Guardians' Offense Erupts in Victory Against Orioles, Maintain MLB's Best Record

Josh Naylor had three hits and two RBIs, while Austin Hedges added two more RBIs as the Cleveland Guardians scored eight consecutive runs to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 8-4 on Friday night. This victory marks the Guardians' fifth straight win, solidifying their status as the MLB leaders with a 67-42 record. They lead the American League Central by six games over the Kansas City Royals.

In a dominating series, the Guardians have outscored the Orioles 18-7 over the first two games. Hedges managed to score from second base on José Ramírez’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, thanks to a rundown that saw Steven Kwan return safely to first. Brayan Rocchio initially scored during the play, pushing Cleveland's lead to 8-1.

Cade Smith (6-1) secured the win in relief, retiring all five batters he faced. The Guardians also boast the best home record in the majors at 35-15.

Baltimore's Colton Cowser and Jackson Holliday each had RBI singles in a three-run seventh inning. Cowser extended his hitting streak to 15 games, while rookie Holliday had his first two-hit game. Orioles' top prospect, Coby Mayo, went 0 for 2 with two walks and a run in his major league debut after being called up from Triple-A Norfolk.

Dean Kremer (4-8) took the loss for Baltimore, giving up four runs over five innings, marking his third straight defeat. Gregory Soto followed and allowed four more runs in his first appearance since joining from Philadelphia.

Carlos Carrasco started for Cleveland, pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit, striking out five, and walking four. His winless streak now extends to seven starts.

Mayo impressed in Triple-A with a .301 average, 20 home runs, and 61 RBIs over 77 games, leading the International League with a .586 slugging percentage. He was drafted in the fourth round in 2020.
