📰 Willoughby Police Capture Crocodile Monitor in Resident's Yard

Courtesy: Willoughby Police Department

The Willoughby Police Department recently had an unusual experience involving an exotic animal. On July 25, a resident reported finding a crocodile monitor lizard in their backyard, just five months after the department had dealt with peacocks roaming the city.

Officers Bucher and Thompson, along with Ohio Department of Natural Resources Lake County Agent Ryan Pawlus, responded to the scene to help capture the large lizard, which they nicknamed "Norman." The WPD noted, "We can’t make this stuff up. I never thought we would top the peacocks…”

Since handling such an exotic animal was a first for them, the WPD made several calls to ensure Norman received proper care. They enlisted assistance from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Dr. Dennis Summers from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Matt "the reptile guy," and Keith from the Herps Alive Foundation. Currently, Norman is staying at Herps Alive Foundation.

If anyone in the community is missing their pet crocodile monitor, they are encouraged to contact the Herps Alive Foundation at 216-374-1392.

🦟UPDATE: Mosquito Treatment Schedule Announced Mentor Residents

The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) is undertaking mosquito treatment efforts across densely populated areas in Lake County to mitigate the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and enhance summer comfort. Given that mosquitoes in the area can carry both La Crosse and St. Louis Encephalitis Virus and that there have been human cases in the past, the presence of mosquitoes is a significant public health concern. The recent spread of the West Nile Virus has further underscored this issue.

LCGHD is licensed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture to apply pesticides for mosquito control. Residents are encouraged to contact the LCGHD office for any further questions at (440) 350-2543 or (440) 918-2543, available weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Updated Treatment Schedule

The mosquito control treatment schedule is subject to change due to weather or other variables. Residents can obtain the latest schedule by calling the Health District Treatment Schedule Hotline at (440) 350-2088 or (440) 918-2088, available 24 hours a day or visiting LCGHD Mosquito Control.

🥗Celebrate Summer with Classic Panzanella Salad

Courtesy: foodiecrush.com

Panzanella, a beloved summer dish, is a traditional Tuscan bread salad with origins dating back to the fourteenth century, even before tomatoes were introduced to Italy. This simple peasant dish ingeniously transforms stale bread by combining it with raw vegetables, spices, oil, and vinegar. It remains one of the most delicious and easy ways to celebrate summer produce, particularly juicy tomatoes and fresh cucumbers. Variations such as peach panzanella with burrata and bacon, or a Greek-style version, offer delightful twists.

This recipe focuses on the classic, no-frills version of panzanella. The key is using slightly stale, chewy bread, which perfectly absorbs the tangy vinaigrette dressing without becoming soggy. The blend of flavors makes it an ideal salad for a hot summer evening, complementing almost any meal on the table.

Cleveland Defeats Philadelphia: Lively and Clase Secure Win

Ben Lively struck out six over six innings, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies, returning home after the All-Star break, struggled, losing for the fifth time in seven games. The Guardians, now with the best record in the American League, capitalized on Philadelphia's defensive errors.

To bolster their lineup, the Phillies acquired outfielder Austin Hays from the Orioles, trading pitcher Seranthony Domínguez and outfielder Cristian Pache. Hays is set to start on Saturday.

Guardians' reliever Cade Smith stopped a Phillies rally in the seventh, and Emmanuel Clase earned his 32nd save. Lively, now 9-6, allowed just three hits and two walks, with only Bryson Stott’s solo homer in the fifth. Phillies' starter Cristopher Sánchez allowed eight hits and three runs over six innings. Cleveland's David Fry, Bo Naylor, and Angel Martínez each contributed RBIs.

Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long was ejected in the third inning by plate umpire Rob Drake, adding to the team's frustrations on the night.
