π° Lake County Seniors Gain Access to Fresh Produce Through New Digital Voucher Program
The Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) offers low-income seniors access to locally grown produce, honey, and herbs. Eligible Lake County residents aged 60 or over with incomes below $27,861 for single households or $37,814 for two-person households can receive a $50 voucher. This voucher is redeemable at participating farmers' markets and roadside stands for Ohio-grown products.
In 2024, the program introduces "Homegrown Benefits," an electronic solution developed in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA). This e-solution aims to streamline processes, extend reach, and ensure program sustainability.
Participants must apply online through the ODA website. Once approved, seniors or their proxies can choose between two benefit redemption methods:
Mobile Benefits: This option requires a smartphone and email. Participants will use the Homegrown Benefits app to redeem their vouchers. Instructions for the app will be emailed within 1-2 weeks after application submission.
Physical Benefit Card: This method does not require a smartphone or email. Participants will receive a physical card loaded with their benefits, which can be used at local farmers' markets. However, this option may take longer due to mailing times.
For more information or assistance with the application, contact the Lake County Council on Aging at (440) 205-8111.
π° Mosquito Spraying, Garage Sales, Grass & Weed Control and More
Mosquito Spraying The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) conducts mosquito spraying in most municipalities within Lake County. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and ensure a more comfortable summer for residents. For scheduled spraying and additional information, contact the hotline at 440-350-2088 or visit lcghd.org.
Garage Sales While a permit is not needed to hold a garage sale, there are restrictions on where signs can be placed. Garage sale signs are allowed only on the property where the sale is happening. They cannot be posted on street corners, tree lawns, or utility poles. City staff may remove illegally posted signs without prior notice.
Grass and Weed Control Residents are required to maintain their lawns and landscaping to avoid negatively impacting the neighborhood. Grass in residential areas must be kept under 8 inches. If grass or weeds grow excessively, the Mentor Code Enforcement Office will issue a notice, giving property owners 48 hours to address the issue. If ignored, the city will take legal action and have the grass cut at the owner's expense. For questions, call 440-974-5740.
Open Burning Burning yard waste is prohibited in the city. Small outdoor fire pits or fireplaces are allowed but must be kept at least 10 feet away from any structure and cannot be used on apartment balconies. Recreational fires with a fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height are permitted without a permit. However, for bonfires exceeding these dimensions, a permit is required. To obtain a bonfire permit, contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at 440-974-5768 at least two business days before the event.
Power Outages Report all power outages directly to FirstEnergy at 888-544-4877. Outages can also be reported online or via text. For more information, visit firstenergycorp.com/outages. Only call 911 for emergencies.

π° Fatal Explosion Rocks Downtown Youngstown: One Dead, Seven Injured
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced an investigation into a deadly natural gas explosion that occurred in downtown Youngstown, Ohio, on Tuesday afternoon. The blast near Central Square resulted in one fatality and seven injuries, with one individual in critical condition.
The explosion, which affected a building housing a Chase bank and apartments, has left the community in shock. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the explosion. Youngstown Fire Chief Barry Finley reported that the blast caused the floor of the bank to collapse into the basement, which subsequently flooded.
The deceased has been identified as Akil Drake, an employee of the bank. His body was recovered from the basement early Wednesday morning. Drake, a graduate of Penn Hills High School and Youngstown State University, was remembered by Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown for his dedication and tragic loss.
Mercy Health is currently treating seven injured individuals, including one in critical condition who remains in intensive care.
The NTSB's pipeline and hazardous materials team arrived in Youngstown on Wednesday to lead the investigation. The Ohio State Fire Marshal is also probing the cause of the explosion. A large perimeter has been established around the site as officials continue their inquiries.
Due to the risk of structural collapse, the affected building and a nearby hotel have been closed, and surrounding streets are indefinitely blocked off to traffic. A Chase spokesperson stated that the company is cooperating with local officials to ensure safety and assess the damage.
