📰 Tragic Lake Erie Incident: One Dead, One Missing After Boat Capsizes

In Perry, Ohio, three individuals were rescued from Lake Erie after their boat capsized on Saturday, but one of them later died. Authorities continue to search for a fourth person who was reportedly on the boat but remains missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard station in Buffalo, New York, received a "mayday" call around 10:30 a.m. from a Painesville radio tower. A helicopter crew from the Detroit Coast Guard and a boat crew from the Cleveland Harbor Coast Guard began the search. The helicopter crew was initially diverted to another rescue in Ashtabula but later returned to assist.

Around 2 p.m., local firefighters found coolers and debris floating 1 to 2 nautical miles from the Perry Nuclear Power Plant. The 23-foot boat was discovered capsized and partially submerged. Divers from the Lake County Sheriff's Office inspected the vessel, but the cause of the capsizing remains unknown.

Cleveland Harbor rescuers found an unresponsive man, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The returning helicopter crew located one person in the water wearing a life jacket, who was responsive. Another responsive individual, also wearing a life jacket, was rescued by the fire department's boat crew. Both survivors, a man and a woman, remained responsive as of Saturday evening.

Authorities have yet to find the fourth person, whose status and whether they were wearing a life jacket are unknown. A Fairport Harbor Coast Guard crew, along with the Detroit air crew and local firefighters, continued the search. The Cleveland Harbor crew was released due to fatigue, and a new Detroit air crew took over the search.

This incident was one of several water rescues on Lake Erie that day. Earlier, two individuals were rescued after their boat capsized near Sheffield Lake. Additionally, the Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued five people near Ashtabula after their boat was swamped by a wave.

Lake County Approves New Local Government Funding Formula

Lake County has approved a new funding formula for local governments, set to take effect next year. The formula, replacing one from 1982, reallocates funds based on current population distributions, increasing funding for eastern townships and decreasing it for western areas and park districts. The updated formula ensures more equitable distribution and has garnered support from most local officials, despite some concerns about flat funding for certain communities.

How to Travel on a Budget: Our 9 Best Tips (Last 4 in the Link)

Exploring new destinations doesn’t have to break the bank. With some smart planning and a few insider tricks, you can enjoy a memorable vacation without spending a fortune. Here are nine budget-friendly travel tips:

1. Come Up with a Plan

While spontaneous travel can be exciting, it’s often more expensive. Plan your trip in advance to avoid last-minute costs. Map out your route and have a rough idea of how long you’ll stay in each place. This minimizes unexpected expenses on flights and accommodations.

2. Travel Out of Season

Avoid peak travel times like school holidays when prices soar. Instead, travel during the ‘shoulder season’—just before or after the peak period. You’ll enjoy fewer crowds, lower prices, and still have a great experience.

3. Be Accommodation-Savvy

Save on lodging by staying in hostels, which offer affordable dorm rooms and a chance to meet fellow travelers. Alternatively, use platforms like Airbnb and Couchsurfing to book affordable stays in locals’ homes. Staying with family or friends is another great way to cut costs and explore new places.

4. Pack Properly

Bring all essentials to avoid shopping on your trip. Pack versatile clothing, including jeans, a hoodie, and a waterproof jacket, to be prepared for any weather. For packing tips, refer to our ‘Travel Like a Pro’ guide.

5. Book Flights in Advance

Secure your flights early, especially return tickets. Airlines release seats up to a year in advance, and prices typically rise closer to the departure date. Booking early helps you get the best rates.

Traveling on a budget is possible with careful planning and smart choices. By considering alternative accommodations, booking flights early, using public transport, and finding ways to earn while traveling, you can enjoy a fulfilling vacation without spending a lot.

Guardians Edge Giants in Thrilling 5-4 Contest at Progressive Field

The AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians edged out the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Saturday, with major league batting leader Steven Kwan hitting a solo home run and scoring twice. Jhonkensy Noel also homered, driving in two runs to help secure the win. This victory improved the Guardians' impressive home record to 29-11, pushing them past Baltimore into first place in the AL.

Kwan, slated to start in the outfield at the All-Star Game, went 2 for 4, boosting his average to .365 and extending his interleague hitting streak to 11 games. Noel's third home run in eight games since his major league debut on June 26 came in the sixth inning off Luke Jackson, extending Cleveland's lead.

Reliever Pedro Avila earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of one-run relief, and Emmanuel Clase notched his AL-high 26th save despite a ninth-inning walk. Logan Allen, the Guardians' starting left-hander, struck out a season-high nine over 4 1/3 innings, yielding two runs.

For the Giants, Tyler Fitzgerald contributed a two-run single and a stolen base that led to Matt Chapman's run in a double-steal play, marking their first home steal in seven years. Michael Conforto’s RBI double in the seventh brought the Giants within one run, but they couldn't complete the comeback. Kyle Harrison, making his first start since June 10, took the loss after allowing four runs over 3 1/3 innings.

In injury updates, Giants’ RHP Alex Cobb made a successful second rehab appearance for Single-A San Jose, while Guardians' LHP Matthew Boyd threw a simulated game and is expected to debut with Cleveland in August.

Captains Set Franchise Record with 20-1 Victory Over Dragons Friday Night

In the second game of their three-game home series, the Lake County Captains (7-6, 48-31) dominated the Dayton Dragons (8-6, 42-38) with a historic 20-1 victory on Friday night at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake. This triumph set a franchise record for Lake County, with an explosive 12-run bottom of the seventh inning tying their record for most runs in an inning.

The Captains made 18 plate appearances in the seventh inning, the most in a single frame since at least 2005. The inning started with RF Guy Lipscomb walking, followed by an RBI double from SS Angel Genao, MLB Pipeline’s No. 11 Cleveland prospect, which extended their lead to 6-1. Then, 3B Alex Mooney, and C Cooper Ingle, hit consecutive home runs, pushing the score to 9-1.

After DH Jorge Burgos’ flyout, six of the next seven Captains drew walks, including three consecutive bases-loaded walks. This was followed by a two-run single from Ingle, a two-run double from CF Jake Fox, and an RBI single from LF Jonah Advincula, completing the seventh-inning surge.

Lake County initially jumped to a 4-0 lead within the first four innings. In the first inning, Burgos hit an RBI ground-rule double, and 2B Jose Devers, MLB Pipeline’s No. 19 Cleveland prospect, delivered an RBI single. Fox added an RBI single in the third, and 1B Maick Collado hit a solo home run in the fourth. Mooney, after being hit by a pitch in the fifth, stole second base and scored on two errors by the Dragons, making it 5-1.

Captains' RHP Trenton Denholm (8-2) secured his eighth win of the season, pitching six innings and allowing only three hits, one earned run, and three walks, while striking out four on 78 pitches.

⚾ Captains Beat the Dragons Again on Saturday 3-0

Compared to Friday’s game, Saturday evenings game was rather quiet. Lake County defeated Dayton 3-0 with Dayton only getting 2 hits off the Captain’s pitching staff. The Captains only had 5 hits themselves but it was enough to pull out the win. Lake County’s starting pitcher Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson (2-1) got the win as we went 5 innings and only gave up 1 hit while striking out 8. Maick Collado hit a home run and had 2 RBIs for the Captains to secure the win.
