🎃 Mentor Confirms Halloween Trick-or-Treat Hours for October 31

Halloween is almost here, and Mentor families now have the city's official trick-or-treat schedule.
The City of Mentor has confirmed that neighborhood trick-or-treating will take place Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Mentor Police Department will have additional officers patrolling city neighborhoods throughout Halloween evening.
Police are also sharing several important safety reminders for families heading out:
Stick together: Children should walk with an adult rather than alone.
Make costumes visible: Choose bright, flame-resistant clothing or add reflective tape.
Watch for traffic: Use sidewalks whenever possible and stay alert for vehicles.
Stay familiar: Visit neighborhoods you know.
Avoid costume hazards: Skip masks that block vision or costumes that could cause tripping.
Check the candy: Examine collected treats before eating them.
For residents welcoming trick-or-treaters, the confirmed two-hour window makes it easier to plan for visitors and prepare treats.

📰 Mentor Approves $365,837 in Sidewalk Assessments for 440 Properties

Affected homeowners have 30 days to pay directly before unpaid charges move to property taxes.
Mentor City Council approved approximately $365,837 in sidewalk repair assessments on October 20, affecting 440 properties in sidewalk zones 1D and 1E.
The assessments cover repairs associated with the city's 2023 Sidewalk Repair and Pedestrian Safety Program. Approximately 1,187 concrete sidewalk slabs were replaced through the city's assessment process.
The repairs are already complete. The council's decision establishes how the costs will be collected from affected property owners.
Homeowners have 30 days following council approval to pay their assessment directly to the city. Unpaid balances will be added to property taxes and collected in six semiannual installments over three years.
Lake County's first property tax deadline in 2027 is February 24, but officials have not confirmed whether these sidewalk assessments will appear on that bill.
Individual amounts vary, and not every homeowner in the affected areas owes money.
Residents can contact Mentor's Engineering Department at 440-974-5785 to verify whether their property is included and determine the amount owed.

📆 Church Proposed for Hopkins Road Property in Mentor
A proposal to establish a church on Hopkins Road is heading to the Mentor Municipal Planning Commission for a public hearing next month.
According to a notice published by the city on October 23, Estate Pro LLC is requesting a conditional-use permit for a church at 5733 Hopkins Road. The application involves four parcel identifiers in an R-4 single-family residential zoning district.
The public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Mentor Municipal Center, 8500 Civic Center Boulevard.
The proposal has not been approved. The commission is scheduled to consider whether the requested church use should be permitted at the property.
The city’s notice does not identify the congregation involved or provide details about expected attendance, parking, operating hours or possible construction.
For nearby residents, those details could help explain how the property might be used if the permit is granted.
The November 5 hearing is the next announced step in the review process.

Kingwood Hall Mansfield Ohio
🛣️ Next Stop: Kingwood After the Flowers: An October Garden Worth a Closer Look
At this Mansfield estate, garden paths, distinctive plants and a historic house give a late-season afternoon its own appeal.
Flowers are an easy reason to visit a garden. A handsome view, an intriguing path and a place to linger can be just as persuasive—especially in late October, when the pleasure shifts from spotting the brightest display to noticing how everything fits together.
At Kingwood Center Gardens in Mansfield, start with the Allée, a long view linking Kingwood Hall and the Garden Gateway. Pause where the house becomes the focal point, then notice what frames it. In the Perennial Garden, the progression from a cypress area through the Rainbow Garden toward a meadow offers another way to look: compare upright shapes, spreading plants and open spaces. Any remaining flowers or autumn color are a bonus, not a requirement. kingwoodcenter.org
You don’t need to cover the whole estate. Choose one garden section, stop when something catches your eye and leave time for an indoor visit. Kingwood Hall adds the story of the estate’s former residents; the Display Greenhouse offers a different world of plant forms, including tropicals and succulents. October remains part of the house’s regular visiting season, before its November closure for Christmas preparations.
There is one detail to check on arrival: restoration work in the formal gardens may affect your route. Build the afternoon around open areas rather than a particular pool, fountain or garden room.
For an easy lunch, the on-site Gateway Café serves sandwiches, wraps and salads. Eat before exploring or make it a midway stop; its posted closing time is 3:30 p.m., earlier than the gardens.
If the weather turns damp, shorten the walk and make more of the indoor stops. Save a thorough garden wander for another day.
The goal is a satisfying afternoon: one good walk, a few discoveries and enough unhurried time to enjoy them.
➡️ Open our seasonal Kingwood visit guide to choose your walking plan, fit in lunch and indoor stops, and decide whether the weather calls for a full afternoon or a shorter visit.
