📰 Northeast Ohio Counties Reeling as DeWine Issues Emergency Declaration
Governor Mike DeWine declared a state of emergency on Saturday for eight Northeast Ohio counties grappling with the aftermath of Tuesday's severe storms, which brought four tornadoes, widespread damage, and prolonged power outages. The counties affected include Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Portage, Summit, and Trumbull.
The emergency declaration enables the state to expedite assistance to these communities. Although no additional state support has been requested so far, the governor emphasized that the state remains committed to helping local communities recover as needed.
Governor DeWine has also instructed Ohio Emergency Management Agency Director Sima Merick to seek a damage assessment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to further evaluate the situation.
In response to the storm, the state health department has already provided mobile oxygen generators to Cuyahoga County, with a refilling station set up at Brook Park's recreation center over the weekend.
Earlier on Saturday, Cuyahoga County officials urged the state to declare an emergency, citing the significant destruction caused by the tornadoes, which left hundreds of thousands of residents without power. County Executive Chris Ronayne called for the waiver of the state’s $5.9 million damage threshold required for an emergency declaration. While this threshold had not been met at the time, local officials expect it to be reached soon and argued that the current red tape should not delay necessary aid.
The storms, described by FirstEnergy as the most severe in over 30 years for The Illuminating Company’s service area, included a tornado that traveled 17 miles from Brook Park to Bedford— the longest tornado track Cuyahoga County has seen in over 70 years.
⛈️ Power Outages Persist in Mentor; Full Restoration Expected by August 14th
As of Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 8:30 AM, 24% of Mentor, equating to 5,624 of the city’s 23,520 households, remain without power following severe storms that struck on Tuesday night. First Energy has indicated that full restoration may not occur until August 14th.
Residents can monitor the status of their outage and sign up for alerts via First Energy’s website, firstenergycorp.com. To receive text message alerts, text REG to 544487, ensuring you have your account number and zip code available.
In response to the storm, Mentor Public Works is providing curbside pickup of yard debris. Residents should ensure that branches do not exceed 6 inches in diameter and are cut to lengths of less than 8 feet. To schedule a pickup or for any inquiries, contact Public Works at [email protected] or 440-974-5781.
Additionally, a beach hazards statement is in effect for lakeshore areas in Lake, Ashtabula, and Cuyahoga counties through Sunday evening. A high risk of riptides means swimmers should avoid entering the water, as strong currents could carry them away from the shore or into dangerous areas near structures.
The Mentor Senior Center will continue to serve as a cooling and charging station on Sunday, August 11, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Free ice and water will be available in the parking lot from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, while supplies last.
Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina is currently open but without electricity or phone service. All trails remain closed due to downed power lines. The Mentor Ice Arena and Civic Center Pool will remain closed until further notice.
For ongoing updates, residents are encouraged to check the city’s official channels, including AM 1620 and the city’s Facebook and X accounts. For further questions, contact the city at 440-255-1100 or [email protected].

🗺️ ODOT Offers Free Road Maps: A Reliable Backup for Your Summer Road Trip

Photo by Owaiz Raiyan on Unsplash
If you're planning a late summer road trip around Ohio, don't forget to pick up your free state road map, provided by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). ODOT is currently distributing 1.4 million copies of the newly updated Ohio state road map, featuring the latest information on road changes, routes, and points of interest. This marks the first update in at least four years.
While digital navigation apps are popular, ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks emphasizes that paper maps still serve an important purpose as online resources can go offline, and cell service can fail. It’s smart to have a back-up paper map in your car. Whether you're exploring Ohio's parks, planning a business trip, or simply charting a route, the new state map is a reliable companion.
The map also offers convenient information on Ohio's 76 state parks, fun facts about the state, and contact details for the Ohio State Highway Patrol. However, it doesn't include instructions on the classic challenge of folding it back up!
You can get your copy of the 2024 Ohio state road map at any highway rest area or request one via ODOT's website. A digital version is also available online.

⚾ Kwan's Leadoff Blast Powers Guardians to Victory, Halting Seven-Game Skid
Steven Kwan launched the second pitch of the game into the stands, setting the tone for the Cleveland Guardians' 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night. This victory snapped a season-long seven-game losing streak for the Guardians and provided some much-needed breathing room in the tight AL Central race, extending their lead over the Twins to 2.5 games.
Gavin Williams (2-4) delivered a stellar performance for Cleveland, pitching six strong innings. He allowed just one run on four hits, with no walks and three strikeouts, marking his best outing in eight starts this season.
Kwan, a key player in Cleveland's lineup, smashed a fastball from Twins pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson into the right-center field seats for his 11th home run of the season. This homer matches Kwan's combined total from his first two seasons in the majors.
Bo Naylor's also homered. His ninth home run, also on a first-pitch fastball, came in the sixth inning and was the difference maker in the 2-1 win for Cleveland.
The Twins responded with a double by Willi Castro in the bottom of the sixth, followed by consecutive groundouts to score their lone run. However, Cleveland's bullpen shut down any further attempts, with Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase each delivering a flawless inning. Clase secured his 34th save, the second-highest in the majors this season, in 37 opportunities.

🏈 Mentor Gears Up for Season Opener After Impressive Scrimmage Display

Mentor's football team impressed in a three-way scrimmage against Kenston and Austintown-Fitch on August 9, with their offense, led by quarterback Scotty Fox, showing midseason form. Despite a straightforward playbook, the Cardinals efficiently scored, thanks to a strong passing game and solid offensive line. The defense also performed well, with daily practice against them credited for the offense's sharpness. The scrimmage was overshadowed by an injury to key player Marcus Sierputowski. Mentor is set for another scrimmage against Chardon on August 15.
