📰 Lake County Approves Infrastructure and Historic Preservation Projects

The Lake County commissioners have passed two resolutions aimed at enhancing infrastructure and preserving a historic structure in Willowick and Willoughby.

The first resolution authorizes the use of county American Rescue Plan Act funds for a project to rehabilitate two main storm and sanitary trunk sewers in Willowick. These sewers, located on East 305th Street from Royalview Drive to Lake Shore Boulevard, are in poor condition and need urgent repairs. The $207,834 project addresses chronic fractures, joint separations, and calcification buildups that limit the sewers' capacity and cause excessive infiltration and inflow into the sanitary sewer. These defects have led to basement backups and allow contaminated stormwater to discharge directly into Lake Erie, posing a water quality issue. Willowick Mayor Michael Vanni expressed gratitude for the board's support, noting the project's importance in preventing flooding and improving city infrastructure. Paving will also occur next year, enhancing two main-entry streets into the city.

The second resolution approves a $250,000 grant for the renovation and restoration of the former Union High School in Willoughby. This project includes improvements to windows, HVAC systems, and potable water systems to convert the structure into multi-family housing. Willoughby Mayor Robert Fiala highlighted the renovation as the culmination of an eight-year effort to preserve the downtown historic district, started by former Mayor David Anderson. The early 20th-century school has been dormant for years and is in serious disrepair. Fiala emphasized the building's significance and the county's commitment to its preservation. Justin Gantz, from SoL Harris/Day Architecture, noted the replacement of outdated aluminum windows with historically accurate, energy-efficient ones as a key aspect of the exterior preservation.

🌠 Double Meteor Shower Delight: Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids Peak This July

Photo by Juskteez Vu on Unsplash

Get ready for a meteor shower doubleheader this summer with the Southern Delta Aquariid and Alpha Capricornid meteor showers.

The Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks in late July, coinciding this year with the Alpha Capricornid meteor shower. The Delta Aquariids, which are an annual event in North America’s late summer, will reach peak activity early Tuesday morning, with an expected 15 to 20 meteors visible per hour under dark skies in the Northern Hemisphere. Viewing is expected to be even better in the Southern Hemisphere. This shower will last through August 21, according to the American Meteor Society.

Around the same time, the Alpha Capricornid meteor shower will produce around five meteors per hour and lasts through August 15. Though less prolific, the Alpha Capricornids often feature very bright meteors, making them a highlight for skygazers.

What is a Meteor Shower?

Meteor showers occur annually and do not require special equipment to view. Most meteor showers originate from the debris of comets. The Delta Aquariids are believed to come from the comet 96P/Machholz, while the Alpha Capricornids originate from the comet 169P/NEAT.

When these space rocks enter Earth's atmosphere, air resistance makes them very hot, causing the air around them to glow and leaving a brief fiery tail — creating a “shooting star.” These glowing pockets of air around fast-moving space rocks can be seen in the night sky.

Viewing Tips

Meteor showers are best viewed between midnight and the predawn hours under dark skies away from city lights. Clear, cloudless nights and a waning moon enhance visibility. To improve your night vision, avoid checking your phone.

When is the Next Meteor Shower?

The next major meteor shower will be the Perseids, peaking in mid-August. The American Meteor Society provides an updated list of upcoming meteor showers, including peak viewing days and moonlight conditions.

🏘️Senior-Friendly Housing: Top 10 U.S. Markets Revealed

Top 10 U.S. Housing Markets for Senior Home Buyers

Senior home buyers often face the challenge of finding properties suited to their needs. According to the Census Bureau, only about 40% of houses in the U.S. offer basic senior accessibility, such as a step-free entryway with a first-floor bedroom and full bathroom. However, certain housing markets are more accommodating for seniors.

The baby boomer generation, owning about 32 million properties in the U.S. as of 2022, is increasingly looking to move. Whether downsizing, relocating to be closer to family, or seeking low-maintenance homes, the demand for aging-friendly homes is high. Yet, only about 40% of houses meet the basic requirements for seniors.

"There’s a major shortage of aging-friendly homes in the U.S.," noted Jackson Upcheshaw, brokerage lead at Opendoor. "The cities on our list provide an abundance of accessible homes, whether single-story or newly built, reducing renovation costs and easing the transition into their next phase of life."

A report from Opendoor analyzed the housing stock across the country to identify the top cities for senior home buyers. These cities were chosen based on the availability of homes with aging-friendly features such as single-story layouts, new constructions, and homes with at least one bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.

"As baby boomers look to downsize, these aging-friendly cities become increasingly desirable and necessary," Upcheshaw added.

Below are the top 3 housing markets for seniors in 2024. See the full list of 10 at themortgagereports.com. Also, see the full report from Opendoor for the full Top 10 list for more great information for Senior Home Buyers.

  1. Orlando, Florida

    • 80.85% homes with bed+bath on the first floor

  2. Las Vegas, Nevada

    • 4.65% single-story homes

  3. Charlotte, North Carolina

    • 33.03% homes with bed+bath on the first floor

Kwan's Late Homer Secures Guardians' Victory Against Phillies

Jhonkensy Noel's three hits, including a three-run home run, helped the Cleveland Guardians secure a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Steven Kwan added a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning, leading the Guardians to victory in the deciding game of their series. Despite Kyle Schwarber's two home runs for the Phillies, Cleveland's bullpen held firm.

Cleveland’s bullpen, including Cade Smith, Nick Sandlin, Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis, and Scott Barlow, combined for 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, one hit, relief. Emmanuel Clase closed the game in the ninth inning, earning his 33rd save of the season and 20th consecutive save.

Joey Cantillo made his major league debut for Cleveland, allowing three runs and four hits over 3 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old left-hander also struck out three and walked three.

The Guardians lead the AL Central with a record of 63-42.
