🧒 Safety Town's Debut Session Teaches Essential Skills to Kids

Mentor Police Department
The first session of Safety Town concluded yesterday, marking a successful start to this important awareness program. Safety Town is designed to teach young children essential safety skills, providing parents with peace of mind. The program covers a wide range of topics, including fire safety, stranger danger, water safety, and dog safety. Additionally, an outdoor mini-town is set up to teach lessons on pedestrian, traffic, and bike rules. This Wednesday was particularly special, as it was designated Police Day at Safety Town.

📰 Mentor Council Bans Outdoor Smoking Outside Designated Areas
Mentor City Council has enacted an ordinance that may make smoking outside on city property costly unless done in designated areas. The amendment, passed on June 4, prohibits outdoor smoking on city property, except in specified locations. Violators could face fines and possible court costs.
Mentor City Manager Ken Filipiak explained that the ordinance originally lacked a penalty phase, prompting the amendment. The primary concern is the city's amphitheater, which hosts the popular Mentor Rocks series and attracts large crowds. Currently, there is one designated smoking area at the amphitheater, with a second being established. Signs will be posted to guide smokers to these areas and warn of penalties for non-compliance.
The ordinance extends to all forms of smoking, including cigarettes, cigars, vaping, and, eventually, recreational marijuana when state law permits.
Filipiak emphasized that the ordinance aims to ensure everyone can enjoy events without being affected by smoke. Initially, officers may issue warnings, but the ordinance allows for citations, classified as misdemeanors, if necessary.
📰 New Lake County Committee Targets Overdose and Suicide Prevention
The Lake County commissioners have appointed Health Commissioner Ron Graham to form a Drug Overdose Fatality and Suicide Fatality Review Committee. The committee aims to reduce preventable deaths by fostering stakeholder collaboration, analyzing data, and developing prevention strategies. Scheduled to launch in late August or early September, the committee will include members from various local agencies.
📰 Public Hearing Announced on June 18 for Mentor Zoning Changes
The Mentor City Council has scheduled public hearings for June 18, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Mentor Municipal Center, located at 8500 Civic Center Blvd, Mentor, Ohio. The hearings will address proposed zoning changes within the city.
The first proposal involves rezoning approximately 8.16 acres at 6010 Heisley Road from an M-1 Light Manufacturing District to a B-2 General Business District. The second proposal concerns rezoning about 14.5 acres on Adkins Road from an R-4 Single Family Residential District to a PRD Planned Residential Development Overlay District. The specific addresses included in this second proposal are 7260, 7276, 7286, and 7290 Adkins Road.
Both ordinances have been declared emergencies, and if approved, will be submitted to the electorate for final consideration.
Detailed information, including the Mentor Municipal Planning Commission’s rezoning recommendation letters and the proposed ordinances, is available with the Clerk of Council at the Mentor Municipal Center.

⚾ Guardians' Shutout Victory Over Marlins Keeps Lead Intact
The Cleveland Guardians dominated the Miami Marlins on Saturday night, securing a shutout victory with a score of 8-0. The Marlins were held to just four hits throughout the game. Ben Lively earned the win for Cleveland, pitching five solid innings, allowing three hits, and striking out one batter. This victory brings Lively's season record to 6-2.
The Guardians' bullpen was stellar in maintaining the shutout. Sam Hentges pitched a flawless inning, followed by Pedro Avila, who struck out six over three innings to earn the save, his first of the year.
Offensively, the Guardians started strong with a solo home run by José Ramírez in the first inning. They added another run in the third inning with an RBI single from Josh Naylor. The game broke open in the fifth inning with a six-run explosion. Steven Kwan hit a home run, bringing home Daniel Schneemann, followed by a series of hits from Josh Naylor, David Fry, Will Brennan, and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Manzardo.
With this win, the Guardians maintain their three-game lead over the Kansas City Royals, who also won last night, defeating the Seattle Mariners 8-4.
