📰 Air Quality Alert Issued for Multiple Northeast Ohio Counties

The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) has issued an Air Quality Advisory for multiple counties in Northeast Ohio, effective through Tuesday. The affected counties include Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit.

According to NOACA, the air quality levels in these areas are deemed unhealthy for sensitive groups. Residents are advised to take precautions to minimize exposure to poor air quality.

To stay healthy during the advisory, consider the following recommendations:

  • Reduce driving by opting for walking, using public transit, or working from home if possible.

  • Avoid idling your vehicle and turn off the engine when stationary.

  • Refill your gas tank after sunset.

  • Postpone mowing your lawn until the advisory is lifted.

🔒🍽️ Mentor’s TGI Fridays Closes Permanently, Confirms City Officials

The TGI Fridays in Mentor has permanently closed, as confirmed by signs, online searches, and city officials. The restaurant had been at its Reynolds Road location since 1994. Economic challenges have led to multiple closures of TGI Fridays nationwide. The city expects the prime location to attract new tenants.

🏞️ New Trails and Bridges: Willoughby's Vision for Riverfront Development

The City of Willoughby, known for its vibrant shops and restaurants, is set to enhance its appeal by expanding its outdoor recreational options. Mayor Bob Fiala announced plans to develop 105 acres of land along the Chagrin River, situated between Todd Field and Daniels Park. This area, previously a nursery and later owned by a private school, was acquired by the city using a mix of federal, state, and local funds.

The city's vision for the new park includes creating trails, installing pavilions for educational purposes, and restoring the natural habitat. Bridges will be constructed over the river at Todd Field and Daniels Park to connect the two miles of trail network. The restoration work, including removing invasive species and creating wetlands, is expected to begin this fall, with full property use anticipated by 2026.

🏘️ Four Easy Steps to Fix a Running Toilet and Improve Flush Power

A running toilet not only wastes water but can also lead to higher water bills. Fortunately, most toilet flush issues can be resolved with a simple four-step strategy. Whether your toilet keeps running, has a weak flush, or the bowl doesn't refill, these steps will help you fix the problem quickly and efficiently. Here's a guide on how to tackle these common issues and ensure your toilet works properly.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Tools: Cutting pliers, pliers, rubber gloves

  • Materials: Replacement fill valve, toilet flapper

Step 1: Check the Fill Tube

The fill tube is a small flexible tube that runs from the fill valve to the toilet overflow tube. If this tube falls off or the water stream misses the overflow tube, the bowl won't refill properly, leading to a weak flush. To fix this, reattach the fill tube securely onto the fill valve, ensuring it is positioned about 1 inch above the rim of the overflow tube. Flush the toilet and observe to ensure the water flows correctly into the overflow tube.

Step 2: Adjust the Fill Height by Checking the Float

The float in your toilet tank controls the water level. If the float is set too low, you get a weak flush; if it's too high, water spills into the overflow tube, causing the toilet to run continuously. To adjust the float, look for the fill level mark inside the tank and ensure the water stops at that mark. Adjust the float up or down as needed, and ensure the water level is at least an inch below the critical level (C-L) mark on the fill valve. If the fill valve doesn't shut off, it may need replacing, which is a quick and straightforward task.

Step 3: Adjust the Flush Handle and Flapper Chain

If the flapper chain is too short or tangled, it won't allow the flapper to close properly, causing water to leak into the bowl and the fill valve to cycle on and off. Conversely, if the chain is too long, the flapper won't open wide enough for a full flush. Adjust the chain to leave a slight bit of slack when the flapper is closed and cut off any excess chain to prevent tangling. Ensure the flush rod doesn’t hit the tank lid when pressed; if it does, bend it slightly and readjust the chain.

Step 4: Replace the Flapper

If the previous steps don’t solve the issue, the flapper is likely worn out. Turn off the water supply, remove the old flapper, and take it to a store to find an exact replacement. Flappers are typically inexpensive and come in various styles. If you can't find an exact match, try a universal flapper. Install the new flapper, ensuring it opens and closes freely. If the toilet still runs, try a different flapper or consider replacing the entire overflow tube and flapper assembly.

By following these steps, you can resolve most common toilet flush problems without the need for a plumber, saving both time and money.
