⛈️ Storm Aftermath: Mentor Faces Multi-Day Power Outage, Cleanup Continues

City of Mentor - Free Bags of Ice and Water Distribution Today
The aftermath of Tuesday night’s storms continues to affect the Mentor area, with significant power outages still impacting residents. As of Friday morning, 24% of households, equating to 5,691 of the 23,520 households in Mentor, remain without electricity. First Energy has reported over 3,200 hazard calls regarding downed live wires across Northeast Ohio, signaling that power restoration could extend through August 14th.
Residents are advised to treat this as a multi-day outage. If you encounter a downed power line, immediately call 911 to report it. For updates on power restoration, visit First Energy's website or register for text alerts by texting REG to 544487, ensuring you have your account number and zip code handy. Internet services may also be affected by the storm; contact your provider directly if you experience issues.
All roads within the city have been reopened, but motorists should avoid any areas marked off with tape, as live wires may be present. At intersections without functioning traffic signals, remember to treat them as four-way stops. Waste Management's curbside collection will be delayed by one day this week. Additionally, the city’s Public Works department will be picking up storm debris from curbs, provided limbs are no more than 6 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length.
First Energy distributed ice and bottled water at the Mentor Senior Center at 8484 Munson Road until 6pm Friday and again today from 6am - 6pm today while supplies last.
A beach hazards statement is in effect from this evening through Sunday evening, affecting the lakeshore areas of Lake, Ashtabula, and Cuyahoga Counties. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water due to a high risk of dangerous riptides.
City facilities are operating on various schedules:
Open facilities: Mentor Municipal Center, Morton Pool (last day for swimming is Saturday, August 10), Black Brook Golf Course, Wildwood Cultural Center, Walsh Park, and Mentor Cemetery.
Limited operation facilities: Mentor Senior Center (open as a cooling and charging station with limited hours), Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina (closed paths due to downed power lines), and Mentor Community Recreation Center (reopened on Friday).
Closed facilities: Mentor Ice Arena and Civic Center Pool.
This information will be updated as new details become available. For further inquiries, residents can contact the city or visit the city’s social media channels.
🚨 Mentor Dispatch Temporarily Relocates to Lake County Central Amid Generator Issue
Residents of Mentor should be aware that the Mentor Dispatch center is temporarily relocating to Lake County Central due to a problem with their onsite backup generator. While 911 calls will continue to be processed without interruption, callers will now hear "Lake County Dispatch" instead of "Mentor Dispatch" when they connect.
For non-emergency dispatch inquiries, residents are advised to call 440-354-3434 until further notice. Authorities will provide an update once the generator issue is resolved or power is restored to the main campus.
🦟 Mosquito Treatment Scheduled in Lake County: Mentor-on-the-Lake Next
The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) is actively conducting mosquito control treatments across many densely populated areas within Lake County. These efforts aim to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and ensure a more pleasant summer experience for residents. The presence of mosquitoes, which can carry viruses, poses a significant public health concern. In the past, cases of mosquito-borne diseases have been identified in the district, underscoring the importance of these treatments.
The LCGHD holds a license from the Ohio Department of Agriculture to apply pesticides specifically for mosquito control. Residents seeking additional information can reach out to the Health District’s offices during regular business hours or consult the Treatment Schedule Hotline, available 24/7, for updates. The mosquito control schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.
On Monday, August 12, 2024, treatments are scheduled for the Mentor-on-the-Lake area.
🌊 Warning Issued for Beaches: Stay Out of the Water Due to Riptides

City of Mentor
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued, effective from this evening through Sunday evening, for the lakeshore areas of Lake, Ashtabula, and Cuyahoga counties. The statement warns of a high risk of riptides, posing a significant danger to swimmers. The currents can swiftly pull swimmers away from the shore, especially through sandbars and along structures that extend into the lake. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to stay out of the water during this period to avoid these hazardous conditions.

🍽 Savor the Summer: Burrata Salad with Marinated Tomatoes and Balsamic Glaze

A summer salad featuring creamy burrata cheese paired with peppery arugula, marinated tomatoes, and a balsamic glaze offers a delightful introduction to this Italian delicacy. Burrata, a cheese originally from Puglia, Italy, is now widely available and can elevate a variety of dishes. Grape tomatoes are ideal for this salad, but other types like cherry or heirloom tomatoes can be used for added flavor and visual appeal.

🏋️♀️ No Gym Required: Maximizing Fitness with Home Exercises
Home workout routines offer a convenient way to stay fit without needing a gym. Bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, and lunges are effective for building strength, while adding resistance bands or dumbbells can increase difficulty. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) provides an efficient cardiovascular workout, and options like yoga and Pilates combine strength and mindfulness. Online platforms make it easy to find guided routines that suit your needs, with consistency being crucial to achieving your fitness goals from home.

⚾ Twins Sweep Guardians, Tighten AL Central Race with Key Wins
The Minnesota Twins clinched a doubleheader sweep against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, tightening the AL Central race. In the nightcap, Matt Wallner’s crucial three-run homer in the fifth inning led the Twins to a 6-3 victory, marking Cleveland’s seventh consecutive loss. This victory brought Minnesota (65-50) within 1.5 games of the division-leading Guardians (67-49), the closest they’ve been since mid-May.
In the first game, Bailey Ober delivered a dominant performance with six shutout innings, supported by solo homers from Carlos Santana and Ryan Jeffers, securing a 4-2 win for the Twins. Ober's efforts underscored his emergence as a key pitcher, especially as the team navigates injuries in their starting rotation.
The second game saw Cleveland starter Alex Cobb struggle in his season debut after being acquired from San Francisco in a late-July trade. Cobb, coming off offseason hip surgery, allowed three consecutive two-out hits in the fifth, including Wallner’s towering 106.9 mph homer, which was the Twins' first 3-0 count homer this season. Cobb exited with the Guardians trailing, adding to their recent woes.
Cleveland’s offense, which initially showed promise with a three-run homer from Josh Naylor, was stifled by the Twins’ bullpen. The Guardians went hitless after starter Louie Varland exited in the fifth inning.
In a night marked by unusual plays, the Twins capitalized on defensive mistakes by the Guardians. Willi Castro executed a delayed steal of home, and Christian Vázquez scored from second base following an errant throw by shortstop Brayan Rocchio. Vázquez also later scored on a balk by reliever Tim Herrin, leading to a heated confrontation and the ejection of rookie manager Stephen Vogt.
The Guardians, who haven't faced such a long losing streak this season until now, will need to regroup quickly. They face the Twins again on Saturday, with Gavin Williams set to start against Minnesota's Simeon Woods Richardson.
