📰 Northeast Ohio Athletes Set to Shine at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Katie Nageotte

5 Summer Olympians with Ties to Northeast Ohio

As the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris approach, several athletes with ties to Northeast Ohio are preparing to compete on the world stage. With over 320 events across 32 sports, these five standout athletes have deep connections to Cleveland and the surrounding area.

Katie (Nageotte) Moon — Women’s Pole Vault

Katie Moon, an Olmsted Falls High School alum, is set to defend her pole vault title. Moon won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has since secured gold medals at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. She equaled her Olympic-winning vault of 4.90 meters in 2023 and took second place at the 2022 World Indoor Championship. In addition to her athletic achievements, she married Hugo Moon in 2022.

Morelle McCane — Women’s Boxing

Morelle McCane began boxing at 17 while attending Glenville High School. Now, 12 years later, she is representing the United States in Paris. McCane qualified for the Olympics with a silver medal at the 2023 Pan American Games. She will compete in the 66kg weight class, becoming the first female boxer from Cleveland and the second from Ohio to qualify for the Olympics.

LeBron James & Stephen Curry — Men’s Basketball

LeBron James, widely considered one of the greatest basketball players ever, hails from Akron. The Los Angeles Lakers forward will compete in his fourth Olympics, boasting two gold medals and one bronze. James holds the record for the most Olympic assists for USA Basketball and ranks high in games played and points scored.

Stephen Curry, although less associated with Northeast Ohio, was born in Akron while his father, Dell Curry, played for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite being the NBA's all-time leader in three-pointers, Curry has never played in the Olympics until now.

Marcus Christopher — Men’s BMX Freestyle

Canton resident Marcus Christopher will represent the United States in BMX Freestyle, which debuted at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Fresh off a gold medal at X Games Ventura 2024, Christopher aims to bring home a medal after Team USA missed the podium in Tokyo.

🏠 Spruce Up Your Space: DIY Weekend Projects for Every Room

Sprucing up your home can be a quick and rewarding project. Here are some easy do-it-yourself ideas that can be completed over a weekend to enhance both the function and style of your living spaces.

Start with your entrance. A vibrant front door color, updated hardware, and some potted plants can greatly improve curb appeal. Consider installing outdoor lighting to highlight architectural features and a new welcome mat to create a welcoming atmosphere.

In the kitchen, replacing your island surface or adding a fresh light fixture can make a significant impact. Swapping out your backsplash with new ceramic or glass tiles can transform the room's mood. For a simple update, consider installing a new faucet or replacing your cabinet hardware with stylish new designs.

Outdoor improvements can also be easily tackled in a weekend. Adding a window box filled with flowers can enhance the exterior charm, while hanging outdoor string lights can create a cozy atmosphere for your patio or deck. Installing a beaded board in the bathroom or kitchen can lend a traditional touch.

For efficiency and style, replace single-pane windows with energy-saving double-pane units or swap out your showerhead for a low-flow model. Adding a new coat of paint or self-adhesive wallpaper to an accent wall can dramatically change the look of a room.

Organize and decorate your entryway with stylish storage solutions, like a compact table with a lower shelf and a wall-mount shelf for easy access to essentials. Adding dimmers to your lights can quickly give your dining room a more elegant ambiance.

Transform your fireplace with a gas or wood-burning insert to boost energy efficiency. Consider replacing your interior doors or upgrading flooring with easier-to-install materials like sheet vinyl. Finally, add details like ceiling molding or a sliding barn door to give your home a distinctive look.

These projects are all designed to be completed over a weekend, making it easy to see a significant improvement in just a few days.
