📰 Probation Violation Sends Animal Cruelty Offender Back to Jail

Highland Heights Mugshot
Phil Savelli, a man from Mentor who pleaded guilty in December 2021 to killing his girlfriend’s dog, was back in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas on Wednesday for violating his probation. Judge Michael Shaughnessy sentenced Savelli to 60 days in jail after he left Ohio without permission, according to a spokesperson for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s office.
Background of the Case
Savelli, 37, was originally sentenced on February 23, 2022, to 60 days in jail and three years of probation on three counts of animal cruelty. Additionally, he was prohibited from owning or caring for any companion animals. On February 14, 2024, his motion for early termination of probation was denied.
Details of the Incident
Savelli was arrested by Highland Heights police in 2021 after security footage revealed him submerging his girlfriend’s 10-month-old Yorkshire Terrier, named CoCo, in a water-filled sink and then placing the dog in a freezer multiple times until she died. He later returned the lifeless dog to the bed where his girlfriend discovered her.
Helga Semaj, CoCo’s owner, expressed her distress, asking, “What would motivate a grown man to go out of his way to inflict suffering on a four-pound defenseless puppy?”
During his 2022 sentencing, Savelli did not explain his actions but apologized, stating, “I am sorry for any undue stress and anguish that this has caused. I love you all, I need to do better and I will do better.”
☕ Calico Jack Coffee Roastery: From Cancer Battle to Coffee Brilliance

Calico Jack Coffee Roastery
In 2018, Chris and Charisse Barbian, along with their nephew Austin, stumbled upon a popcorn machine at Goodwill. Little did they know, this find would mark the beginning of a new venture. They modified the machine to reach higher temperatures and started using it to roast coffee, a hobby that provided a welcome distraction for Chris during his chemo and radiation treatments for cancer.
Chris, 54, has triumphed over three Stage 4 cancers—throat, lung, and osteosarcoma—and has been cancer-free since fall 2020. "He found that roasting on our popcorn popper was grounding and could be used as a much-needed distraction from the hard treatments," says Austin. "We started giving the coffee we were roasting on the popcorn machine to our family and friends."
The positive feedback from family and friends encouraged them to turn their hobby into a business. Thus, Calico Jack Coffee Roastery was born.
Growth and Expansion
A family friend soon gifted them a professional coffee roaster, prompting Chris to delve into the science of coffee roasting. This led to the creation of three roast varieties, an online store, and a presence at the Willoughby Farmers Market. Today, Calico Jack offers 12 blends and roasts using beans sourced from various countries. They will soon supply their own shop as well as local favorites CLE Juice Box and several grocery stores.
On June 9, the company is set to open its first storefront, Calico Jack Coffee Roastery, at 8595 Mentor Avenue in Mentor, next to CLE Juice Box. They are taking over the location from Lakeshore Coffee Company, whose operator is stepping away for personal reasons. Lakeshore Coffee Company will continue to operate its Andover, Ohio store.
A Fresh New Look
The new store is getting a makeover to match Calico Jack's black, white, and orange branding, reminiscent of calico cat colors. Plans include extending the deck for more outdoor seating and refreshing the interior space.
What sets Calico Jack apart is that they roast coffee onsite. "The number one reason is the freshness of the coffee," Austin explains. "After the coffee gets roasted, the coffee has to ‘de-gas’ over 24 to 48 hours because the beans are still giving off carbon dioxide from the roasting and cooling process. There is a sweet spot right after de-gassing where the coffee is at peak quality."
By roasting and serving coffee in the same location, Calico Jack ensures their customers always enjoy coffee at its peak freshness and quality. The shop will feature monthly roasts, specialty drinks, smoothies, matcha, and teas. They also plan to offer classes on coffee roasting.

🏀 Celtics Return to Eastern Conference Finals After Defeating Cavaliers
The Boston Celtics are making their way back to the Eastern Conference finals in the 2024 NBA playoffs. They secured their spot by defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-98 in Game 5 of their second-round series on Wednesday night. This marks the Celtics' third consecutive appearance in the Eastern Conference finals and their sixth in the last eight seasons.
Game Highlights
The Celtics took advantage of an undermanned Cavaliers team to clinch the series. Cleveland was without its leading scorer, Donovan Mitchell, for the second straight game due to a calf injury, and Caris LeVert was also absent due to a knee injury. Despite these setbacks, the Cavaliers put up a strong fight, leading during the first half and staying competitive until midway through the fourth quarter.
Boston's Performance: The Celtics shot an impressive 52.5% from the floor and made 19 three-pointers. Jayson Tatum led the team with 25 points. Despite a quieter game from Jaylen Brown, who scored 11 points, Boston had six players in double figures, including Al Horford with 22 points.
Cleveland's Efforts: Evan Mobley led all scorers with 33 points, and Marcus Morris contributed a surprising 25 points off the bench, having not played in Game 4.
The Celtics' victory improves their postseason record to 8-2. As the Eastern Conference's No. 1 seed, they now await the winner of the Knicks vs. Pacers series in the conference finals.

🐕 Pet Boom in Ohio Spurs Growth in Veterinary Clinics
New veterinary clinics are springing up across Ohio as the state faces a growing need for veterinarians, driven by an increase in pet ownership. The COVID-19 pandemic saw a surge in pet adoptions, which has exacerbated the existing national shortage of veterinary professionals and contributed to provider burnout.
Key Statistics
The number of veterinary clinics in the U.S. has increased by 8.4% since 2012, according to the latest data from the Census Bureau.
Ohio added 35 new veterinary clinics over this period.
The U.S. pet population has grown steadily, with approximately 86 million dogs and 66 million cats as of 2022, marking an annual increase of about 2% since 2016.
Currently, two in three U.S. households own a pet, based on data from the American Pet Products Association.
Industry Trends
Despite the recent boom in pet adoptions, the demand for veterinary services began to normalize to pre-pandemic levels in 2023. This trend is expected to continue throughout the current year. However, the gap between the supply of and demand for veterinary services remains significant.
Educational Efforts
Veterinary schools are responding to this demand by increasing class sizes and developing new programs. This expansion aims to address the shortage of veterinarians and meet the needs of a growing pet population.
Demographics
Women represent 64% of veterinarians, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
Ohio's increase in veterinary clinics is a positive step toward addressing the need for more veterinary services, but the industry continues to face challenges in meeting the growing demand for pet care.
