📰 Mentor’s Annual Memorial Day Ceremony: Join the Procession and Ceremony on May 27

cityofmentor.com

The city of Mentor invites all residents to join its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27, 2024. Beginning with a solemn procession at 9:30 AM from Memorial Middle School on Mentor Avenue, participants will journey north to the Mentor Municipal Cemetery, where the ceremony will commence at 10:00 AM.

Dr. Todd Arrington, author, historian, and Site Manager of the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, will deliver the keynote address. This continues a historic tradition started by Congressman James A. Garfield, who gave the first Decoration Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868. Decoration Day later became Memorial Day.

The ceremony will feature local city council and administration members, elected officials, and representatives from veterans and civic organizations. The event will be recorded and broadcast on the Mentor Channel and shared on social media for those unable to attend.

The Mentor Municipal Cemetery is at 6881 Hopkins Road.

💥 Yesterday's Morning Commute Disrupted by Semi-Truck, Bus, and Car Collision in Wickliffe on Rt 2 West

A crash involving a semi-truck, a Laketran bus, and a car caused significant delays on State Route 2 West in Wickliffe, Ohio, during Thursday morning's commute. Ohio Department of Transportation cameras captured the incident near the intersection of Lloyd Road and State Route 663 just before 8 a.m. Traffic was funneled into a single lane as the two right lanes remained blocked, creating a substantial slowdown. Despite the approximate 20-minute delay, fortunately, no injuries occurred.

📱 Strict Cellphone Ban Reduces Conflicts and Improves Classroom Focus at Local Schools

Akron Local Schools implemented a strict cellphone ban during the school day, leading to a significant reduction in physical altercations and improved classroom engagement. Students are required to lock their phones away, which initially presented challenges but ultimately created a more focused learning environment. Teachers noticed increased eagerness among students to participate in lessons now that their only option is academic activities. The uniform policy also eased the burden on teachers, ensuring consistent enforcement across classrooms.

Safety was a key motivation for the ban after phones were found to be used for organizing and recording fights. A director of safety and security reported a sharp decrease in physical conflicts since the ban took effect, despite a slight increase in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, Mentor Public Schools have a similar policy that prohibits phones during class but allows them between periods, balancing focus and flexibility. Though some parents have concerns about not reaching their children, educators highlight the policy’s benefits in reducing conflicts and improving academic engagement.

🏀 Cleveland Cavaliers Stun Boston Celtics, Tying Series at 1-1

The Boston Celtics lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers 118-94 in Game 2, tying the series 1-1 and highlighting vulnerabilities in Boston's playoff hopes. Despite strong aspirations, the Celtics face growing pressure after disappointing recent postseason exits. Cleveland's Evan Mobley had a standout performance with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks while Donovan Mitchell had a strong game with 29 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists. Another big factor was Caris Levert off the bench as he had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. This was a big game for the Cavs while Boston’s three-point shooting struggles added to their precarious position. The next game in the series is Saturday night in Cleveland.

🥞 Delicious Discoveries Await at The Spot on Lakeshore

Desserts at The Spot on Lakeshore

At The Spot on Lakeshore, my wife and I discovered not just a delightful breakfast venue but also a place that surpasses expectations. On a quiet weekday morning, we decided to indulge in their Big Breakfast—a hearty offering that includes three eggs, a choice of meat, home fries, and an option between two pancakes or a waffle. Opting for the waffle and pancakes respectively, we were not only impressed by the generous portions but also by the superior taste compared to a recent visit to a more expensive chain restaurant.

The Spot on Lakeshore has become a go to place for us of late, especially for breakfast. Having visited around six times, we’ve consistently enjoyed their offerings. What’s more, The Spot occasionally spices up things with live music, adding a unique charm to the dining experience. Whether it’s for a morning meal, lunch, or dinner, The Spot on Lakeshore consistently proves to be a worthwhile choice for quality dining in a cozy atmosphere.
