🐢 Ohio's Endangered Blanding's Turtle Finds New Hope in Mentor Marsh

Courtesy: Greater Cleveland Aquarium
The Blanding's Turtle Reintroduction Project is making strides in helping the endangered Blanding's turtle regain its footing in Ohio's Mentor Marsh Nature Preserve. With 90% of their native wetland habitat lost, these turtles have been on the brink of disappearing from the state. In fact, Blanding's turtles had not been spotted in Mentor Marsh for over 90 years until recent efforts began to change that.
Launched in 2020, this collaborative effort among nonprofit organizations and government agencies aims to restore the turtle population using advanced technology. The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium started the process by hatching 20 baby Blanding’s turtles, which were then nurtured for two years by the Greater Cleveland Aquarium and the nonprofit Wild4Ever.
In June, when the turtles had grown strong enough to survive in the wild, they were equipped with GPS tracking units powered by solar panels. These devices, attached to their shells, allow scientists to monitor their movements and determine the best habitats for future reintroduction. Drones have also been employed to gather additional data, providing insights into the environmental conditions that support the species' survival.
This initiative represents a collaborative effort that brings together various community partners, driven by a shared commitment to animal welfare, species protection, and habitat conservation. The project follows in the footsteps of other reintroduction programs in the region, including one led by the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and John Carroll University at Sheldon’s Marsh in Huron.

🪟 Is It Time for New Windows? Five Key Warning Signs
Windows are a crucial element of every home, providing natural light, insulation, and aesthetic appeal. However, like most things, they do not last forever. Over time, windows can become inefficient or worn out, affecting your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Here are some important signs that it might be time to replace your windows.
1. Drafts and Poor Insulation
One of the clearest signs of aging windows is the presence of drafts. If you notice cold air seeping in during the winter or warm air leaking in during the summer, it’s a sign your windows are no longer providing adequate insulation. This can lead to higher energy bills as your heating or cooling system works harder to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
2. Difficulty Opening or Closing
Windows should operate smoothly. If you struggle to open or close your windows, this could indicate warping, rust, or rot in the frame or window hardware. Not only is this frustrating, but it can also be a safety issue if you need to escape quickly during an emergency.
3. Condensation Between Panes
Condensation trapped between the glass panes of double or triple-pane windows is a red flag. This indicates that the window’s seal has failed, allowing moisture to enter. Once the seal is compromised, the insulating properties of the window decrease significantly, leading to energy loss and reduced comfort inside the home.
4. Outside Noise Becoming Louder
If you’ve started to notice that outdoor noises seem louder than before, it might be due to aging or ineffective windows. Good-quality, well-insulated windows should help block a significant amount of exterior noise. If this function is deteriorating, it might be time for an upgrade.
5. Visible Damage
Cracked or broken glass, chipped frames, and decaying wood are clear signs that your windows need replacement. Beyond aesthetics, damaged windows can also lead to security vulnerabilities, moisture intrusion, and further structural damage if left unchecked.
Replacing old windows can offer numerous benefits such as improved energy efficiency, better sound insulation, increased home value, and enhanced curb appeal. If you recognize any of these signs in your windows, it may be time to consider a replacement.

⚾ Royals Sweep Guardians, Move Within One Game of AL Central Lead
Salvador Perez had a standout performance in Game 2 of a doubleheader, hitting a grand slam and driving in six runs as the Kansas City Royals secured a 9-4 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. This victory completed a sweep of the doubleheader and brought the Royals within a game of first place in the AL Central. Earlier in the day, the Royals won Game 1 with a 4-3 score, thanks to Bobby Witt Jr.'s go-ahead homer in the eighth inning.
Kansas City, which trailed by nine games in early July, has surged back into contention, boasting an impressive 22-13 record since the All-Star break, the best in the AL during that stretch. They now have a chance to tie for the division lead with a win on Tuesday.
In the second game, the 34-year-old Perez, who served as DH after catching in the hot conditions of the opener, hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and followed up with a grand slam in the sixth. Perez’s multi-homer game ties him with Royals legend George Brett for the most in franchise history with 17.
Despite dropping both games of the doubleheader, Cleveland remains determined, with manager Stephen Vogt expressing confidence in his team's resilience. The Guardians, who have led the AL Central since mid-April, have struggled in doubleheaders this season, falling to 0-8 in such situations.
José Ramírez provided a bright spot for Cleveland, recording three doubles in the second game, bringing him closer to club records for extra-base hits.
The Royals’ pitching shined in both games. John Schreiber secured the win in Game 1 after solid bullpen work, while Lucas Erceg earned his fifth save since being acquired by Kansas City in a July trade. Witt, who has been exceptional since the break, hit his 27th home run of the season to lead the Royals to victory in the opener.
Looking ahead, Kansas City’s starting rotation looks strong with Michael Lorenzen, coming off a scoreless outing, set to pitch against Cleveland’s Gavin Williams on Tuesday.
