Why Mentor-on-the-Lake May Give Up Its Own 911 Dispatch Center

Mentor-on-the-Lake is considering turning its police and fire dispatch services over to Lake County. But why change a system the city has operated for years?

The answer goes back to June 2025, when City Council voted 7–0 against adopting a county 911 plan that would eventually require two dispatchers on duty at each local emergency call center around the clock.

Police Chief Forsythe questioned the additional staffing requirement, while Mayor David Eva raised concerns about the projected costs. Contracting with another agency was already being discussed as an alternative.

Does that mean the city's dispatchers can't handle emergencies? Not according to any documented performance finding in the official records reviewed. In fact, the county's 2025 plan listed Mentor-on-the-Lake's center as meeting the applicable 911 rules at that time.

The county plan also projected $512,000 in first-year operating costs for the city's center, although that was an estimate — not verified current spending or the cost of switching.

City Council scheduled a special meeting for Friday, October 30, to revisit the county dispatch proposal. Its outcome had not been independently confirmed as of early Saturday.

⬇️ So what's really driving the change, what would happen when residents call 911, and would taxpayers actually save money? Our full report examines the original council debate, the differences between state and county requirements, and the important questions still unanswered.

Dinner RESCUE - What’s for Dinner Tonight?

Two Dinners You Can Eat With One Hand

Pizza-night comfort or a bacon-ranch favorite—two satisfying choices for an evening that won’t sit still.

Before the first candy wrapper hits the floor, there’s still dinner to think about. Halloween calls for something people actually want to eat—and can pick up between answering the door, finding a missing costume accessory and heading outside.

This week’s Dinner Rescue offers two different ways to make that happen: a warm, baked pizza pocket or a cool, crunchy chicken wrap. Choose whichever fits your evening. There’s no need to make both, and neither requires setting out a lineup of toppings.

This is the choice for the person who would happily declare every Friday pizza night—and see no reason to object on Saturday. Each individual calzone brings together pepperoni, Italian sausage and mozzarella inside a golden crust.

Refrigerated pizza dough keeps the project manageable. You get the pleasure of something coming out of the oven without starting a dough-making project in the middle of an already crowded afternoon.

Serve one per person with a small salad before heading out, or crunchy vegetables alongside if dinner is happening in shifts. Give the hot filling a few minutes to cool before the first bite.

Prefer to leave the oven off? Rotisserie chicken, smoky bacon, cheese and crisp lettuce make this the quicker option. Ranch ties it together, and a soft tortilla keeps everything in one convenient package.

It’s a particularly useful choice when you can do a little preparation early and assemble dinner as people become ready to eat. Keep the components chilled, then roll each serving shortly before it’s needed.

Add apple wedges or baby carrots, tuck a napkin around the bottom and dinner is ready to go. Leave the wrap whole for easier handling; save the picture-perfect cross-section for a night when everyone has a plate.

Which sounds better tonight: pizza tucked into a golden crust or a chicken-bacon-ranch wrap? Get both recipes and choose your handheld dinner.

Lake Catholic's Playoff Comeback Falls Short Against Ursuline, 34–20

Danny Zmorowski scores twice as Cougars erase a 12-point halftime deficit and briefly take the lead.

Lake Catholic's football season ended Friday night in Youngstown, but the Cougars didn't go quietly.

Lake Catholic opened with a 70-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 20-yard scoring pass, to take a 7–0 lead. Ursuline answered and eventually carried a 19–7 advantage into halftime.

Then came a remarkable third-quarter comeback.

A fourth-down defensive stop helped set up senior Danny Zmorowski's first rushing touchdown, a run of approximately three yards that cut the deficit to 19–14.

After the defense forced another punt, the Cougars marched 40 yards, with Zmorowski powering into the end zone again from five yards out.

Lake Catholic led 20–19 with approximately three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

But Ursuline responded, reclaiming the lead 27–20 before adding a late touchdown to secure the 34–20 playoff victory.

The Cougars entered as heavy underdogs, yet their second-half rally made the Fighting Irish work for their advancement.

⬇️ Read our full recap to see how Lake Catholic's defense and Zmorowski's two touchdowns nearly produced a playoff upset—and just how unlikely that comeback was before kickoff.
