📰 Mentor’s New Veteran Honor Walls to Be Dedicated on Veterans Day

A new permanent memorial honoring veterans and their spouses is nearing completion at Mentor Municipal Cemetery, adding hundreds of dedicated spaces for local military families.

The city’s new Veteran Honor Walls include 14 columbaria containing 448 niches. Each niche can hold the cremated remains of an eligible U.S. Armed Forces veteran and the veteran’s spouse.

Mentor City Council will formally dedicate the Honor Walls during the city’s Veterans Day Memorial Service on Wednesday, Nov. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. The ceremony will start at the cemetery’s Memorial Promenade before attendees walk to the south end of the cemetery for the dedication.

“These Honor Walls provide a dedicated place for family and visitors to remember the special men and women who wore the uniforms of our country and those who shared that life of service,” City Manager Kenneth J. Filipiak said.

Niches will be available for purchase beginning Nov. 1, with inurnments beginning after Veterans Day. Proof of military service will be required.

The cemetery is located at 6881 Hopkins Road.

🏭 Mentor Developer Steps In … From Demolition to Redevelopment

A Mentor developer is leading the redevelopment of a historic Cleveland factory complex that had faced extensive demolition, giving one of Northeast Ohio’s early automotive landmarks a potential new chapter.

Developer John Ellis of Mentor, through Winton Works Ltd., led the $300,000 acquisition of the former Winton Motor Carriage Works on Berea Road in Cleveland’s Cudell neighborhood. The 7.3-acre property contains about 260,000 square feet of remaining brick factory buildings.

Earlier this year, the previous owner sought permission to demolish approximately 183,000 square feet of the complex as part of an effort to reposition the property for future industrial use.

The new ownership is taking a different direction.

Ellis told NEOtrans that work has begun to secure and maintain the buildings and that the property is expected to be redeveloped in phases. Prospective tenants have already been identified, although their names have not yet been announced.

The property also carries a remarkable connection to the earliest days of America’s automobile industry. Alexander Winton began building automobiles in Cleveland in the 1890s, years before Detroit became synonymous with the industry.

➡️ There’s much more behind those century-old brick walls — including why Winton once stood near the top of America’s emerging auto industry, the surprising role one of its cars played in U.S. history, and what the Mentor developer says could come next.

📚 Good News: Mentor School’s New Vending Machine Dispenses…

Image note: This is an illustrated version of the book vending machine created for editorial purposes and does not depict the actual Sterling Morton Elementary School or its book vending machine.

There’s a new vending machine at Sterling Morton Elementary in Mentor — but students won’t find candy bars, chips or soda inside.

This one is stocked with books.

The school recently introduced a new book vending machine donated by the Sterling Morton PTA, giving students a fun new way to put reading in the spotlight.

But the best part may be how the school plans to use it.

Every Sterling Morton student will have an opportunity to pick out a birthday book during their birthday month.

That turns something as simple as choosing a book into a small celebration students can look forward to — while making sure everyone gets an opportunity to participate.

There’s also something wonderfully kid-friendly about the idea. The familiar excitement of walking up to a vending machine and making a choice is still there. The difference is what comes out.

Instead of a snack, it’s a new story.

And thanks to the PTA, Sterling Morton has found a pretty memorable way to make books feel like something worth celebrating.

Sometimes the best things coming out of a vending machine don’t need a nutrition label. 📚

➡️ But the machine itself may not be the most interesting part of this story. See why Sterling Morton’s birthday-book idea gets something especially right about encouraging young readers.

🏠 The Home Front: What Your Furnace Filter Label Actually Tells You

The numbers on the frame can help you find a replacement, but the right filter is the one your particular HVAC system is designed to use.

You pull the old furnace filter, carry its size to the store and find a wall of replacements that all seem to promise something better. One says MERV 8. Another says MERV 13. Others use MPR or FPR. It is easy to assume the biggest number is the safest choice.

It is not that simple.

The right filter starts with your equipment, not the shelf.

First, read the size printed on the filter frame. Record all three dimensions. If the label also lists an actual size, save that too. A filter sold as 16 x 25 x 1, for example, may measure slightly smaller than those nominal dimensions.

Next, note the filter type and rating. MERV is a standardized measure of particle-capture performance. MPR and FPR are proprietary rating systems, so their numbers are not directly interchangeable with MERV.

Then check the furnace, air-handler or filter-cabinet instructions. Higher-efficiency filters can capture smaller particles, but they may also create more resistance to airflow. EPA guidance recommends MERV 13, or as high a rating as the system fan and filter slot can accommodate. Manufacturer guidance makes the same practical point: compatibility matters.

Your useful change this week is to create a replacement record before you discard the old filter. Write down the nominal size, actual size if shown, filter type, approved rating, model or part number, airflow direction and replacement guidance.

If the filter does not fit properly, the manual is unclear, or you want to move to a substantially different filter, stop guessing. A qualified HVAC professional can confirm what the system can accommodate.

Once that specification is recorded, the next replacement becomes a repeatable task instead of another aisle full of uncertainty.

➡️ Before your next filter run, use our complete filter-label guide, five-minute compatibility check and saveable replacement card to identify exactly what your HVAC system needs.

⚾ Guardians Fall, Face Elimination

The Guardians are headed to Chicago with their season on the line.

Cleveland fell 4-3 to the White Sox Monday at Progressive Field, dropping into a 2-0 hole in the best-of-five American League Division Series. The Guardians must win Game 3 Wednesday to keep their postseason run alive.

Cleveland started quickly. Steven Kwan and José Ramírez scored in the first inning, giving the Guardians a 2-0 lead after being shut out in Game 1.

Starter Gavin Williams struck out 11 batters while allowing two runs and four hits over five-plus innings.

The game turned in the sixth, when Chicago scored three times. Braden Montgomery’s two-run double put the White Sox ahead before Chase Meidroth added an RBI single for a 4-2 lead.

Cleveland’s offense struggled to answer, with White Sox reliever Sean Burke retiring 13 consecutive Guardians during one stretch.

The Guardians made one final push in the eighth. Chase DeLauter singled and Jo Adell followed with an RBI triple, cutting the deficit to 4-3, but Cleveland couldn’t bring home the tying run.

Game 3 is Wednesday in Chicago, with the Guardians needing a win to extend the series — and their season.
