City of Mentor

The City of Mentor’s unemployment rate dropped slightly to 3.8% in July 2024, marking a 0.1% decrease from the previous month. Although Mentor has seen a slight improvement, the unemployment rate was notably lower a year ago at 3.0%. đź“° Lake Metroparks to Host Family-Friendly Event Exploring Amphibians and Reptiles

Lake Metroparks will host "Snakes, Turtles & More: Hungry Hungry Herps!" on August 25, from noon to 4 p.m., at Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland. The free event offers an interactive opportunity to learn about herptiles (reptiles and amphibians) and their crucial role in the environment.

Herptiles, including snakes, turtles, and salamanders, serve as indicator species due to their sensitivity to pollutants and environmental changes, making them key to understanding ecosystem health. The Herps Alive Foundation will feature rehabilitated reptiles and amphibians for close-up encounters, while the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center will present live training sessions with animal ambassadors.

Activities include exploring ponds, streams, and logs to discover amphibians and reptiles with the help of naturalists. Visitors can also enjoy habitat hunts, crafts, and exhibits.

🏖️ Why Mental Health Days Are Crucial for Well-Being

In today’s fast-paced world, taking time for mental health is more important than ever. While most people are familiar with sick days, the concept of mental health days is still evolving. Yet, they are just as essential as physical health days in maintaining overall well-being.

Mental health days are planned days off from work or school that allow individuals to recharge, decompress, and regain mental clarity. These days can help people cope with stress, anxiety, and burnout, which are often overlooked in the daily grind. By taking a break from routine pressures, individuals can prevent long-term mental health issues such as depression or chronic stress.

Recognizing the need for a mental health day requires self-awareness and honesty. Often, people push through difficult emotions or stress, thinking that they should be able to handle it on their own. But just as you wouldn’t ignore a physical illness, neglecting mental strain can lead to greater problems down the road. Taking a day to step back, rest, and focus on mental well-being can improve mood, increase productivity, and prevent more serious issues from developing.

Employers and schools are increasingly understanding the importance of mental health. Many companies now offer mental health days as part of their wellness programs, acknowledging that mental health is directly linked to productivity and job satisfaction. For students, mental health days can provide a much-needed break from academic pressures, helping them return to their studies refreshed and ready to learn.

When taking a mental health day, it’s important to focus on activities that restore calm and happiness. For some, this may mean engaging in a favorite hobby, going for a walk in nature, or simply resting at home. The key is to disconnect from stress and give your mind the space it needs to recover.

Prioritizing mental health benefits everyone. By allowing yourself time to recharge and address mental and emotional needs, you can improve your overall quality of life. Taking a mental health day is not an indulgence; it’s a necessity for long-term well-being and happiness.

âšľ Lane Thomas Fuels Six-Run 12th Inning as Guardians Outlast Yankees in Marathon

Lane Thomas came through in a big way for the Cleveland Guardians, delivering a crucial tiebreaking double in the 12th inning that sparked a six-run rally to defeat the New York Yankees 9-5 in a marathon game on Tuesday night. The four-hour-plus contest was the longest in the major leagues this season.

Thomas, who had been in a slump, broke the deadlock by driving in the first run since the fourth inning, helping Cleveland extend its lead in the AL Central. The hit was a much-needed boost for Thomas, whose last RBI came in July. His double scored Daniel Schneemann, and the Guardians' offense exploded from there.

Following Thomas’ hit, Jose Ramírez drove in another run, and David Fry broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple, pushing the score to 8-3. Cleveland's aggressive offense proved too much for New York, who issued a total of 14 walks—matching a dubious feat they hadn’t done since 1993.

Despite strong starts from New York's Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, who hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, the Yankees couldn’t capitalize on multiple scoring chances, going 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position and leaving 12 men on base. The Yankees’ struggles at the plate continued as they dropped their third straight game, slipping behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East race.

Cleveland’s pitching staff held firm, with closer Emmanuel Clase pitching two scoreless innings and Tim Herrin earning the win. In the end, Scott Barlow closed out the game after allowing a late two-run double from Judge, securing a victory that extended Cleveland’s division lead to 3.5 games as both the Royals and the Twins lost.
