🏐 Ohio Schools Vary in Pay to Play Fees for Student Activities
Across Ohio, Pay to Play policies for student activities differ widely, from districts that charge hundreds of dollars per sport to those where participation is free. For schools like Mentor High, the cost to participate in sports is $200 for the first sport and $50 for each additional sport, a policy that has been in place for two decades.
Other districts, like Twinsburg, calculate fees differently. In Twinsburg, students pay 30% of the total cost of running activities, including athletics and extracurriculars like National Honor Society and Student Council. This percentage increased from 25% a few years ago, with a cap of $500 per family.
In contrast, districts like Cleveland Heights and Cleveland prioritize free participation to ensure students, particularly those from lower-income families, aren’t left out. Cleveland Heights Athletic Director Joe D’Amato emphasizes the importance of keeping sports accessible to as many students as possible, noting that costs like transportation, equipment, and referee fees are absorbed by the district.
While some schools benefit from Booster Club support, they still face significant expenses, from equipment to venue rentals for sports like tennis and swimming. Despite the financial challenges, districts like Mentor feel that their fees provide good value, and the Pay to Play system is likely here to stay.

Digging Dog Training Center, a fixture in the area for over two decades, offers more than just dog training; it provides a journey into understanding and deepening the bond between people and their pets.
At the helm of this center is Elizabeth Richards, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KSA) with over twenty years of experience in nurturing and shaping the behavior of dogs of all ages and breeds. Her philosophy is simple yet profound: training should be a positive, enriching experience for both the dog and the owner.
What sets Digging Dog Training Center apart is its emphasis on positive reinforcement techniques. It's a testament to the center's commitment to not only pets but also to those who have served our country, recognizing the healing and comforting power of a well-trained canine companion.

🦴 Healthy Homemade Pet Food: Nutritious Recipes for Dogs and Cats
Nutrition and Diet: Healthy Homemade Pet Food Recipes
As more pet owners become concerned about the quality of commercial pet foods, the trend toward preparing homemade meals for pets is on the rise. With the right balance of nutrients, homemade pet food can be a healthier alternative that offers your furry friends a variety of flavors and the benefits of fresh ingredients.
Why Consider Homemade Pet Food?
Many store-bought pet foods contain fillers, preservatives, and artificial additives that can be harmful over time. By preparing meals at home, you control what goes into your pet’s bowl, ensuring they get only the best. Homemade recipes allow for customization based on your pet's specific dietary needs, whether they require more protein, fewer carbohydrates, or certain vitamins and minerals.
Key Nutrients for a Balanced Diet
It’s essential to create a balanced meal plan for your pet that includes:
Protein: Essential for muscle growth and energy, good sources include chicken, turkey, beef, or fish.
Carbohydrates: Provide energy and support digestion. Brown rice, oats, and sweet potatoes are excellent choices.
Fats: Necessary for a healthy coat and skin, found in sources like fish oil or flaxseed.
Vitamins and Minerals: Crucial for overall health, ensure these come from vegetables like carrots, spinach, and pumpkin.
Basic Recipe for Dogs: Chicken and Rice
This simple yet nutritious recipe is suitable for most dogs:
Ingredients: 1 cup of cooked chicken, 1/2 cup of cooked brown rice, 1/4 cup of steamed vegetables (like carrots and spinach).
Instructions: Mix all ingredients together, ensuring the food is fully cooled before serving.
Basic Recipe for Cats: Tuna and Pumpkin
Cats, being obligate carnivores, need a diet rich in protein:
Ingredients: 1/2 cup of canned tuna in water, 1/4 cup of cooked pumpkin, a pinch of cat-safe supplements.
Instructions: Combine the tuna and pumpkin, and add the supplements as per your vet’s advice.
Important Considerations
Always consult your veterinarian before switching your pet’s diet to ensure it meets their nutritional requirements. Each pet is unique, and dietary needs can vary based on age, breed, and health conditions. Additionally, avoid using ingredients like onions, garlic, and certain spices that can be toxic to pets.
By taking the time to prepare healthy, homemade meals, you can help your pets live longer, healthier lives with the benefit of fresh, wholesome food.
⚾ Guardians Storm Back in 7th Inning to Reclaim First in AL Central
Rookie Jhonkensy Noel delivered a pivotal RBI single in the seventh inning, sending Josh Naylor home with the go-ahead run as the Cleveland Guardians surged to a 7-5 comeback victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. This win allowed Cleveland to reclaim sole possession of first place in the AL Central.
Entering the seventh down 5-2, Cleveland launched a rally, scoring four times to take the lead. Bo Naylor's home run off Kansas City starter Michael Wacha kickstarted the comeback, followed by RBI singles from Josh Naylor, Will Brennan, and Noel against reliever Lucas Erceg. Andrés Giménez added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, ensuring Cleveland's escape from a four-game sweep. This marked the Guardians' MLB-leading 37th comeback win of the season.
The Royals saw their seven-game road winning streak end, despite standout performances from Vinnie Pasquantino, who notched a career-high four hits, and Bobby Witt Jr., who hit one of three solo homers for Kansas City. The Royals remain in contention, having clinched the season tiebreaker over Cleveland.
Eli Morgan secured the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, while Emmanuel Clase recorded his AL-leading 39th save and tied a franchise record with his 149th career save. Kansas City starter Michael Wacha, who was seeking his 100th career win, allowed five runs over six innings. The Royals continue their battle for postseason positioning as they host Cleveland next week for a critical three-game series.
