📰 Mentor Students Bring Eight Schools Together for Model UN Conference

Mentor High School students welcomed 133 delegates from eight visiting schools for the 10th annual Mentor Model United Nations Crisis Conference, held October 9–10.

The student-run event, known as Mentor MUN X, grew considerably from approximately 90 delegates last year, making it the conference's largest gathering yet.

Mentor students did much more than participate. They organized and operated the conference, serving as committee chairs, co-chairs, monitors and support staff.

This year's event featured an African Union simulation in which delegates assumed the roles of national leaders and government officials. Students worked through an international crisis, negotiated with representatives of other countries and developed resolutions.

It was a hands-on lesson in diplomacy, public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork — skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

Adventure Subaru of Painesville also contributed $1,000 to support the Model UN team and its conference, adding a welcome show of local business support.

With participation growing and students taking responsibility for running a major academic event, Mentor MUN X offered another example of young people stepping forward as leaders in their school community.

🏠 THE REAL ESTATE QUESTION: A Beautiful Renovation Is Only Half the Story

What every homebuyer should ask about the changes they can't see.

A beautifully remodeled kitchen can make you fall in love with a house. A finished basement can make you imagine years of family gatherings.

But here's something worth asking before you start planning where the furniture goes: What's the story behind those improvements?

This week, The Real Estate Question concludes our three-part Seeing Past the Listing series with a closer look at a home's renovation history—and why understanding it can help buyers make more confident decisions.

The finished product is only part of the picture.

Imagine touring a home with an impressive finished basement. The flooring looks new, the lighting is attractive, and everything appears move-in ready.

But when was the work completed? Who did it? Were electrical, plumbing or heating systems changed? And are there records explaining what happened?

These aren't necessarily warning signs. They're reasonable questions about a significant part of the home.

Ask about the work, not just the appearance.

Depending on the project, useful records might include contractor invoices, dated photographs, equipment information, permits or inspection documentation.

Each offers a different piece of the story. An invoice may establish when work was billed. An inspection record may document a particular inspection result. Neither guarantees the improvement's condition today.

What if the paperwork is missing?

Don't automatically assume something is wrong. Older projects may have incomplete records, previous owners may have handled the work, and documentation requirements vary.

Instead, identify what's still unknown. For important changes, your next step might be asking the local building department or consulting a qualified inspector or contractor.

The real estate question: Can the home's significant changes be explained well enough for you to understand what you're buying?

A beautiful renovation deserves admiration. Understanding the work behind it deserves just as much attention.

➡️ What should you ask before trusting a home's renovation history? Our complete guide includes practical renovation examples, where to look for important property records, and an eight-question Home History Checklist you can use before your next home tour. [Read the full guide]

⚾ Guardians Fall 3–1 to Rays, Face Elimination in ALCS

The Cleveland Guardians are one loss away from elimination after falling 3–1 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday night at Progressive Field. Tampa Bay now leads the American League Championship Series 3–2, leaving Cleveland with no room for another defeat.

Rays starter Drew Rasmussen silenced Cleveland's bats, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six over seven innings. Tampa Bay scored in each of the first three innings, building a 3–0 lead the Guardians couldn't overcome.

Steven Kwan provided a bright spot with two hits and outstanding defense, including a throw to the plate that prevented another run. Chase DeLauter drove in Cleveland's lone run with a sixth-inning groundout.

Rookie starter Parker Messick struggled, allowing two runs in just two innings.

What's next: The Guardians head to Tampa Bay for a must-win Game 6 on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. A Cleveland victory would force a decisive Game 7 on Tuesday, keeping the team's World Series hopes alive.

🏈 Browns Stun Ravens 13–10 on Last-Second Field

Cleveland erases 10-point deficit as Szmyt delivers another dramatic victory.

The Cleveland Browns rallied from a 10-point deficit Sunday to defeat the Baltimore Ravens 13–10 on Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal as time expired at Huntington Bank Field.

The victory improved Cleveland to 4–2, creating a three-way tie atop the AFC North with Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

Cleveland’s offense managed just 107 yards through three quarters, but its defense kept the game within reach, shutting out Baltimore after its opening two possessions.

The comeback began when Carson Schwesinger forced a Derrick Henry fumble, recovered by Tyson Campbell. Audric Estimé followed with a 2-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10.

With 1:59 remaining, Deshaun Watson led a 62-yard drive, including a crucial 33-yard completion to Jerry Jeudy. Szmyt’s initial field-goal attempt was blocked, but a Baltimore offside penalty gave him another chance. His 37-yard kick sealed the victory.

Watson finished with 164 passing yards as Cleveland secured another dramatic win.
Cleveland visits the Tennessee Titans next Sunday.
