Kwami Adoboe-Herrara and his wife Margaret

On a recent sunny May morning in a quiet Lake County neighborhood, Kwami Adoboe-Herrera prepared his lawn and garden for summer. Gardening is a therapeutic activity for Adoboe-Herrera, a skill he learned from his sharecropper parents in Togo, a small African country. It helps him cope when he has a lot on his mind.

Adoboe-Herrera's journey from Africa to the Cleveland suburbs has been filled with both joy and unimaginable hardships. At seven, a family friend promised to bring him to the United States for an education. However, that was a lie. Upon arrival in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he was forced into labor trafficking along with three other minors. They were made to perform various tasks, and any mistakes were met with severe punishment.

After six years, a teacher suspected the abuse and contacted the police, leading to Adoboe-Herrera's rescue. His trafficker was sentenced to federal prison and later deported. Now, Adoboe-Herrera is dedicated to helping other survivors. He serves on the board of Stark County-based nonprofit Not For Sale and is a member of the United States Advisory Council on Trafficking.

Ohio reports high rates of human trafficking, with nearly 600 victims identified in 2022. The state’s extensive highway system and poverty issues contribute to this problem. Increased awareness has led to more reporting, but online grooming and trafficking through social media remain significant challenges.

Despite his harrowing experiences, Adoboe-Herrera is grateful to be in the U.S. and is committed to fighting for victims' rights, striving to make the most of his second chance.

💪 Essential Skin Care Tips for Long-Lasting Health

Achieving and maintaining healthy, glowing skin doesn't have to be time-consuming. By focusing on these basic but crucial practices, you can protect your skin and keep it looking its best.

1. Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Your skin needs the sun. However, too much sun exposure is a major cause of skin damage, leading to wrinkles, age spots, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Effective sun protection includes:

  • Using Sunscreen: Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply it generously and reapply every two hours, especially if swimming or sweating.

  • Seeking Shade: Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.

  • Wearing Protective Clothing: Cover your skin with long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats. Consider sun-protective clothing or laundry additives for extra UV protection.

2. Avoid Smoking

Smoking accelerates skin aging and causes wrinkles by narrowing blood vessels, reducing blood flow, and depleting the skin of essential nutrients and oxygen. It also damages collagen and elastin fibers and increases the risk of skin cancer. Quitting smoking can significantly improve your skin's health and appearance.

3. Be Gentle with Your Skin

Daily habits like cleansing and shaving can harm your skin. Follow these tips to minimize damage:

  • Limit Bath Time: Use warm rather than hot water and keep showers short to avoid stripping your skin of natural oils.

  • Choose Mild Soaps: Avoid strong soaps and detergents that can dry out your skin. Use mild cleansers instead.

  • Shave Carefully: Use shaving cream, lotion, or gel, and shave in the direction of hair growth with a clean, sharp razor.

  • Pat Dry: After washing, gently pat your skin dry to retain moisture.

  • Moisturize: Use a moisturizer suited to your skin type. For daily use, consider one with SPF.

4. Eat a Healthy Diet

Your diet affects your skin's appearance and health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can enhance your skin's look and feel. Fish oil supplements and diets low in unhealthy fats and refined carbs may also promote younger-looking skin. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining skin hydration.

5. Manage Stress

Stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne and other skin problems. Managing stress through adequate sleep, setting reasonable limits, reducing to-do lists, and engaging in enjoyable activities can lead to healthier skin and overall well-being.
