📰 Mentor Marsh’s Future Takes Shape — Public Meeting Oct. 28

Editorial illustration inspired by Mentor Marsh's autumn landscape. Not an actual photograph of the preserve.

The future of one of Mentor's most treasured natural areas is coming into focus, and residents are invited to see what's taking shape.

A second public meeting for the Mentor Marsh Master Plan is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Springbrook Gardenhouse, 6776 Heisley Road.

This time, the project team will explain how feedback gathered earlier this year is helping shape a long-term vision for the preserve.

The planning effort, involving the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, City of Mentor, Lake County and consulting firm SmithGroup, is examining ways to improve visitor access, infrastructure and educational opportunities while protecting the marsh's delicate ecosystem.

Among the possibilities is a future nature center, although no construction plans have been announced or approved.

The upcoming presentation will also explore how ecology, restoration, preservation, education and cultural storytelling fit into the marsh's future.

The meeting is free, open to everyone and requires no registration.

Why does Mentor Marsh need a master plan in the first place? And what does its remarkable environmental comeback have to do with what happens next?

➡️ Our full report explores the improvements being considered, the marsh's extraordinary recovery and the important questions residents should watch as the planning process moves forward.

🧑🏻‍🎨 Mentor Seeks Volunteer to Help Shape Local Arts Programs

Wildwood Cultureal Center

Residents interested in supporting Mentor's arts and cultural activities have another opportunity to get involved — but the application deadline is approaching.

The City of Mentor is seeking one volunteer to serve on its Community Arts Commission, an advisory group that helps guide the development of cultural programs, activities and events throughout the community.

The commission works with the city's Parks, Recreation & Public Facilities Department, including programs associated with Wildwood Cultural Center. Members meet on the first Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at Wildwood, 7645 Little Mountain Road.

Who can apply? Applicants must be qualified Mentor electors. The opening is for the remainder of an existing term ending December 31, 2026, rather than a new three-year appointment.

Application deadline: Monday, October 26, at 5 p.m.

Interested residents must submit a completed board or commission application and current résumé to the Clerk of Council. Applications may be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Mentor City Hall, 8500 Civic Center Boulevard.

For questions, contact Clerk of Council Julie A. Schiavoni at 440-974-5700.

🎃 Mentor Seniors Help Bring Halloween Village to Life

Event Details: Tuesday, October 20 | 6–7:30 p.m.
Location: CareCore at Mentor, 8881 Schaefer St., Mentor.

At CareCore at Mentor, seniors aren't just getting ready to celebrate Halloween — they're helping create the fun for local children and families.

The senior care community will host its Halloween Village on Tuesday, October 20, from 6–7:30 p.m., bringing together residents, children, families, staff, and community partners for an evening of fall festivities. RSVP by October 15th!

Visitors can enjoy trick-or-treat stations, costume contests, games, activities, snacks, and refreshments. Even Mickey and Minnie Mouse are expected to make a special appearance!

But what makes this Halloween celebration especially heartwarming is the role the residents will play.

Rather than simply watching the festivities, seniors will help plan the event, welcome families, host activity stations, interact with children, and even serve as judges throughout the evening.

For the youngsters, it's a chance to show off their costumes and collect some Halloween treats. For the residents, it's an opportunity to share in the excitement, make new connections, and enjoy a neighborhood tradition alongside the next generation.

Sometimes, the sweetest Halloween memories aren't about the candy — they're about the people who share the fun.

RSVP by October 15th!

🌿LIVE BETTER: How to Begin Moving Without Turning Everything Into a Workout

Getting more active doesn't have to mean starting a fitness program. A better first step may be finding movement that fits your abilities, your surroundings and your everyday life.

Getting more active sounds simple until you start wondering what actually counts.

Does walking around the house matter? What about gardening, carrying groceries or taking the stairs? And what if some of those activities aren't comfortable anymore?

The good news is that physical activity doesn't have to look like a workout. Everyday movement counts, and finding an appropriate place to begin matters more than trying to meet someone else's expectations.

Start with what your body can manage.

Someone who spends most of the day sitting may have a different starting point from someone who regularly gardens, walks or handles physically demanding household tasks.

Age alone doesn't determine what's appropriate. Current ability, balance, mobility, health conditions and recent activity all deserve consideration.

Think about your starting conditions.

Before choosing an activity, consider three things:

Your ability: What movements already feel comfortable and familiar?

Your surroundings: Would a level walking surface, supportive chair or familiar indoor space make movement easier?

Your effort: Can you begin comfortably without immediately feeling overwhelmed?

These questions aren't a fitness test. They're a way to identify activities that fit your circumstances.

Give yourself permission to begin gently.

You might walk at a comfortable pace, spend time on a familiar household task or explore an adapted activity that suits your abilities.

There's no need to turn every opportunity to move into a performance goal.

Know when to ask for guidance.

Pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath or other concerning symptoms shouldn't be ignored or pushed through.

If a medical condition, recent injury or ongoing symptoms make you uncertain about appropriate activity, speak with a healthcare professional.

A sensible beginning doesn't have to be impressive.

It simply needs to make sense for you.

Movement can begin with ordinary activities, reasonable expectations and a willingness to respect what your body can comfortably manage today.

➡️ Not sure where to begin? Our expanded Live Better guide explores four everyday starting situations, the conditions that can make movement more comfortable, and questions worth asking when you need professional guidance.

⚾ Costly Mistake Sinks Guardians as Rays Even ALCS Series

One bad inning. Three unearned runs. And a missed opportunity for Cleveland to take a commanding lead in the American League Championship Series.

The Guardians saw their four-game postseason winning streak snapped Tuesday night, falling 3–1 to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field as the best-of-seven series evened at one game apiece.

The damage came in the fourth inning, when a ground ball slipped through José Ramírez’s legs at third base, allowing Tampa Bay to break a scoreless tie. Liam Hicks followed with a two-run single, and suddenly Cleveland was staring at a 3–0 deficit.

It was a frustrating turn for rookie Parker Messick, who battled through five innings, allowing six hits and three runs — all unearned.

The Guardians' bats offered little help. Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta overpowered Cleveland with six scoreless innings and six strikeouts, repeatedly challenging hitters with a blazing fastball.

Cleveland finally broke through in the seventh when Chase DeLauter ripped an RBI double into the right-field corner. But with runners at second and third, Jo Adell struck out to end the threat. The Guardians never seriously threatened again.

Now comes the good news for Cleveland.

The Guardians accomplished what they needed on the road, splitting the first two games against a 98-win Rays team. The series now shifts to Progressive Field, where Cleveland will have its home crowd behind it.

Game 3 is Thursday at 6 p.m., with Gavin Williams expected to take the mound against Tampa Bay’s Griffin Jax.

The series is tied. Home-field advantage now belongs to Cleveland. And the Guardians still have plenty to play for.

The Harvey victory was Mentor’s fourth consecutive win, and Tuesday’s result extended the streak to five matches. The Cardinals enter the final stretch of the fall season with five consecutive victories and a winning record.
