📰 Microearthquake Hits Near Lake Erie Shore; Five Residents Report Tremor

The United States Geological Survey confirmed a minor 1.8-magnitude earthquake off the shore of Lake Erie on Wednesday morning. The tremor occurred around 9:30 a.m., approximately three miles from Lakeline village, marking Lake County’s 29th earthquake in 2024.

The quake took place at a depth of around five kilometers, which is a little more than three miles. Although earthquakes of this magnitude, referred to as “microearthquakes,” are typically too weak to be felt, five residents of Eastlake reported sensing the tremor.

Lake County has experienced 28 other earthquakes so far this year, the strongest being a 2.8-magnitude event in June, as noted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

🐕‍🦺 A Healthy Smile for Your Pet: Simple Dental Care Strategies

Keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy is a crucial part of their overall well-being. Dental care is often overlooked by many pet owners, but it plays a vital role in preventing pain, disease, and even serious health issues in animals. By establishing a regular dental routine, you can help your pet lead a longer, healthier life.

Why Dental Care is Important

Just like humans, pets can suffer from plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to infections that may spread to other parts of the body, causing severe health problems such as heart, kidney, or liver disease. In fact, veterinarians estimate that by the age of three, many dogs and cats show signs of dental disease. This makes it essential to start a dental care routine early in your pet’s life.

Signs of Dental Problems

Be on the lookout for common symptoms of dental disease in pets. Bad breath is often the first sign that something might be wrong. Additionally, watch for red or swollen gums, excessive drooling, difficulty eating, or visible tartar on your pet's teeth. If your pet displays any of these signs, it’s important to consult your veterinarian, as professional dental cleaning may be necessary.

Tips for Home Dental Care

  1. Brush Their Teeth Regularly: Brushing your pet’s teeth is the most effective way to prevent plaque buildup. Use a pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste to avoid harmful ingredients found in human toothpaste. Start slow, allowing your pet to adjust to the sensation, and aim for daily brushing.

  2. Provide Dental Chews and Toys: Dental chews are a great way to reduce tartar and massage your pet’s gums. Many pet stores offer a wide range of toys designed to help clean your pet’s teeth while they play.

  3. Schedule Regular Vet Checkups: Routine veterinary visits should include dental examinations. Your vet will assess your pet’s oral health and recommend professional cleaning when necessary.

  4. Consider a Special Diet: Some pet foods are formulated to support dental health by reducing plaque and tartar. Consult your veterinarian about the best diet options for your pet’s specific needs.

Conclusion

Caring for your pet's dental health is a simple but essential part of keeping them happy and healthy. By maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, you can help prevent many painful and costly health issues down the road. With regular care and attention, your furry companion can enjoy a lifetime of strong, healthy teeth and gums.

Cobb Secures First Win of the Year as Guardians Dominate Cubs 6-1

Alex Cobb secured his first win in nearly a year, leading the American League-leading Cleveland Guardians to a decisive 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Andrés Giménez played a pivotal role, driving in three runs as Cleveland completed a three-game sweep, extending their winning streak to five games. The Guardians, with a 72-49 record, boast the best home record in the majors at 38-20.

Cobb, who underwent hip surgery last October and was traded to Cleveland in late July, delivered an impressive performance, allowing just one run and three hits over 5 2/3 innings. This victory marks his first since pitching a one-hitter for San Francisco nearly a year ago. In contrast, Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon struggled, giving up four runs over six innings, contributing to Chicago’s third consecutive loss after a brief four-game winning streak.

The Cubs initially took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Seiya Suzuki tripled and scored on Cody Bellinger’s sacrifice fly. However, Cleveland quickly responded in the bottom of the inning with Josh Naylor doubling in José Ramírez and later scoring on a single by Giménez. Giménez continued to shine in the eighth, doubling off Julian Merryweather to drive in Ramírez and Lane Thomas, sealing the victory for the Guardians.

Sam Hentges remains sidelined with a lingering left shoulder issue that has kept him out of action since July 12. Hentges recently traveled to the Dallas area to seek a second opinion on his shoulder after a rough rehab appearance for Triple-A Columbus, where he allowed three runs without recording an out. His return remains uncertain as the team monitors his recovery.

The Chicago Cubs will face the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, seeking to regain momentum after their recent struggles. The Guardians hit the road for a week-long trip, starting with a series against the Milwaukee Brewers. In the opener on Friday, Cleveland's right-hander Gavin Williams (2-4, 4.38 ERA) will face Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale (3-8, 5.02 ERA).
