📰 Northeast Ohio SNAP Recipients to Receive Automatic Benefits Replacements After Power Outages
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) has received federal approval to automatically replace benefits for certain Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in northeast Ohio who lost food due to recent power outages. This waiver applies to all SNAP recipients in Geauga and Lake counties, as well as 52 ZIP codes in Cuyahoga County. Eligible individuals will automatically receive a portion of their benefits by August 30, 2024, based on how close their last payment was to the storm date. The replacement percentage ranges from 60% to 15%. For those not eligible for automatic replacement, the deadline to apply for reimbursement has been extended to September 5, 2024. Affected households need to submit proof of the outage to their local County Department of Job and Family Services (CDJFS) to qualify.
SNAP recipients who lost perishable food due to a power outage of four hours or more are eligible for replacement benefits. The federal waiver allows ODJFS to expedite the process, ensuring that assistance reaches impacted households more quickly.

🏈 Mentor Cardinals Dominate in 100th Year Celebration with 36-13 Victory
The city of Mentor celebrated a century of high school football with a day full of festivities, culminating in a thrilling game at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium. The Mentor High Cardinals took the field in front of an enthusiastic crowd, securing a dominant 36-13 victory over the visiting Jackson Polar Bears.
The game started off close, with Mentor holding a slim 14-13 lead at halftime. However, the Cardinals exploded in the second half, particularly in the third quarter, where they scored 22 unanswered points. This offensive surge, led by standout performances from players like Austin Van Nuss and Jackson Farley, sealed the win and ensured a memorable night for the community.
Farley was unstoppable, rushing for 188 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, while quarterback Scotty Fox completed 7 of 12 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Senior linebacker Spencer Barninger also played a pivotal role on defense, recording three sacks, seven tackles, and a crucial forced fumble and recovery on the first play of the game.
After the game, the sky lit up with a spectacular fireworks show to commemorate 100 years of Mentor High School football, echoing the earlier explosive performance by the Cardinals on the field. The night’s celebrations showcased the strong bond between the community and its football team, reinforcing the deep traditions that have been built over the past century.
The Cardinals, with 11 straight season-opening wins, are setting the stage for another promising year, continuing to build on the legacy of Mentor football.
🏈 Lake Catholic Shuts Out Cardinal Mooney in 14-0 Season Opener
DJ Sears with a 3 yard TD run! @LCCougarFB 14 Mooney 0 with 5:46 left in the game! Let’s go Cougars!
— Lake Catholic (@LCHS_Cougars)
1:07 AM • Aug 24, 2024
The Lake Catholic Cougars kicked off their season with a commanding 14-0 victory over the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals in Youngstown on Friday night. The Cougars' defense dominated the game, securing a shutout and exacting revenge after a narrow loss to Cardinal Mooney last season.
Lake Catholic took control just prior to the half when Frankie Trinetti threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Caden Boyes to make the score 7-0. The Cougars defense held firm throughout, preventing any offensive breakthroughs by the Cardinals. The Cougars solidified their win with a second touchdown late in the game when DJ Sears scored on a 3 yard touchdown run, sealing the final score at 14-0.
This opening win marks a strong start for the Cougars, showcasing their defensive strength and determination to improve on last year’s performance.
⚾ Guardians Stumble at Home, Texas Hangs On for 5-3 Victory
The Cleveland Guardians lost 5-3 to the Texas Rangers after Texas struck early with four runs in the second inning. Despite cutting the deficit and a late opportunity to tie the game in the eighth inning, Cleveland couldn't complete the comeback. Guardians’ starter Tanner Bibee struggled in the second inning, while Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi secured the win with a steady performance.
Cleveland's struggles continue post-All-Star Break, as they are 15-18 since then and remain inconsistent at home.
