🦉 Wildlife Festival at Lake Metroparks to Spotlight Ohio's Vulnerable Species

lakemetroparks.com

Lake Metroparks’ annual Wildlife Festival will take place Sunday July 14 from noon to 4 p.m. at Penitentiary Glen Reservation, 8668 Kirtland Chardon Road in Kirtland.

Supporting the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center’s mission to rehabilitate injured and orphaned animals, this year's festival centers around the theme "Sensitive Species." The event will explore Ohio’s most vulnerable wildlife and the challenges they face in today’s changing environment.

The festival will feature live animal training and enrichment sessions with various furry and feathery animal ambassadors. An all-new exhibit will showcase artwork created by some of the Wildlife Center’s resident animals, with the pieces being raffled off at the event's conclusion.

Attendees can engage in a scavenger hunt, prize drawings, and various hands-on activities and interactive exhibits, including a conservation station where they can learn about recent wildlife research conducted by local organizations.

Additionally, miniature train rides will be offered by the Lake Shore Live Steamers.

The Wildlife Festival is free to attend and is perfect for animal lovers of all ages. See the Details at Lakemetroparks.com and on Facebook.

📚 Mentor School Board Enacts New Policy on Library Books Amid Controversy

The Mentor Public School District's Board of Education has approved a new policy regarding library books following a heated debate over their content. The decision was made during a contentious meeting on Thursday night, where concerns about sexually explicit materials were raised.

Taxpayer Jacqueline McCormick emphasized the need for a safe environment, arguing that sexually explicit material should not be allowed in schools. This policy change follows parental challenges to certain books, including “Right Now! Real Kids Speaking Up for Change” and “Empire of Storms,” earlier this year.

Despite some parents considering these books inappropriate for children, the board had previously voted 3 to 2 in March to keep them available. During the recent meeting, another parent insisted that decisions about what children read should be made by parents, not teachers or librarians.

Under the new policy, the district will no longer accept donated books, aiming to prevent outside influences on the school libraries. Mentor School Board President Maggie Cook stressed the importance of focusing on education rather than political debates.

The policy also includes measures to keep parents informed about their children's reading choices. Parents will receive email notifications about books their children want to check out and have the option to deny these requests. Additionally, challenges to books will now be reviewed by a committee of educators instead of just the superintendent.

🏗️ New Apartments Rise on Former Geauga Lake Site in Bainbridge Township

The former site of Geauga Lake amusement park and SeaWorld is being transformed into a new residential and commercial area. Fresh wood, concrete, and construction activities mark the first phase of market-rate apartments.

Bainbridge Township trustee Jeffrey Markley highlighted this development as a significant change for the area, introducing apartments as a new living option not typical for Bainbridge or Geauga County. Markley acknowledged community concerns about apartments but emphasized the new lifestyle they bring.

In addition to the apartments, new Menards and Meijer stores are planned for the north side of the property, with openings expected in late 2025 or early 2026. A 55-and-older community will also be developed on the lake.

On the Aurora side, plans include a large public park with a beach, trails, and communal spaces. Markley noted that this project revitalizes 300 acres of long-blighted land, transforming it into a productive community asset.

If construction stays on schedule, the first tenants could move in by the end of this year or early next year.
