📰 Explore Local Parks with Mentor Library's Headlands Treasures Map

Mentor Public Library is encouraging residents to explore local parks, trails, and nature preserves with its Headlands Treasures Map. The map, available at the library’s Headlands Branch on 4669 Corduroy Road, highlights six natural sites to visit this summer. These include Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve, Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, and trails in the Mentor Marsh.

Participants can pick up a map and check off each park as they visit. While not required, they are also invited to take a sketchbook and draw something interesting at each location. Completed maps should be returned to the Headlands Branch by August 1 to receive a special prize. Additionally, all participants who finish the treasure hunt will be entered into a raffle to win a $25 gift card.

📰 Summer Business Slumps as Construction Disrupts Grand River Valley

The summer season, typically the busiest time of year for businesses in Grand River Valley, has begun with challenges due to ongoing construction at the intersection of State Route 307 and State Route 534. The project, aimed at converting the intersection into a roundabout to enhance safety, has significantly disrupted local businesses that depend on seasonal traffic.

Scheduled to continue until early July, the construction has left many businesses struggling. At Laurello Vineyards, the usual influx of visitors has noticeably dwindled. The vineyard has seen a dramatic decrease in foot traffic, with numbers dropping by up to 40%.

Access to many local wineries has become difficult, particularly for those east of the construction zone. Visitors often get frustrated and turn back, impacting businesses like Laurello Vineyards even more.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) acknowledges the inconvenience but stresses the necessity of the project. According to Justin Chesnic, ODOT District 4 spokesperson, the intersection has been one of the most hazardous in Ashtabula County, with 42 crashes in nine years, half resulting in injuries. The long-term benefits, he asserts, will significantly improve safety. If the project stays on schedule, construction should be completed by July 4.

📰 High School Drama Stars Shine at 2024 Awards Ceremony

The 2024 Drama Awards were presented on May 7 at Perry High School, continuing a tradition started 49 years ago by Robert E. Tischer. The awards recognize the hard work and dedication of high school students involved in drama, both on stage and behind the scenes. This year, Robert's son Bryce and his family contributed $1,000, while the Painesville and Mentor Rotary Clubs collaborated to fund five scholarships.

Gratitude is extended to all the Rotary members who attended the plays and participated in voting for the actors and stage crew. Special recognition goes to Susan Schofield Fratino of the Painesville Rotary and Bruce Wilson of the Mentor Rotary for their significant efforts in organizing the event and supporting the drama programs. The ceremony highlighted the contributions and talents of the students, celebrating their achievements in a memorable evening.
