🚧 Nightly Brookview Lane Closure Begins Tonight in Mentor
Drivers near Johnnycake Ridge Road will want to plan for a temporary nighttime closure beginning tonight.
Brookview Lane will be closed at Johnnycake Ridge Road from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly from October 5 through October 19, according to the City of Mentor. The closure is needed for work connected to construction of the new fire station on Plaza Boulevard.
The city also says intermittent daytime closures may occur during the project, so drivers who regularly use Brookview Lane should be prepared for occasional delays outside the overnight hours as well.
Motorists affected by the closure are being directed to Mustang Lane as an alternate route.
The work is scheduled to continue for roughly two weeks, making this a good one to remember if Brookview Lane is part of your evening commute or regular neighborhood route.
📰 Autism Services Provider Proposes Tyler Boulevard Medical Office in Mentor
A provider specializing in autism-related therapy services is proposing a medical office on Tyler Boulevard in Mentor, but the project must first receive city approval.
The Mentor Municipal Planning Commission is scheduled to consider a conditional-use permit for Blue Lakes Behavioral Health at 8832–8836 Tyler Boulevard during its October 15 meeting.
The city describes the request as a proposed medical office in an M-2 Heavy Manufacturing district, where the use requires Planning Commission review before it can move forward.
Blue Lakes says its broader services include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech and language pathology, occupational therapy and physical therapy for people with autism and their families. The city's current notice does not specify which of those services would be offered at the proposed Mentor location.
For now, the Tyler Boulevard office remains a proposal. No Planning Commission approval has been granted, and the hearing is the next step in the city's review process.
The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, October 15, in Council Chambers at the Mentor Municipal Center, 8500 Civic Center Boulevard.
➡️ On our website, we explain why the proposal needs Planning Commission approval, what Blue Lakes provides and what an approval on October 15 would—and would not—mean for the proposed Mentor location.
❤️ A Mentor Tradition of Warmth Continues in Mike Warner’s Memory
A tradition started by a beloved Mentor community member is continuing this October — with the simple goal of helping people stay warm.
Hope Ridge United Methodist Church is holding its Mike Warner Memorial October Coat Drive, continuing an annual effort Warner began to support The Sub Zero Mission and people experiencing homelessness. Throughout October, the church is collecting adult winter coats, hats, gloves, men’s boots, sleeping bags and new men’s socks.
Those donations become part of a much larger effort. During its 2025–26 outreach season, The Sub Zero Mission distributed 36,496 warming items and helped 2,501 people across communities including Mentor, Painesville and other parts of Northeast Ohio.
For Hope Ridge, the October collection is about more than coats. It’s a way to continue one neighbor’s tradition of looking out for people who may be facing winter without a warm place to call home.

🏠 THE REAL ESTATE QUESTION: Would You Still Want This House Without the Staging?
A beautifully staged house can make imagining a new life feel almost effortless. The dining table is set, the sofa fits the room perfectly, and every surface seems to have exactly enough on it.
But the furniture, art, rugs and accessories are not the house.
That distinction matters because presentation can answer questions for us before we realize we have asked them. A carefully chosen sectional can suggest where conversation happens. A narrow console can make a tight passage look purposeful. Small-scale furniture can make a room appear more generous than it might feel with the pieces you already own.
So try a different question: What would still appeal to you if the rooms were empty?
Mentally remove the seller’s furniture first. Notice what remains—the windows, natural light, ceiling height, flooring, built-ins, doors, room proportions and the relationship between spaces. Then imagine your own ordinary possessions arriving: the chair you actually read in, the table where mail accumulates, the television, dog bed, children’s things, bookcases or oversized dresser you have no intention of replacing.
This is not about deciding whether your belongings are stylish enough for the house. It is about seeing whether the house works when someone else’s visual story is no longer doing the work.
Pay particular attention to scale. A room can be attractive and still be smaller, narrower or less flexible than the staging makes it seem. At the same time, an empty or plainly furnished room can hide qualities you may value for years.
The useful test is not whether you can reproduce the listing photos.
It is whether the features you genuinely like survive after those photos disappear.
Before deciding what you love about a house, picture it on moving day: empty rooms, bare counters, no perfectly placed pillows.
What are you still glad is there?
