🪏 Uptown Mentor Breaks Ground, Targets Early 2028 Opening

After more than six years of planning, Uptown Mentor has reached a long-awaited milestone, with developers now targeting early 2028 for occupancy.

Developer Alison Sikora, city officials and project partners gathered Friday, October 9, at 8677 Mentor Avenue for a ceremonial groundbreaking, according to an October 11 report by Bryson Durst of The News-Herald.

The approximately $10 million redevelopment will transform aging commercial properties in Mentor's Old Village into a four-story building featuring 45 market-rate apartments above space for potential restaurants, shops and other businesses.

Geis Companies, the project's design-build partner, independently confirmed the groundbreaking and described approximately 10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

The apartments will include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom layouts. Sikora told The News-Herald that each unit will have an underground parking space, while residents can enjoy amenities including billiards, coworking and conference spaces, a dog-wash station and a pocket park.

The project has also received more than $7 million in economic incentives from government sources, according to Sikora.

Mentor City Manager Ken Filipiak believes the redevelopment could help establish a more walkable neighborhood center and encourage additional investment in the Old Village.

➡️ But what will the apartments be like, which businesses might move in, and how does the financing affect Mentor Schools? Our expanded report takes a closer look at the plans, apartment sizes, resident amenities, public funding and what happens next as Uptown Mentor moves toward its anticipated opening.

👻 Mentor Mother and Son Turn Their Garage Into a Halloween Attraction

Some people put a pumpkin on the porch and call it Halloween. A Mentor mother and son have taken a considerably more ambitious approach.

Stacy Ingersoll and her son Tyler have transformed part of their family home into an elaborate haunted garage, turning their shared enthusiasm for the spooky season into a neighborhood attraction.

Their creation goes well beyond ordinary Halloween decorations… and this isn't just a garage filled with skeletons.

Public listings for what appears to be the same Mentor attraction describe a walk-through experience featuring themed haunted rooms, animated decorations, surprise scares and even additional decorated carports.

The annual display has grown into a local Halloween tradition. A listing from last year reported approximately 1,000 visitors during the previous season, although that figure has not been independently verified.

Now, there's another interesting development.

A newly updated Halloween listing advertises a sixth season in 2026 — and says this will be the attraction's final year at its current location.

For a family project that began with a love of Halloween, it's a reminder of how something created at home can become something the neighborhood looks forward to.

➡️ Want to experience the haunted garage yourself? We've gathered the advertised 2026 dates, visiting hours, admission details and the important development surrounding its future. See the complete story on our website.

Silver ran 874% from its 2020 low to a January 2026 peak above $117, then fell 53%. It now trades near $68, well above the old $50 ceiling. See full analysis.

🏠 THE REAL ESTATE QUESTION: What Can a Floor Plan Tell You That Listing Photos Cannot?

Beautiful listing photos show you the rooms. A floor plan reveals the connections, unexpected routes and important details you might otherwise miss.

The kitchen looks bright. The dining room looks inviting. With matching floors and similar light, the photographs make the two spaces feel like neighbors.

Then you open the floor plan and spot something the photos never showed: a hallway between them.

That small discovery explains why a floor plan deserves more than a quick glance.

Listing photos help you picture individual rooms. A floor plan helps you understand the routes between them. Start at the front door and trace a trip to the kitchen. Do you walk straight in, turn through a hall or pass another room along the way?

Next, follow an ordinary day. Imagine carrying groceries in from the garage, heading to the bathroom from a bedroom or welcoming guests at the entrance. Where are the doors? How many turns are involved? Which spaces sit beside the busiest paths?

Look for the details that the camera may have skipped. Two bedrooms might appear equally private in photographs, but the plan could show one opening directly onto the stair landing. A lovely entry photo might not reveal that the front door opens straight into the living room.

None of these arrangements is automatically good or bad. What matters is knowing what you are looking at.

And remember, the drawing has limits. Marketing floor plans may use approximate measurements, and they may leave out ceiling heights, small changes in floor level or other details. Treat the plan as a source of questions, not a guarantee.

Before your next showing, pick one everyday route and trace it on the drawing. Write down one thing you cannot confirm from the plan or photos. Then walk that route when you visit.

A beautiful photo may get a home onto your list. A few minutes with the floor plan can help you show up with better questions.

🏈 Browns Let Late Lead Slip Away in Frustrating 17–12 Loss to Jets

Cleveland’s three-game winning streak ended Sunday with a 17–12 loss to the New York Jets in rainy New Jersey, undone by a costly special teams mistake and another difficult offensive outing.

The Browns (3–2) took a 12–10 lead with 6:15 remaining when Deshaun Watson found rookie Denzel Boston for a 29-yard touchdown. A missed extra point left Cleveland with only a two-point cushion.

Cleveland’s defense kept creating opportunities, but the offense failed to capitalize. After another three-and-out, a high snap sailed past punter Corey Bojorquez. New York recovered at the Browns’ 23, and Braelon Allen scored three plays later on a 22-yard run, putting the Jets ahead for good.

Offensive struggles continued as Cleveland finished with a season-low 198 net yards and converted just four of 16 third downs. Watson completed 15 of 33 passes for 155 yards and was sacked eight times.

Quincy Williams recorded 11 tackles and three forced fumbles, while Maliek Collins contributed 1.5 of Cleveland’s four sacks.

Injuries also mounted, with rookie receiver KC Concepcion suffering a head injury and Raheim Sanders and Tytus Howard leaving the game.

Up next: Cleveland hosts AFC North rival Baltimore on Sunday, October 18, at 1 p.m.

Mentor High School

Volleyball: Senior setter Addi Keeper recorded 21 assists and 14 digs, while sophomore Ava Garrett added 20 digs and five assists in Mentor’s 3–0 win over Avon on October 8. The individual statistics were posted to MaxPreps on October 11.

Samantha Daugherty contributed 12 kills, and Lindsey Valenty added four. The Cardinals won 25–20, 25–22, 25–21 and next visit Lorain on Tuesday, October 13, at 7 p.m.

Cross country: Mentor’s boys lead OhioVarsity’s area power rankings, which combine five runners’ season-best 5K times, at 79:05.10. Carmella Curtis’ 18:33.60 ranks third on the report’s girls’ season-best 5K list.

Lake Catholic

Girls cross country: Bridget Ward led the Cougars’ finishers at the Legends Meet on October 10 in 24:00.0. Juanita Pacheco ran 25:44.9, Mia Borovic finished in 26:07.1, and Mary Rose Herald clocked 28:28.4. Lake Catholic was listed as an incomplete team and did not receive a team placing.

Girls soccer: The Cougars host Beachwood on Monday, October 12, at 5 p.m. at Osborne Family Field, according to the school calendar.

🐝 Buzz Fact: A finished basement is one of the few places in a home that can start as a family entertainment room and somehow become a museum of broken exercise equipment, Christmas decorations, and furniture nobody likes but everyone is afraid to throw away.
