🚶‍♀️Study Finds Walking Can Significantly Reduce Back Pain

Photo by Arek Adeoye on Unsplash

If you're suffering from back pain, scientists suggest you might find relief by simply walking it off. A recent study conducted by Macquarie University's Spinal Pain Research Group in Sydney has found that walking can have a profound impact on managing back pain. The study, published in the Lancet medical journal, is known as the WalkBack trial and followed 701 adults affected by lower back pain over a period of one to three years.

Participants were divided into two groups: one group followed a walking program led by a physiotherapist, which included six education sessions on back pain prevention, while the other group received no intervention. The results showed that those in the walking program experienced pain-free periods nearly twice as long as those in the control group. Specifically, the intervention group had fewer occurrences of activity-limiting pain and a longer average period before pain recurred, with a median of 208 days compared to 112 days in the control group.

Back pain is a common issue, affecting 39% of U.S. adults in 2019 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Today, nearly 65 million Americans experience back pain, with 16 million suffering from chronic back pain. The condition not only impacts quality of life but also has significant financial implications. Lower back pain is the sixth most costly condition in the U.S., resulting in an annual $12 billion burden.

Professor Mark Hancock of Macquarie University suggests that walking's benefits likely stem from gentle movements, loading and strengthening of spinal structures and muscles, relaxation, stress relief, and the release of endorphins. Lead study author Dr. Natasha Pocovi highlighted that walking improved participants' quality of life, reduced the need for healthcare support, and cut the amount of time taken off work by about half. Unlike other exercise-based interventions for back pain, walking is more accessible and can be implemented on a larger scale.

Guardians Beat Orioles 10-8, Extend Winning Streak to Seven

José Ramírez powered the Cleveland Guardians to their seventh straight victory with a three-run homer in the fourth inning, securing a 10-8 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Despite home runs from Gunnar Henderson, James McCann, Colton Cowser, and Anthony Santander, the Orioles suffered their fifth consecutive loss, highlighting the impact of their pitching injuries.

Ramírez's home run, his 21st of the season, came during a five-run fourth inning that gave the Guardians an 8-4 lead. This homer also moved Ramírez into third place on Cleveland's all-time career home run list with 237. The Guardians utilized five relief pitchers after starter Logan Allen was pulled in the fourth inning, with Pedro Avila (2-1) securing the win with two hitless innings. Emmanuel Clase closed the game, earning his 25th save in 28 chances.

The Orioles' pitcher Cole Irvin (6-4) allowed eight runs and ten hits in four innings, although only four of the runs were earned. Baltimore's defense struggled in the fourth inning, leading to several costly mistakes. An error by catcher James McCann, followed by a series of singles, allowed the Guardians to take control of the game.

David Fry initially put Cleveland on the board with an RBI double in the first inning, but Henderson quickly responded with a two-run homer. Gabriel Arias contributed a two-run double in the second inning, putting the Guardians back in the lead. Although McCann tied the game with an RBI single, the Orioles couldn't maintain their momentum.

McCann and Cowser hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to close the gap to 8-6. However, McCann's lack of speed proved costly twice, as he was thrown out at home in the second inning and hit into a double play in the seventh, which reduced the Orioles' scoring chances.

Cleveland responded to Baltimore's rally with additional runs in the eighth inning. Bo Naylor's RBI triple and Arias' RBI single extended the Guardians' lead to 10-7. Santander's solo home run in the eighth, his 12th of June, tied a franchise record but wasn't enough to overcome Cleveland's lead.
