🧊 First Energy Prepares for Heatwave, Shares Tips to Stay Cool
First Energy is taking proactive measures to ensure that any localized power outages caused by the upcoming heatwave are promptly managed. The power company is reviewing staffing levels and operational procedures in preparation for the extreme heat and humidity forecasted for next week.
From western Ohio to the New Jersey shore, First Energy assures customers that its electric system is designed and maintained to operate safely and efficiently, even under severe weather conditions. The company is prepared for the anticipated increase in electricity usage due to the heatwave.
First Energy also provided several tips for customers to stay cool and manage energy use during this period of high demand:
Check your air filter: Dirty filters force your cooling system to work harder, using more energy.
Block sunlight: Draw blinds, shades, or drapes to block sunlight during the hottest part of the day, especially on south- and west-facing windows.
Set fans counterclockwise: This creates a downdraft that pushes cool air down. Turn fans off when you leave the room, as they cool people, not rooms.
Seal openings: Caulk, weatherstrip, or seal openings or cracks around doors and windows to prevent cool air from escaping.
Limit use of heat-producing appliances: Avoid using appliances that generate heat during the hottest times of the day, as this makes your AC work harder.

🚑 Willoughby Hills Firefighter's Heroic Actions Halt Ambulance Theft
On Sunday morning, a Willoughby Hills Fire Rescue ambulance was stolen from University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center. The ambulance had arrived around 10:30 a.m. to exchange a used drug box when the theft occurred on the emergency ambulance ramp.
As the crew exited the hospital, they noticed a man entering the passenger side of the ambulance before sliding over to the driver’s seat and driving away. Firefighter and paramedic Brian Paladino quickly reacted, jumping through the open driver’s side window and taking control of the situation. Paladino managed to wrest the steering wheel from the thief, causing the ambulance to jump a curb and crash into the helicopter landing pad.
Paladino, with the help of his partner and hospital staff, restrained the man until the Willoughby Hills Police Department arrived and took him into custody. Paladino sustained minor injuries to his ankle and arm, while the ambulance suffered moderate damage. The suspect, who was not a patient at the hospital, was unharmed, and the hospital building sustained no damage.
The Willoughby Hills Fire Rescue emphasized that such incidents are rare but highlighted the need to evaluate security measures for unattended ambulances. Fire Chief Robert J. Gandee praised Paladino’s quick and heroic actions, noting that they prevented a potentially disastrous outcome.

📉 Current Trends and Strategies for Navigating Mortgage Rates in June 2024
Mortgage Rate Forecast for June 17-21
Mortgage interest rates decreased for the second consecutive week, with the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) falling from 6.99% on June 6 to 6.95% on June 13, according to Freddie Mac. This decline is attributed to incoming data indicating that the economy is cooling to a more sustainable growth level.
Mortgage rates have fluctuated significantly throughout 2023, driven by the Federal Reserve's actions to combat inflation and uncertainty in the banking sector following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Despite potential economic recession, experts believe rates may gradually descend in 2024. The Mortgage Bankers Association and National Association of Realtors predict that the average 30-year fixed interest rate could settle at around 6.68% by the second quarter of 2024.
As of June 13, the average 30-year fixed rate is at 6.95%, and the 15-year fixed rate dropped from 6.29% to 6.17%. Historically, these rates are still below the long-term average of 7.8% dating back to 1971. Borrowers with strong credit can still find favorable rates, emphasizing the importance of shopping around for the best lender.
Mortgage rates remain volatile, influenced by the Federal Reserve's ongoing policies and the broader economic environment. The central bank has held off on rate hikes in recent meetings, with potential cuts projected as early as July. Homebuyers should be prepared to act quickly, get pre-approved for mortgages, and work with real estate agents who have access to upcoming listings. Shopping around for mortgage rates from multiple lenders is crucial to secure the best deal.
Different mortgage loans cater to various financial situations and goals. Jumbo loans are suitable for high-priced homes, VA loans offer benefits for veterans, and conforming and FHA loans are excellent low-down-payment options. USDA loans provide below-market rates for rural areas. Each type has specific eligibility criteria, making it essential to choose the right loan for your needs.

⚾ Late Rally Not Enough as Guardians Lose to Blue Jays 7-6
The Guardians struggled with runners on base for the second consecutive game, while the Blue Jays capitalized on their opportunities, leading to a 7-6 loss for Cleveland at Rogers Centre on Father's Day.
Toronto's offense surged in the fifth inning, drawing four walks and scoring five runs, highlighted by Daulton Varsho’s grand slam off reliever Nick Sandlin. This put the Blue Jays ahead, ultimately sealing Cleveland’s defeat despite a late rally.
In the ninth inning, Brayan Rocchio hit a two-run homer off Yimi Garcia, narrowing the gap to one run. Garcia then allowed hits to Steven Kwan and Tyler Freeman, placing runners on the corners with two outs before leaving the game due to injury. Nate Pearson relieved him and secured the win by inducing a lineout from Andrés Giménez, thanks to a running catch by Kevin Kiermaier in center field.
The Guardians ended their 10-day road trip with a 4-4 record, losing a series in Toronto for the first time since 2021. This loss also broke their 10-game Father's Day winning streak dating back to 2013.
Cleveland’s starter Ben Lively struggled in the fifth inning, walking the first two batters and allowing four earned runs on six hits. His outing, the shortest of the season, snapped his five-game winning streak. Sandlin, who relieved Lively, gave up a key hit to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before Varsho's grand slam.
