⚾ Guardians Power Past Pirates 10-8 with Noel, Giménez Homers; Clase Sets Saves Record

The Cleveland Guardians secured a 10-8 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night, powered by back-to-back home runs from rookie Jhonkensy Noel and Andrés Giménez in the fifth inning. Noel's towering 450-foot, two-run shot followed by Giménez's solo homer turned the tide after the Pirates had surged ahead with a six-run fifth inning.

Emmanuel Clase made history by setting the Guardians' career saves record with his 150th save, and his 40th of the season. Despite allowing a leadoff home run to Andrew McCutchen in the ninth, Clase closed out the game, surpassing Cody Allen on the club's all-time saves list. Clase's dominant season continues as he holds an ERA under 1.00 and has converted 27 consecutive save opportunities since May 20, making him a strong Cy Young contender.

Josh Naylor also played a pivotal role, driving in four runs for the Guardians. However, his night ended in the eighth inning when he appeared to injure his left ankle after an RBI single, requiring assistance to leave the field. The Guardians, who now hold a 1 1/2-game lead in the AL Central over Kansas City, will face the Royals in a three-game series starting Monday.

For the Pirates, Oneil Cruz and Rowdy Tellez provided offensive firepower, with Cruz driving in three runs and Tellez hitting a two-run homer during their explosive fifth inning. However, the Pirates' bullpen faltered again, continuing a troubling trend after their recent 14-10 loss to the Chicago Cubs, where they allowed 11 runs in the final three innings. In response to the bullpen struggles, Pirates manager Derek Shelton has decided to remove David Bednar from the closer role and implement a closer-by-committee strategy moving forward.

In other news, Guardians' right-hander Alex Cobb is expected to return from the injured list to start Sunday’s series finale, while Pirates' right-hander Luis Ortiz, who delivered six scoreless innings in his last outing, will take the mound against Guardians' left-hander Matt Boyd in the next game.

🏈 Mentor Holds Off St. Ignatius Late to Secure 20-14 Win

Mentor football coach Matt Gray emphasized to his team that they are still a work in progress. However, their ability to close out a tough game against St. Ignatius, a team that had previously bested them, marked a significant step forward early in the season.

Running back Jackson Farley was the game’s standout, rushing for a career-high 211 yards on 20 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Mentor's offense successfully ran out the final 3 minutes and 16 seconds, securing a 20-14 victory at John Carroll University’s Don Shula Stadium. The win broke a four-game losing streak to St. Ignatius, including two close defeats last season.

St. Ignatius made a late push, scoring with just over three minutes left to cut the lead to 20-14. Despite the pressure, Mentor's defense held firm, and the offense relied on Farley and quarterback Scotty Fox to run out the clock. When Fox converted a crucial first down with 1:30 remaining, the Cardinals were able to kneel out the game and celebrate on the sidelines.

Farley’s 78-yard touchdown run in the first quarter immediately responded to St. Ignatius' early score. He later added two more touchdowns, including one after a nine-play drive in the third quarter. St. Ignatius attempted a comeback, but Mentor's defense came up with a key stop late in the game to preserve the win and move their record to 2-0.

Next week, Mentor will host McDowell Erie, PA (1-1) at home.

🏈 Trinetti and Peterlin Shine in Cougars' 33-7 Triumph

Lake Catholic Football

The Lake Catholic Cougars continued their strong start to the season with a decisive 33-7 victory over the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy Royals. This win brings the Cougars to a 2-0 record, with both victories coming on the road.

The Cougars took an early lead in the first quarter when Jimmy Gibbons powered into the end zone with a 3-yard touchdown run, putting them ahead 6-0. In the second quarter, the momentum continued as Frankie Trinetti launched a 58-yard touchdown pass to Ace Peterlin, extending the lead to 12-0. Trinetti and Peterlin connected once more later in the half, this time on a 71-yard touchdown strike, pushing the score to 26-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. From there, the Cougars maintained control, comfortably securing a 33-7 win over the Royals.

Next week, the Cougars will host Erie on Saturday night.
