📰 Mentor Resident Restores Plaque Honoring Fallen Vietnam Soldier

The military has played a significant role in Bruce Fellows’ life, as has being a lifelong resident of Mentor Headlands. When a plaque honoring a fallen Vietnam soldier from his neighborhood was no longer visible in its original location in a local park, the 66-year-old retiree embarked on a mission to locate and restore it.
Bruce and his wife, Moira, successfully unearthed the plaque dedicated to Dale A. Pearce, buried under the landscaping at Morton Park. The plaque, originally placed by Pearce’s family and community members, was meant to be seen at the base of a flagpole in the park.
Fellows' family had a close connection with the Pearce family. His older brother and cousin used to play with Dale in the woods by the park. Bruce, who has deep military roots with family members who have served in the armed forces, felt a strong personal duty to ensure the plaque was restored.
According to records, Dale Pearce was in a helicopter that was shot down during the Vietnam War. While two crew members were recovered, Pearce was not. The flagpole and plaque were initially dedicated by Pearce’s parents and the Headlands community around 1979 or 1980.
The plaque had become buried over time and the flag was no longer flown on the pole, prompting Fellows to search for it. With assistance from the city of Mentor and AmVets, Bruce dug about 9 to 10 inches into the dirt at the base of the flagpole, eventually uncovering the plaque.
The Headlands community, where Fellows graduated from Mentor High, is known for its close-knit, family-like atmosphere. For Fellows and his wife, restoring the plaque to honor a fallen hero and neighborhood resident was an easy choice.
“We don’t want to see this gone or forgotten,” Fellows stated.
📰 Mentor Honors Fallen Heroes with Memorial Day Parade

CityofMentor.com
Yesterday, the community came together for a solemn Memorial Day parade to honor our fallen heroes. The procession began at Memorial Middle School, moved north to the cemetery, and concluded at the Mentor Memorial Promenade. This year's keynote speaker was author and historian Dr. Todd Arrington, the Site Manager for the James A. Garfield National Historic Site.
Participants, including veterans, local officials, and community members, marched in the parade to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The event featured patriotic displays, flags, and moments of reflection to honor the memories of the fallen.
Thank you to everyone who joined in this important tribute.

⚾ Rockies Snap Guardians’ Nine-Game Streak with 8-6 Win
The Colorado Rockies ended the Cleveland Guardians’ nine-game winning streak with an 8-6 victory on Monday, highlighted by Charlie Blackmon's homer that capped a six-run fourth inning. Blackmon drove in four runs and made a key defensive play, while José Ramírez continued his strong season with two doubles and two RBIs. Despite a strong start by the Guardians, a bases-loaded error and Blackmon's three-run homer turned the game in favor of the Rockies. Josh Rogers earned his first major league win since June 2022, and Jalen Beeks secured the save. Cleveland’s Xzavion Curry got the loss for the Guardians.
Cleveland maintains their 2.5 game lead over Kansas City as the Twins beat KC last night.

🏡 Avoid These 12 Home Improvement Projects to Maintain Property Value
Considering a home renovation project? Choose carefully – here are 12 home improvement projects to avoid if you plan to sell anytime soon.
Home renovation can be a great way to improve your living space, but not every project will increase your home’s resale value. According to Angi's annual State of Home Spending report, the average American household spent $9,542 on home improvement projects in 2023. However, some renovations might even decrease your home's value. Here are 12 common home improvement projects that could potentially lower the value of your home:
Too Much Wallpaper
Wallpaper can be highly personal and difficult to remove. Most buyers prefer walls they can easily repaint.
Built-In Electronics
Gadgets can become outdated quickly, making built-in electronics less appealing to future buyers.
Wall-to-Wall Carpeting
Carpeting can be seen as outdated, especially if it covers hardwood floors. Many buyers prefer hardwood or other easy-to-clean flooring options.
Swimming Pool
Pools can be expensive to maintain and insure, and may not appeal to buyers in cooler climates.
Garage Conversions
Converting a garage into living space can reduce the appeal for buyers who need a place to park their cars.
DIY Projects
Poorly executed DIY projects can detract from your home’s value. Professional work is often preferred.
Bold Colors
Bright or dark colors may not appeal to everyone. Neutral colors are more likely to attract a wide range of buyers.
Adding a Sunroom
Sunrooms are expensive and often not included in the home’s square footage, reducing the return on investment.
Textured Walls and Ceilings
Textured finishes can be difficult and costly to remove, and many buyers prefer smooth surfaces.
Overdone Landscaping
High-maintenance or overly elaborate landscaping can be seen as a burden by potential buyers.
Outdoor Fire Features
Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces may not recoup their installation costs and could be seen as unnecessary.
Landscape Lighting
While aesthetically pleasing, landscape lighting doesn’t significantly increase home value and recoups only a portion of its cost.
How to Decide if a Renovation Is Worth the Cost
Before starting a renovation, consider both its impact on your quality of life and its financial implications. If a renovation significantly enhances your living experience, it might be worth the investment, even if it doesn't add much resale value.
