⚡Power Outage Cancels Mentor–Lorain Football Game; Saturday's JV Contest Also Called Off

A reported power outage at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium brought an unexpected end to Friday night's high school football plans, forcing the cancellation of the Mentor Cardinals' scheduled matchup against the Lorain Titans.
The teams were set to meet Friday, October 16, at 7 p.m., but multiple local Facebook reports pointed to a loss of electrical power at the stadium as the reason the game was called off.
Severe weather affected portions of Northeast Ohio on Friday, although it has not been officially confirmed whether the storms caused the stadium's power failure.
Saturday's junior varsity matchup was also canceled. Lorain High School's official athletics website confirms that the October 17 JV game against Mentor, scheduled to be played in Lorain, will not take place. A reason for that separate cancellation has not been verified.
As of Saturday morning, no makeup date or official determination regarding Friday's varsity contest has been confirmed.
Up next for the Cardinals: Mentor (6–2) travels to face the Euclid Panthers on Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m., looking to return to action after an unusual interruption to its football schedule.
🩺 Lake County Warns of Possible Measles Exposure at Wickliffe Market
Lake County health officials are warning anyone who visited a Wickliffe grocery store earlier this month that they may have been exposed to measles.
The Lake County General Health District says a person with measles visited SweetBerry Fresh Market, 30022 Euclid Avenue, on October 3, 5 and 6 while contagious.
The possible exposure period was 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on each date. Those hours include time after the individual left because the measles virus can remain in the air for up to two hours.
Symptoms can include high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash. Officials say symptoms from these exposures could develop between October 10 and October 27, or later for people with weakened immune systems.
Anyone developing possible measles symptoms should call ahead before visiting a medical facility to avoid exposing others.
➡️ An important distinction: When the health district issued its warning October 14, there were no known measles cases in Lake County. The alert concerns a possible exposure, not a declared local outbreak. See the full article on our website for more information.
🍎 Ohio Court Rules Against EdChoice, but Mentor-Area Scholarships Continue

An Ohio appeals court has ruled the state's EdChoice private-school scholarship programs unconstitutional as currently structured. But families relying on those scholarships have an important reassurance: the program remains in place.
The unanimous October 15 decision upheld a 2025 lower-court ruling. Judges paused enforcement while another appeal is anticipated, so vouchers have not been canceled.
The case has a direct Mentor connection. In June, the Mentor Public Schools board voted 4–1 to join the statewide lawsuit, reflecting concerns about public-school funding. The decision also sparked local disagreement over parental choice and the district's participation in the case.
Lake Catholic High School and St. Mary of the Assumption School are two schools in Mentor that both provide EdChoice scholarship information to families. The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland says scholarships remain intact for the 2026–27 school year.
Supporters say the program gives families more education options. The court concluded that EdChoice's present structure places public schools at a constitutional disadvantage. Its ruling does not declare every possible school voucher program unlawful.
The case unfolds as Mentor Schools prepares for a separate 3.5-mill operating levy on the November ballot. The court ruling does not change that vote.
Silver Has Beaten Gold Before. It's Doing It Again.
From 1974 to 1987, silver more than doubled gold's returns. After 2008, it beat gold five-fold in three years. Since March 2020, silver is up 402% against gold's 186%. Our research team's free playbook explains why, and how the team would position.

