🚨Mentor Mother Sentenced in Child-Endangerment Case
A Mentor mother will not immediately serve jail time after pleading guilty in a case involving two young daughters found outside in dangerously cold weather earlier this year.
Laura Beitler, 36, was sentenced Monday, October 26, in Mentor Municipal Court on two counts of child endangering.
According to Cleveland 19 News, the judge imposed a 180-day jail sentence, suspending 90 days and deferring the remaining 90. Beitler also received a $260 fine. The conditions surrounding the deferred jail time were not detailed in the report.
The case began January 29, when Beitler's daughters, ages 3 and 8, were found outside separate Mentor hotels in eight-degree weather. Both children were evaluated at TriPoint Medical Center and released without reported injuries.
During Monday's sentencing, Beitler told the court she had completed parenting courses and secured stable housing with additional safety measures. Cleveland 19 also reported that she has regained custody of her children and continues working with child services.
➡️ Our full report reconstructs how residents and police found both children, explains the sentencing decision and identifies what remains unanswered about the deferred jail time.
🍫 Wizard of Oz, Minecraft Steal the Show at Mentor Trunk-or-Treat
A little Halloween magic, some Minecraft creativity, and plenty of community spirit made the Mentor Nissan Trunk-or-Treat Block Party a memorable celebration for local families.
Local organizations went all out decorating their trunks, but two displays earned top honors.
Forbes House won Best Decorated Trunk with its Wizard of Oz theme, while Mentor Public Library captured Crowd Favorite with an interactive Minecraft display that won over attendees.
The younger crowd had a chance to shine, too! Three coloring contest winners were recognized: Addie of Chardon (ages 4–6), Catlynn of Willoughby (ages 7–9), and Serenity of Ashtabula (ages 10–12).
Beyond the costumes and candy, the event brought local organizations and neighbors together. For Forbes House, which helps survivors of domestic violence, its winning theme carried an especially meaningful message: "There's No Place Like a Safe Home."
Congratulations to the winners, and a big thank-you to everyone who helped make the celebration a success!
🍂 Mentor Expands Fall Yard Waste Limit

City of Mentor
The City of Mentor’s Yard Waste Program runs from the first full week of April through the second full week of December each year.
From October 26 through December 11, 2025 (Updated), the weekly yard waste collection limit increases from 12 to 25 units to accommodate fall cleanup. Each unit counts as one bag, bundle, or container of yard waste.
To ensure collection:
Each unit must weigh under 35 pounds.
Branches may not exceed three inches in diameter and should be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled.
Only biodegradable paper bags are accepted — no plastic bags.
Reusable containers (up to 32 gallons) are allowed if labeled “YW” and have small drainage holes near the bottom.
Because of the higher seasonal volume, Waste Management will add trucks and staff to maintain service levels. However, pickup times may vary. Residents are asked to set out yard waste the night before collection day to avoid missed pickups.
For full guidelines, visit the Waste Removal and Recycling page or call Public Works at 440-974-5781.

🏠 The Home Front: Build an Appliance File Before You Need a Repair
The model number, warranty paperwork, and service records you need shouldn't be harder to find than the appliance itself.
An appliance repair call can lose momentum before you’ve described the problem. The person scheduling service asks for the model number—and suddenly you’re opening doors, checking drawers, and trying to photograph a faded label.
A simple appliance file can prevent that scramble. It isn't a maintenance calendar or a list of household stuff. It's one place to keep the details a manufacturer, warranty provider, or repair company may request.
Start with the identification label. Look for a manufacturer label listing the full model and serial numbers. These are not interchangeable: the model identifies the appliance type and configuration; the serial number distinguishes your unit. Photograph the entire label, then type both numbers into your file so you can read them without enlarging a photo. Don't move heavy equipment or remove panels to hunt for a label.
Add proof of purchase. Save your receipt or order confirmation, delivery or installation documents, and any written warranty or separate service contract. Record purchase and installation dates if known. Terms vary, so don't assume that a particular repair is covered merely because the appliance seems relatively new.
Keep the right manual. Download it from the manufacturer's official support website using the complete model number on the label. A similar-looking appliance may have different controls, filters, parts, or service instructions.
Record the service history. Note the company, visit date, work performed, parts replaced, and any repair warranty. Attach invoices so the next person handling a problem can see what was done.
Make one file for each major appliance, named by room and appliance—something such as “Kitchen Refrigerator.” Keep it in a shared household folder, with a printed copy if that works better for your home.
Start with the appliance you use most. A few saved details now can make the next repair conversation more focused—and give anyone in the household a clear place to look.
➡️ Ready to put your first appliance file together? Our expanded Home Front guide includes common model-label locations, seven important warranty questions, and a complete one-appliance reference template you can copy and use at home.

🏈 Mentor Earns No. 3 Seed — and a First-Round Bye
Mentor will get an extra week before beginning its postseason run.
The 8–2 Cardinals earned the No. 3 seed in Division I, Region 1, giving them a first-round bye when the OHSAA playoffs begin Friday.
Mentor will return to action Friday, Nov. 6, hosting the winner of No. 6 Strongsville and No. 11 Solon.
A Strongsville victory would set up an intriguing rematch. The Mustangs handed Mentor a 56–30 loss on Oct. 2, one of only two defeats on the Cardinals’ regular-season record.
Mentor enters the playoffs after shutting out Euclid, 31–0, and earning a share of the GCC championship.
➡️ Check out our website: the bye does more than give Mentor a week off — see who stands between the Cardinals and the next round, plus why a Strongsville rematch would carry some extra weight.
🏈 Lake Catholic Opens Playoffs on the Road at Ursuline
Lake Catholic’s postseason begins Friday night with little separating the two teams on paper.
The No. 9 Cougars (6–4) travel to face No. 8 Youngstown Ursuline (6–4) at 7 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the Division III, Region 9 playoffs.
Lake Catholic enters the postseason looking to bounce back from a 35–7 loss to NDCL in its regular-season finale.
Friday’s winner advances to a much different challenge: a regional quarterfinal against top-seeded Willoughby South, which finished the regular season 10–0.
➡️ Check out the website: See where the Cougars sit in the Region 9 bracket, why this 8–9 matchup is so closely seeded, and exactly what awaits Friday night’s winner.
🏐 Mentor Volleyball Opens Tournament Play Tuesday
Mentor volleyball begins its postseason Tuesday, hosting Brunswick at 5 p.m. The Cardinals enter tournament play 14–7 and riding a three-match winning streak, including Thursday’s 3–1 victory over Archbishop Hoban.
Mentor has already swept Brunswick twice this season, but Tuesday’s meeting carries much bigger stakes: the winner moves on, and the loser’s season is over.

If a toilet occasionally starts running for a few seconds even though nobody has flushed it, what is the most likely cause?
🐝 Buzz Fact: A toilet that mysteriously runs by itself is sometimes said to have a “phantom flush.” So apparently, even the ghosts in your house are perfectly comfortable using the bathroom without contributing a dime toward the water bill.
