📰 Ohio Faces Rising Lyme Disease Cases as Tick Season Begins

With summer and tick season in full swing, Ohio is seeing a rise in Lyme disease, a relatively new concern for the state. Dr. Amy Edwards from University Hospitals highlights the importance of awareness and early treatment to prevent severe symptoms. The Ohio Department of Health’s "Be Tick Smart" campaign provides tips on prevention and tracking Lyme disease cases. Eastlake resident Chris Petrow's recent Lyme disease diagnosis underscores the need for vigilance, especially in wooded and grassy areas.

While walking his dog Allie in the MetroParks, he noticed a small bump on his arm that grew into a bullseye-shaped rash. After visiting urgent care and the emergency room, he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and began antibiotic treatment. Thanks to his prompt action, he avoided severe symptoms.

Dr. Edwards recommend wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants to make ticks easier to spot. She also advises using repellents containing DEET for protection against ticks and other biting insects.

Ticks are primarily found in wooded areas and tall grass. While suburban lawns pose less risk, outdoor activities in parks, trails, and hunting areas require extra caution to avoid tick bites.

📰 Rite Aid to Close 16 More Ohio Stores Amid Bankruptcy Process

Rite Aid is closing 30 more stores, including 16 in Ohio, as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. This follows several previous rounds of closures. The restructuring plan, recently approved by a U.S. bankruptcy judge, aims to reduce the company's debt and leave about 1,300 stores open nationwide.

This latest list includes stores in Westlake, Shaker Heights, Painesville, Tallmadge, and Canton.

The closures are part of Rite Aid’s restructuring plan, which a U.S. bankruptcy judge approved on June 28. This plan aims to cut $2 billion in debt and transfer control of the company to a group of its lenders. After these closures, Rite Aid will have approximately 1,300 stores remaining nationwide. Currently, there are 142 Rite Aid stores still open in Ohio.

💪 Simplify Healthy Eating: Focus on Whole Foods and Positive Habits

Photo by Ella Olsson on Unsplash

When someone says, "Eat a healthy diet," it can mean different things to different people. For followers of the ketogenic diet, it means avoiding sweet potatoes and quinoa in favor of cheese and coconut oil. Others might avoid sugary foods like ice cream and candy, while some shun dairy and gluten entirely. This back-and-forth can be confusing and lead people to try unsustainable diets in the name of health. However, healthy eating is simpler than it seems.

What Constitutes Healthy Eating?

A healthy diet focuses on whole foods, meaning eating foods as close to their original form as possible. Processed or refined foods lose most of their fiber, vitamins, and minerals, often replaced by preservatives. A plant-based eating pattern is recommended, as studies show it lowers the risk of chronic diseases. Plant-based diets include vegan, raw vegan, vegetarian, or flexitarian options.

It's also crucial to have a positive relationship with food. Rather than focusing on restrictions, think about what nutritious foods you can add to your plate, such as nuts for healthy fats or raspberries for fiber and antioxidants.

Benefits of Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is essential for a long and well-lived life. Poor nutrition, along with smoking, lack of exercise, and excessive alcohol use, are top causes of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Moreover, food choices also impact mental health, potentially lowering the risk of disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Maintaining a healthy weight through mindful eating and portion control is another benefit. Being overweight is associated with increased health risks, but a balanced diet can help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Tips for Adopting Healthy Eating Habits

  1. Make a Plan: Start with small, concrete steps, like opting for whole-grain toast with peanut butter for breakfast instead of a fast-food sandwich.

  2. Bring Your Lunch: Packing lunch from home saves money and is likely more nutritious.

  3. Purge Unhealthy Foods: Keep only healthy foods in your pantry and fridge to reduce the temptation of junk food.

  4. Set Small Goals: For example, aim to add an extra serving of vegetables to dinner three nights a week.

  5. Start a Food Journal: Track your eating habits to understand the reasons behind your food choices.

Establishing Healthy Eating Habits in Children

Modeling healthy eating habits yourself is effective for encouraging children to eat well. Get them involved in food shopping and preparation, make healthy foods accessible, and prioritize family dinners, which generally lead to healthier diets.

Healthy Foods to Incorporate Daily

  • Fruits: Berries, bananas, citrus, mango, kiwi, apples, melons.

  • Vegetables: Leafy greens, peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, squash.

  • Legumes: Beans, lentils, dried peas, hummus.

  • Whole Grains: Brown rice, wild rice, whole-grain bread, quinoa, amaranth, millet, bulgur.

  • Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, pistachios, cashews, walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseed, hemp, sunflower, pumpkin seeds.

Balanced Diets to Consider

Balanced diets like the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND diets, or a vegetarian diet, are more sustainable than trendy diets with many restrictions.

Final Thoughts on Healthy Eating

Eating a variety of plant foods, such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, helps protect against chronic diseases. Avoiding fad diets and focusing on nutrient-rich foods supports overall health and well-being.
