📷 Lawmakers Push for Surveillance Cameras at Ohio Rest Stops to Enhance Safety

Ohio lawmakers are pushing for the installation of surveillance cameras at rest stops to prevent violence, save lives, and combat human trafficking. This follows the 2018 death of Scott Reichard at an I-77 rest stop and other violent incidents. Supporters believe cameras could deter crime and provide crucial evidence. HB473, introduced in April, is gaining traction with multiple hearings and growing support.

🕵️ Unsolved Mystery: The Tragic 1905 Mentor Train Derailment
In 1905, a tragic train derailment occurred in Mentor, Ohio, marking one of the area's most notable yet lesser-known historical events. Many are familiar with the infamous Ashtabula train wreck of 1876, but the Mentor derailment, which took place on the same Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway line, has largely faded from memory.
The incident happened on June 21, 1905, at around 9:20 p.m., involving the 20th Century Limited express passenger train, renowned as the fastest long-distance train in the world at the time. As it sped eastward at 70 miles per hour through Mentor, it was unexpectedly diverted from the main line into the freight station. Despite the emergency application of brakes, the train derailed, and the locomotive, tender, and several cars toppled over. The crash caused the engine’s boiler to explode, igniting a fire that rapidly consumed the wooden cars.
Locals rushed to the scene but were unable to combat the intense flames. The fire department eventually controlled the blaze after five hours. The disaster resulted in 21 deaths, including the train's engineer, and numerous injuries.
The cause of the derailment remains a mystery. It was widely suspected that the switch had been tampered with, but no one was ever identified or charged. D. C. Noon, the assistant general superintendent, suggested that the switch had been maliciously locked open, possibly by an unknown individual with harmful intent. This theory was supported by the conductor of another east-bound train that had safely passed through the switch 45 minutes earlier. Additionally, the switch was found to be undamaged and functional after the crash.
Despite an extensive investigation, no perpetrator was found, and the train wreck remains one of Mentor's greatest unsolved crimes. Over the years, the freight station was rebuilt, and the passenger depot still stands, now serving as a restaurant and bar. The historic Mentor station, located at 8455 Station Street, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern RR Depot and Freight House.

⚾ Guardians Score Seven in Rare 70-Pitch Frame Against Blue Jays
The Cleveland Guardians broke away from the norm in their 7-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night at Progressive Field. In a game defined by an unprecedented second inning, the Guardians scored seven runs, forcing Toronto’s pitchers to throw 70 pitches— the most seen in a single inning by the team since at least 2000. This rare occurrence marks only the tenth time a Major League team has faced such a barrage in this millennium.
During that action-packed inning, thirteen batters took the plate, resulting in seven runs from five walks, four hits, one Toronto error, and one stolen base. Despite the multitude of events, the Guardians achieved this feat with just one extra-base hit. This inning also saw Cleveland draw five walks for the first time since August 6, 2020, against Cincinnati.
The scoring began with Johnathan Rodriguez earning a walk with the bases loaded. Following this, Austin Hedges hit a two-run single, Steven Kwan reached on a fielder’s choice, José Ramírez singled to right, and Josh Naylor added an infield single. Naylor’s leadoff double in left-center was the sole extra-base hit of the inning.
Remarkably, no runs were scored via home runs. This was the first instance of Cleveland scoring at least seven runs in an inning without a homer since a game against the Reds on August 13, 2018.
Cleveland is now up on the Kansas City Royals by 7 games as the Royals lost last night to the Texas Rangers 6-2.