🍽️ Dinner RESCUE: Soup Night, Upgraded: Melty Meatballs or Street-Corn Chowder
Two unexpected dinner favorites bring melted cheese, savory meatballs, smoky corn and tortilla crunch to the table. Soup night just got a lot more interesting.
Imagine dunking a piece of bubbling Swiss-cheese toast into savory onion broth while a forkful of tender beef meatball waits in your bowl. Suddenly, soup night doesn't sound so ordinary.
This week, Dinner RESCUE continues Small Skills, Better Dinners with two full-meal soups built around something people already love: cheesy meatball melts and sweet, smoky street corn.
The Cheesy Comfort Pick: French Onion Meatball Melt Soup
Sixteen small beef meatballs simmer in a broth flavored with slowly softened, golden onions, thyme and a little Dijon. Each person gets four meatballs and a slice of crunchy garlic toast covered in melted Swiss cheese. Dip the toast instead of letting it sink and turn soggy. It's rich, cozy and still unmistakably soup.
The Bold & Creamy Pick: Street-Corn Chicken Chowder with Lime & Tortilla Crunch
This colorful bowl brings lightly browned corn, tender chicken, potatoes and red pepper together with cumin, smoked paprika and milk. A little mashed potato thickens the broth without a flour-heavy sauce. Finish with a squeeze of lime and a handful of tortilla chips just before eating; keep hot sauce optional.
Here's the small skill worth remembering: Choose the soup's texture before you cook. In the meatball soup, whole ingredients need enough savory broth to move around. In the chowder, soft potatoes give the liquid body while chicken and corn keep it interesting.
Both make four dinner portions. And the crisp extras aren't decorations—they're part of the meal. Keep cheese toast and chips separate until serving.
For tomorrow's leftovers, expect either soup to thicken a little in the fridge. Stir in warm broth or water as you reheat, and restore the texture you enjoyed tonight.
So which gets your vote: cheesy-meatball comfort or smoky, crunchy chowder? This is one dinner decision that's actually fun.
➡️ Which soup deserves a spot on your dinner table? See how the two compare, discover the tricks behind their irresistible textures, and get both complete recipes—including cheesy garlic toasts, crunchy toppings and make-ahead tips—in this week's Dinner RESCUE.

🌧️ Rain Postpones Guardians–Rays Game 4; Cleveland's Pennant Chase Resumes Saturday
Cleveland's push toward the World Series will have to wait another day after persistent rain forced the postponement of Friday night's American League Championship Series Game 4 against the Tampa Bay Rays at Progressive Field.
Game 4 is now scheduled for Saturday, October 17, at 8:08 p.m., with Game 5 moving to Sunday at 5:08 p.m., eliminating the originally scheduled day off.
The Guardians maintain a 2–1 series lead following Thursday's thrilling 3–2 victory, highlighted by rookie Petey Halpin's go-ahead two-run homer. Cleveland remains just two victories away from its first World Series appearance since 2016.
Manager Stephen Vogt confirmed that Shawn Armstrong will still start Saturday, with Cleveland expected to rely heavily on its bullpen. Tampa Bay plans to start Nick Martinez.
Important ticket information: Fans holding tickets for Friday's postponed Game 4 can use them for Sunday's Game 5. Those holding tickets for Saturday's originally scheduled Game 5 will attend Saturday's Game 4 instead. No ticket exchange is required.
Saturday's game will air on TBS and truTV, with streaming available on HBO Max.
The rain may have interrupted Cleveland's momentum, but the Guardians still have an opportunity to clinch the American League pennant in front of their home crowd this weekend.
🏈 Lake Catholic Flips the Script With 28–7 Road Win Over Holy Name
The Cougars bounce back from last week's setback with a convincing conference victory ahead of their regular-season finale.
What a difference a week makes for Lake Catholic.
Just seven days after falling to Padua Franciscan 28–7, the Cougars turned the tables Friday night, October 16, defeating Holy Name by that exact same score in a North Coast Conference showdown.
The victory provided a timely response for coach Marty Gibbons' squad, which has now won three of its last four games.
Lake Catholic's defense delivered an especially encouraging performance. Holy Name entered the matchup coming off a 33-point outing against Elyria Catholic, but the Cougars held the Green Wave to just one touchdown.
The win continues a strong late-season stretch that also includes a 35–0 shutout of Elyria Catholic and a 27–13 victory over Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.
Up next: Lake Catholic travels to face longtime rival Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin on Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m., looking to carry that momentum into its regular-season finale.
