📈 Surging Grocery Prices: Top Tips to Save Money Amid Inflation

Photo by Tara Clark on Unsplash

Per the article from the Associated Press, grocery prices have surged by 21% since the onset of inflation over three years ago, affecting consumers' ability to afford essential items. Despite the slight easing of inflation, the cost of groceries remains high. While inflation is beyond individual control, adopting strategies to save on groceries can mitigate its impact on personal finances. Here are some expert recommendations for reducing grocery expenses:

Utilize Coupons Couponing has evolved beyond clipping from magazines. Apps from stores like Walmart and Target now offer digital coupons that automatically apply at checkout. Kiersten Torok, known as Torok Coupon Hunter, advises starting with familiar stores and avoiding unnecessary purchases despite discounts. Apps like Flipp and Ibotta can further simplify couponing by providing cashback and browsing options.

Track Spending and Budget David Brindley of AARP Bulletin emphasizes the importance of tracking current spending to create an effective grocery budget. Reviewing past receipts or bank statements can help set spending goals. Maintaining an inventory of pantry items, as suggested by Sarah Schweisthal of YNAB, prevents duplicate purchases and promotes cost-effective meal planning.

Plan Ahead Creating a shopping list with estimated costs helps maintain budget discipline. Allowing some flexibility for unplanned items can also aid in sticking to the plan. Tools like AnyList or Mealime can assist with meal planning and list-making.

Shop Online Online shopping and curbside pickup can curb impulse purchases. Torok recommends comparing prices online to save time and money, especially when buying from multiple stores.

Involve the Family Engaging family members in the budgeting process can make grocery shopping more efficient. Torok teaches her children to scan coupons, and Brindley suggests partnering with friends or family to buy in bulk and share discounts.

Food-Sharing Apps Food-sharing apps like Olio and Too Good to Go offer opportunities to buy surplus food at discounted rates, reducing waste and saving money.

Adopting these strategies can help manage grocery costs despite ongoing inflation, ensuring that essential purchases remain affordable.

🏙️ Cleveland Named Eighth-Best City for Recent College Graduates

Graduating from college is a significant milestone for many young adults across the United States each year. However, after receiving their diplomas, the pressing question becomes: What’s next?

For recent college graduates contemplating where to establish their post-graduation lives, the ADP Research Institute has published its rankings of the best and worst cities for new graduates. Excitingly, one of the top cities for recent college graduates is located in Ohio.

According to ADP’s report, Cleveland is the eighth-best city in the U.S. for recent college graduates. This study evaluated 55 U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of at least one million, using three key metrics: annual wages, hiring rates, and affordability. Cleveland ranked seventh in hiring rate (2.8%), eighth in affordability, and 36th in annual wage estimate ($45,760).

Overall, Cleveland achieved a combined percentile rank of 87, placing it eighth among the 55 cities assessed. The report highlighted that Greater Cleveland is attracting young adults, likely new graduates, at a higher rate than 87% of the studied metros. Additionally, the region's affordability surpasses 89% of other metros, though its wages are comparatively lower, ranking in the 35th percentile.

The top ten cities in ADP’s ranking are:

  1. Raleigh, NC (100 combined percentile rank)

  2. Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD (98)

  3. Austin-Round Rock, TX (96)

  4. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA (94)

  5. Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC (93)

  6. New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA (91)

  7. San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA (89)

  8. Cleveland-Elyria, OH (87)

  9. Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin, TN (85)

  10. Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, IN (83)

In addition to Cleveland, two other Ohio cities were included in the rankings. Columbus placed 19th with a 67th percentile rank, while Cincinnati came in 30th, sitting in the 46th percentile.

Noel's Pinch-Hit Homer Lifts Guardians to Victory Over Rays

Jhonkensy Noel hit a crucial two-run pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning, leading the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians to a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, halting their three-game losing streak.

Noel's fourth homer in 35 at-bats since his promotion from Triple-A Columbus last month came off Garrett Cleavinger (5-2), putting the Guardians ahead 4-2. This homer marked a pivotal moment in the game, providing the necessary runs to secure the win.

Nick Sandlin (6-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, while Emmanuel Clase secured his 29th save in 32 chances by closing out the ninth.

Despite going 0 for 4, Cleveland’s Steven Kwan saw his major league batting average drop slightly to .354 from .359.

The Rays, now under .500 at 47-48, saw Yandy Díaz drive in a run. Díaz’s third-inning double against Gavin Williams put Tampa Bay on the board. The Rays tied the game at 2 in the fifth when Richie Palacios tripled and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Daniel Schneemann.

The Guardians initially took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning with a solo homer from Angel Martinez and an RBI single by Andrés Giménez off Zack Littell.

Gavin Williams, in his third start of the season, allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits over five innings. He began the season on the injured list due to a right elbow injury sustained during spring training.

Littell pitched six innings for the Rays, giving up two runs (one earned) and six hits.

Up Next Guardians RHP Ben Lively (8-4, 3.59 ERA) will face Rays RHP Ryan Pepiot (5-5, 4.20 ERA) on Sunday.
