🏈Mentor Football's Century Celebration Kicks Off with Big Events Today

Mentor Cardinals v. Massillon Jackson Polar Bears

Kickoff is at 7pm but don’t miss all the festivities prior to the game starting with the Tailgate Home Opener event starting at 4pm!  

Mentor is set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its football program with a grand event TODAY, August 23. The festivities will kick off three hours before the season opener against Massillon Jackson. Hosted at the Mentor Amphitheater and Jerome T. Osborne Stadium, the celebration will include food trucks, live music, and performances from local cheerleaders and the school choir. Alumni from the 1960s to the 2020s will be recognized, with a special tribute to Jim and Nancy Mate, Mentor Class of 1948 (Wow!).

At 6:30 p.m., the coin toss will be conducted by Jim Mate, a former team captain, alongside his wife Nancy. The city's youth football teams will join the Mentor band and cheerleaders on the field for pregame ceremonies. Later, a lucky student will attempt a "kick of destiny" to win a year’s supply of Raising Cane’s chicken.

After the game, a fireworks display will light up the sky as players and coaches gather on the field. The event is being made possible by the Mentor Redline booster club and private donations, and a 50-50 raffle will help cover additional costs. Mentor's head coach, Matt Gray, expressed pride in the program’s rich history and its bright future, both on and off the field.

🎶Tunes at the Lagoons: Cheeseburgers in Paradise to Close Out Free Summer Concert Series

Cheeseburgers in Paradise

The band, Cheeseburgers in Paradise, will close out the season with their energetic performances featuring island tunes, summer classics, and Jimmy Buffett favorites. Led by the talented Tom, who plays a variety of instruments including the ukulele and harmonica, this band will create the perfect beach-party atmosphere to cap off the summer season.

The event is family-friendly, with food trucks offering delicious eats and beverages, including a selection of beers and wines for attendees 21 and over. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for comfortable field seating. Admission and parking are free, thanks to the support of local sponsors.

🚨 Mentor Police Seek Public Help Identifying Man in Investigation

The Mentor Police Department is requesting the public's assistance in identifying a male individual linked to an ongoing investigation. Authorities have shared photos of the man and are encouraging anyone who may recognize him or possess additional information to come forward. If you have any details regarding this case, please contact Officer Tayerle at 440-255-1234 and mention case #24-19802. Alternatively, individuals can send information via a private message to the department.

🏈 Lake Catholic Cougars Aim for Redemption Against Cardinal Mooney Tonight

The Lake Catholic Cougars will kick off their season tonight with a matchup against the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals at 7 p.m. in Youngstown, Ohio. Last season, Cardinal Mooney narrowly defeated the Cougars in Mentor with a close 29-26 victory. This year, the Cougars are determined to flip the script and start the season strong. Additionally, Lake Catholic will host their home opener on Saturday, September 7th, against Erie, which will also mark the team's Senior Night celebration.

⚾ Judge Powers Yankees to 6-0 Win; Cole Reaches 150 Career Wins

Aaron Judge belted his league-leading 48th home run of the season, while Gerrit Cole notched his 150th career win, as the New York Yankees blanked the Cleveland Guardians 6-0 on Thursday. Judge homered for the third consecutive game, lifting him closer to another 60-homer season, having achieved the milestone two years ago when he set a new American League record with 62. Judge’s power surge has been remarkable, with six homers in his last seven games and 13 in his last 23.

Cole delivered six scoreless innings, allowing only one hit—on his second pitch of the game—while issuing five walks but holding Cleveland in check. Cole’s performance earned him a place among active pitchers with 150 wins, alongside Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Clayton Kershaw.

The Yankees' offense ignited in the fifth inning after Judge was intentionally walked to load the bases. Austin Wells hit a sacrifice fly, and Giancarlo Stanton followed with a three-run homer, marking the 10th time this season the duo homered in the same game. New York’s bullpen finished the game by retiring the final 27 Cleveland batters, securing the team’s 10th shutout of the season.

Cleveland's Gavin Williams struggled, allowing three runs over 4 1/3 innings and becoming the latest victim of Judge’s home-run barrage. The Guardians' offense sputtered, managing just one hit for the second time this season and enduring their 13th shutout loss.

The Mr. Football Award has been presented each year since 1987 to Ohio's top high school football player, as selected by the Associated Press.
