⚾ Lively Secures Fourth Straight Win as Guardians Top Nationals 3-2
Ben Lively secured his career-best fourth consecutive win, and Kyle Manzardo delivered a key two-run single, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Lively (5-2) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander has excelled at home, boasting a 1.90 ERA in four starts at Progressive Field this season. Since joining the majors in 2017, Lively has played for four different teams and spent three seasons in South Korea.
“I’m just throwing the ball over the plate, and I’ll keep rolling with that,” Lively said. “Stay ready and go with the fastball whenever in doubt.”
The Guardians, who have now won nine straight games at Progressive Field, improved their home record to an MLB-best 20-6 this season. This streak marks Cleveland’s longest home winning run since 2017.
“Tons of people showing up every night, and it gives you a great home field advantage,” said rookie first baseman Kyle Manzardo.
The win was the Guardians' 12th in their last 15 games, solidifying their lead in the AL Central.
Key Moments:
Manzardo's Two-Run Single: In the first inning, with two outs, Manzardo hit a bloop single to left field, scoring José Ramírez and Josh Naylor.
Ramirez’s Heads-Up Play: In the third inning, Ramírez scored from second on a wild pitch, making it 3-0. “When I saw the ball bouncing, my first reaction was to try to get home,” Ramirez explained through a translator.
Additional Highlights:
David Fry extended his on-base streak to 19 games, doubling, walking, and getting hit by a pitch.
Emmanuel Clase secured his 18th save in 21 chances with a perfect ninth inning.
Nationals' Response: The Nationals scored their two runs in the fourth inning, with Joey Meneses and Jesse Winker contributing an RBI groundout and single, respectively.
