five consecutive opponents to 14 points or fewer.

Elyria Catholic brings momentum of its own. The Panthers have won two straight, defeating St. Vincent-St. Mary 42–14 before opening conference play with a 14–7 victory over Padua Franciscan. Through six games, Elyria Catholic has scored 147 points, creating an intriguing Friday-night matchup between a productive Panthers offense and a Lake Catholic defense that has repeatedly kept games under control.

Adding to the atmosphere, Friday is part of Lake Catholic’s Homecoming Weekend, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jerome T. Osborne, Sr. Stadium.

➡️ On the website, we break down the numbers behind Lake Catholic’s five-game defensive surge, Elyria Catholic’s biggest offensive threat, three keys that could shape Friday night — and the recent history the Cougars would love to repeat.
