📰 Historic Charlton Abbott Building Revived for Modern Business Use

The Charlton Abbott

The Charlton Abbott is a historic building in Willoughby, named after the original trading post and early explorer Paul Abbott. This landmark reflects the city’s heritage, highlighting significant figures and events from its past.

Originally known as The Charlton in the 1790s, the trading post was part of what was then Fulton, before the area was renamed Willoughby. Paul Abbott, a key explorer, helped establish the Ohio Delta region, which later became Willoughby. These trading posts were essential for providing food, directions, and goods for business services.

The Charlton Abbott Building itself, a Victorian home built in 1858 by Stephen and Rebecca Warrallo, has its own storied history. It was later sold to Mayor John Jordan, who gave his name to Jordan Drive. Although the Warrallo house has been converted for business use, the historic horse barn at the back of the property, one of the oldest in Lake County, remains preserved.

Recognized for its design by the Willoughby Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce, The Charlton Abbott has recently been acquired by Ken and Lisa Boyd. Situated at 37903 Euclid Ave., the building has undergone a seamless integration of historic restoration and modern technology. The Boyds plan to offer professional services to community-based businesses in Willoughby.

The Charlton Abbott will feature rentable office spaces, conference rooms, and outdoor gardens. Additionally, it will serve as a hub for mail, printing, and shipping services. Ken Boyd envisions The Charlton Abbott as a comprehensive solution for businesses, emphasizing its adaptability to evolving service industries that may not require a fixed location. Beyond business use, the building aims to host pop-up markets and artist nights, reviving its historic role as a community hub for information and networking.

🐫 Camels Take Unplanned Stroll at Cedar Point, Briefly Alarm Guests

Visitors to Cedar Point on Tuesday experienced a wild surprise when two camels from the park's petting zoo took an unexpected stroll. Justin Garcia, who was at the park with his family, captured video footage of the camels outside their enclosure.

The incident occurred when one camel appeared spooked and jumped near some park guests. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the ordeal.

Cedar Point spokesperson Tony Clark commented on the situation, stating, "Last night, the camels decided to take an unplanned stroll just outside their home at The Barnyard. We’re looking into how they made it to the midway."

Garcia, who had just gotten off a ride, recounted the moment: "We were almost trampled by two massive mammals. We put some space in between us and watched the aftermath of what could have been a very dangerous situation."

By Wednesday, the camels were safely back in their enclosure, seen enjoying the shade and some food. The Barnyard, located along Frontier Trail in Cedar Point, houses several farm animals, including cows, sheep, goats, piglets, and donkeys.

🐕 Hydrosols: A Safer Alternative to Essential Oils for Your Pets

Summer is here, and many pet owners are asking whether essential oils are safe for animals. The most accurate answer is that we do not know. The safety of essential oils for animals varies based on each animal's unique internal makeup, including how they metabolize substances, their weight, and their species. Due to the concentrated nature of essential oils, what is considered safe can vary greatly. Before using essential oils or aromatherapy bug-spray on your pets, I urge you to consider herbal-based products or hydrosols from trusted sources instead.

There isn't enough evidence to support the safety and efficacy of essential oils for animals, especially with the potential for interactions with prescription medications. Humans often use excessive amounts of essential oils on their skin or in diffusers, which can be risky for pets. Animals frequently lick their coats, so anything applied topically is likely to be ingested, raising concerns about allergic reactions or more serious health effects.

To keep your pet safe, consider using hydrosols. Hydrosols are water-based products made similarly to essential oils, using plant material to create a plant extract. They are much more diluted and generally pet-friendly. Hydrosols come in spray bottles, can be stored in the fridge for longevity, and can be applied to skin, clothing, fur, or even paws for first aid or anxiety relief.

Although I am not an herbalist and cannot recommend specific herbs, I can suggest hydrosols like lavender for anxiety and insect repellent, chamomile or calendula for skin irritations (applied as a spray or with a cool washcloth), and tea tree for cleaning fur or spraying bed linens. Always avoid the eyes and overuse. If something isn't helping, it is not worth continuing, and you should seek your vet's advice.

Guardians Fall Short Against Reds in 4-2 Loss

The Cleveland Guardians fell to the Cincinnati Reds in a 4-2 defeat last night. Despite solid performances from Steven Kwan and José Ramírez, each contributing two hits, the Guardians managed only singles in six out of their seven hits. Cleveland's scoring came in the 3rd and 5th innings, with Kwan crossing the plate on a bases-loaded walk and Ramírez scoring on an Andrés Giménez ground out. Starter Tanner Bibee took the loss, bringing his record to 4-2, after allowing four runs on four hits over 5.1 innings, including two home runs, despite striking out 11 batters. The bullpen performed admirably in relief. For Cincinnati, Nick Lodolo earned the win, improving to 7-2, while Alexis Díaz secured the save. As of the time I’m writing this, Cleveland remains five games ahead in the division, with Kansas City trailing significantly against New York.
