📈 Mentor's Unemployment Rate Rises to 3.8% in May

City of Mentor
In May 2024, the City of Mentor experienced a 0.4% increase in its unemployment rate, reaching 3.8%. This marks an increase from the 3.0% rate recorded one year ago. Lake County also saw a rise in unemployment, with a 0.2% increase bringing the rate to 3.9% compared to 3.3% the previous year.
Despite the rise, Mentor and Lakewood continue to boast the lowest unemployment rates among Ohio cities with populations over 50,000, both standing at 3.8%. Following closely, Parma has an unemployment rate of 4.2%, while Cuyahoga Falls and Kettering both have rates of 4.3%. Cleveland Heights reports a 4.4% unemployment rate.
The City's civilian labor force remained steady at 26,600 individuals. Statewide, Ohio's unemployment rate climbed 0.4% to 4.6% in May 2024, a significant increase from the 3.3% rate reported in May 2023.
These figures were sourced from the May 2024 Civilian Labor Force Estimates by the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, Office of Workforce Development, and Bureau of Labor Market Information.

📰 FK Agronomics Utilizes Drones for Efficient Herbicide Application in Mentor Marsh

In Mentor, Ohio, an aggressive campaign against invasive species at the Mentor Marsh has taken to the skies with the help of FK Agronomics and its advanced drones. The Ohio-based company uses large drones to spray aquatic-grade herbicide, targeting invasive cattails that have overrun the state nature preserve.
In just two mornings, these drones covered 180 acres, a task that would have taken two weeks to complete from the ground. FK Agronomics, led by owner Fred Kungl, utilizes these drones across the state for various tasks traditionally done by crop-dusting airplanes or helicopters. The drones, significantly larger than recreational ones, are used to spray fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and even plant cover crops over vast farmland areas.
Kungl described the operation as similar to a NASCAR pit crew, with quick battery changes and refills allowing the drone to operate efficiently. Each flight lasts about six minutes, with the drone autonomously flying in straight lines, covering up to 35 feet wide swathes.
The mission at Mentor Marsh is crucial, as the area has been battling ecological damage since 1966 when waste salt was dumped into Blackbrook Creek, devastating native plants and animals. The drones' precision, aided by GPS technology, ensures they avoid sensitive areas like turtle ponds and adjust to weather conditions for optimal spraying.
The agricultural drone industry is experiencing exponential growth, with drones offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional crop-dusting planes. These drones are particularly well-suited to Ohio's smaller fields, providing an efficient solution for areas that are hard to reach with larger aircraft.
David Kriska, a restoration ecologist with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, noted that the use of drones has significantly enhanced the restoration of Mentor Marsh. The drones, used for the third consecutive season, allow for cost-effective and precise application of herbicides, promoting the recovery of the natural habitat.
The herbicide mix used by FK Agronomics is 93% water, 5% herbicide, and 2% citrus solution, which helps the herbicide penetrate plant pores and reach the roots. This process begins to show results within a week, aiding in the ongoing battle to restore the Mentor Marsh.
📰 Understanding the City’s Political Yard Sign Regulations

City of Mentor
With election season approaching, the City outlines rules for political yard signs. One ground sign is allowed per yard year-round, with additional signs permitted during elections. Signs must be under 15 square feet, not illuminated, and placed at least 15 feet from side lot lines. No signs are allowed in public rights of way. Content is protected under free speech, and theft or damage to signs is punishable. Contact the Code Enforcement Department for more information or to report violations.

🚅 Ohio Congress Pushes for Akron-Canton Stop in New Rail Plans

Ohio Congresspersons have called on ODOT to include an Akron-Canton-area station in its passenger rail development plans, emphasizing the regional benefits of improved connectivity. The Akron-Canton Advocacy Alliance supports this, citing the area's significant population and economic assets. Despite historical challenges and the decline of rail infrastructure, proposals include establishing a foundational rail "triangle" or a transformative "star" approach to connect major cities efficiently. Both Amtrak and Brightline show interest in Ohio's rail future, though development will be gradual.

🐕🦺Finding Your Perfect Pet: Why It’s Not Always Love at First Sight

Potential pet adopters often hope for love at first sight, but experienced shelter staff suggest a different approach—seeing the potential in each animal first.
At the Trumbull County Dog Pound in Warren, dedicated volunteers and staff work tirelessly to care for the many dogs in need of homes. Despite the kennel's limited capacity—14 indoor kennels and 8 outdoor spaces—the facility is often filled to capacity due to the influx of abandoned dogs.
Fortunately, a new facility is in the planning stages, with groundbreaking scheduled for this fall. The new site, funded by donations, will be located next to the Animal Welfare League, providing more space and better conditions for the dogs.
Tiffany Pasco, a volunteer with Voices of The Trumbull Pound Dogs, explains the challenges dogs face in the current cramped and noisy environment, which can cause stress and make them appear less adoptable. Volunteers walk, exercise, and provide enrichment for the dogs daily to alleviate this stress and help showcase their true potential.
Pasco highlights the story of Paige, a two-year-old pit bull mix who is a perfect example of a dog that has thrived in a foster home. Well-trained and friendly, Paige enjoys hikes and Netflix nights alike, but she's not a fan of cats. Pasco believes Paige would be a great fit for any family, particularly a young active couple or an older couple seeking companionship.
Pasco emphasizes that many dogs undergo a dramatic transformation when given the chance to relax in a home environment. Fostering not only helps individual dogs decompress but also frees up space at the shelter for more dogs in need. Pasco herself was initially hesitant about fostering but now sees it as a vital way to save lives and rehabilitate dogs.
Adoption counselors at the Trumbull County Dog Pound work hard to match potential adopters with the right pet. They encourage adopters to consider the initial stress shelter animals might exhibit and to trust the staff's knowledge of each dog's personality.
The Trumbull Dog Pound also needs donations of food and supplies to continue its operations. Those interested in adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating can find more information on the Pound's website.

⚾ Orioles Halt Guardians’ Streak with 4-2 Victory
The Baltimore Orioles ended the Cleveland Guardians’ winning streak by defeating them 4-2 in the series finale. The loss prevented the Guardians from sweeping one of baseball's best teams. Here are three key takeaways from Cleveland’s defeat.
Carlos Carrasco’s Start:
Carlos Carrasco had a decent outing against the formidable Orioles lineup. Despite facing a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the first inning, Carrasco managed to escape without giving up any runs. Gunnar Henderson was responsible for the only damage against Carrasco, hitting an RBI single in the second inning and a solo home run in the fifth. Carrasco pitched five innings in total, allowing just those two runs and striking out three.
Two Solo Home Runs for the Guardians:
Cleveland’s offense was less potent compared to their performance on Tuesday night, managing only two runs through solo home runs. These homers, however, were noteworthy. Jhonkensy Noel hit a home run over the center field fence for his first big league hit in his debut at-bat. Gabriel Arias, currently on a four-game hitting streak, provided the second home run. Although inconsistent this season, Arias is showing promise at the plate. The Guardians demonstrated their ability to hit home runs from any spot in the lineup, even in a loss.
Austin Hedges’ Defense:
Austin Hedges, who doesn’t play every day, showcased his exceptional defensive skills against the Orioles. In the fourth inning, Hedges threw out Cedric Mullins, who ranks high in sprint speed, as he attempted to steal second base. Later, Jorge Mateo also tried to steal second after a line drive but was caught by Hedges, marking his second runner thrown out of the game. This performance reminded everyone that Hedges is more than just a morale booster for the team; he is a defensive asset.
