💦 Community in Mourning as Euclid Officer Ambushed & Killed in Line of Duty

Officer Jacob Derbin

The local community is mourning the tragic loss of Officer Jacob Derbin of the Euclid Police Department, who was fatally shot in an ambush while responding to a disturbance call on Saturday night. At the young age of 23, and with only nine months of service, Derbin's promising career was cut short. He hailed from a family deeply rooted in public service, with both his father and grandfather serving as police officers.

Governor Mike DeWine has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across Ohio in memory of Officer Derbin. A native of Euclid and a veteran of the Army National Guard, Derbin had completed a tour in the Middle East before joining the police force. His commitment to service extended beyond his country to his community and family.

Tragically, this summer was to be a celebratory time for Derbin as he was set to marry his high school sweetheart in July. His mother expressed profound pride and sorrow, describing her son as a "unique young man" who "protected his family, his country, and his community."

Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer and Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail also expressed their deep condolences, highlighting Derbin's exceptional character and the immense loss felt by the community. The city's grief is especially poignant as the nation enters a week dedicated to remembering fallen officers, making this loss resonate even more deeply.

Residents were advised to avoid Lee Road in Shaker Heights on Sunday afternoon due to a barricade situation related to the recent ambush killing of Euclid Officer Jacob Derbin. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was found dead after a standoff. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now involved, and the situation is still under investigation.

She attributed her success to her quick reaction time with the buzzer, allowing her to answer questions before her competitors.

Reflecting on her journey, Gross expressed immense satisfaction with her performance. “Just making it to Jeopardy! was a once-in-a-lifetime dream that still feels surreal,” she said. “Winning three games is just the icing on the cake.”
